This story is depressing but there is also a reason for hope in it. Even deeply indoctrinated children* are aware, can sense, that there are bigger things out there. That it's possibly to really know things, not just be told what to think, but to really know.

*in some ways every child is indoctrinated in one way or another.

Everyone says that comparing yourself to other people is wrong. And I agree. You shouldn't compare yourself to other people - even though in certain situations it can be inspiring. Most of the time, however, it has quite the opposite effect.

Especially social media is full of people pretending like they have a great life. In some cases that's probably true, but mostly it comes across to me as some sort of need to prove to other people that they too have a great life because they travel the world, have a partner, etc.

Personally, these things affect me very badly. I try not to compare myself to other people, but when I see others enjoying life and I don't, it makes me feel worse. When I see pictures of couples in love on the internet or see them in the real world, it also makes my mood worse. Both social media and the real world are toxic places for me, which only makes my depression worse.

Interesting how perceptions can vary from person to person. I met with a new GI physician yesterday. I thought it went well, and I felt I was very prepared with detailed pre-visit discussion points and documents from related previous doctors/procedures.

However, in reading the physician notes, I presented as "tremendously anxious", to the extent that she wants me to work with a behavioral therapist.

I still contend that, even though I present anxious to others, I don't feel it myself at all. I'm just being "me", and my AuDHD or possible bipolar I might look like anxiety to others.

Folks who experience PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance):

What does PDA feel like to you?

And a follow-up question: What kind of parents did you have? How did they communicate responsibilities and chores to you?

Quite often, when someone suggests something to me - like "we should do X" - even if X is something I might normally enjoy - I feel tense, and there's this "ugggggh" knee-jerk reaction in my head. An instant resistance to doing the thing.

I was mulling it over this morning, and it occurred to me that my parents were very authoritarian. "When I say jump, you say how high" was a common refrain in my childhood household.

I often didn't have a choice and was guilted and forced into doing things I didn't want to do. Not in abusive ways, but... for example, I often didn't want to go to my grandma's house for holidays, which I now realize was because it was incredibly overstimulating. She lived in a small house, and they would cram 30+ people in there. The noises, the smells, having to interact with aunts and uncles... I just didn't want to go. But I didn't have a choice.

So I learned early on that when something is "asked" of me, I don't have a choice.

I wonder if PDA - for me, or for others, or in general - comes from childhood experiences like that, where we are conditioned to deeply believe we don't have a choice. So when things are suggested or requested of us, it triggers that sense of dread that we have to do something and don't have a choice about it.

The stereotypical speech pattern for verbal autistic people is monotone, but there's actually another subgroup: those of us with "sing-songy" speech. I'm in this group.
