As an older person I have a hard time with blanket slogans. But the thing we call "ICE:" United States Immigration & Customs Enforcement not doing a good job: it kills people and kidnaps. Started in 2003. End it NOW. Tell your senators and reps and everyone to spread the word.

I was out in the water while they were putting up and decorating the Christmas tree in funky Ocean Beach ( ) and as usual it leans a bit; in the bg, waves crash into the (retired, long story) pier. Thanks Ocean Beach Community Foundation for arboreal joy!

Wide shot of the Christmas tree with a cherry picker visible with two people decorating the tree in it. A few onlookers visible, and the works is surrounded by yellow tape. In the background is the OB pier and breaking waves. And a thin palm tree trunk is in front of the Christmas tree mid-image.

    I will mourn those who I feel grief over.

    You can't demand I mourn.

    You may request basic respect for the dead.

    You can't demand I respect a legacy I find invidious.

    You can't demand I ignore the words of the dead.

    If you can demand my feelings and thoughts be "correct," you are authoritarian.

    My wife and I have gotten into the habit of asking each other at dinner what was the best thing that happened to each other that day. She now likes this tradition so much she's expanded it into three things, which I contend makes the whole thing more of a mental exercise, but I usually manage. I have found though that it makes me take closer note of the good things that happen during the day, so I'm not left with "uh...." when it's my turn. It also helps punctuate the positive at a time when there's a whole lot of the opposite.

    artlung ,
    @artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

    @briankrebs When I was still a stepfather the tradition was "highs and lows" - share the best thing(s) and the worst thing(s) that day. A great way to reflect and learn.

    @molly0xfff In a talk by Marc Sageman many many years ago about psychology of 9/11 attackers he mentioned disproportionate number of engineers among them. Said mindset of ENG was to ignore centuries of scholarship on Koran in favor of rereading from first principles. Compared them to early 20th C anarchists (think WWI) also including many engineers. Talk at Navy War College I think. I may be slightly mischaracterizing but that's my hazy recollection.

    Holy shit. Thanks @pluralistic now I don't want to fly anymore 😱

    Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" is manufactured ... in a non-union shop in Charleston, South Carolina. At that shop, there is a cage full of defective parts that have been pulled from production because they are not airworthy.

    Hundreds of parts from that Material Review Segregation Area (MRSA) were secretly pulled from that cage and installed on aircraft that are currently flying the world's skies.

    If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

    No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

    @molly0xfff I’ve been following RSS decades . A Life Well Wasted updated after a 9 year hiatus. Dooce died and won’t be updating. I miss creators who died or quit or who went 410 Gone. But we are living the good old days today. We live in an Eternal September of new stuff on the web. As long as people make www that lasts and is not stuck in Orkut or G+ or MySpace or Vine or Ello these are the good old days. I like that people who forgot can remember that the web we own is the best web.
