Apparently my Fedi promo video is giving error messages on YouTube (shocker).

So I just logged on YouTube Studio for the first time in months to see what's going on... and found some interesting comments.

I'm not caffeinated enough to deliver zingers but I hope my response was adequate.

On the upside, I also saw a few comments of people who set up new accounts here, so yay.

As for the unplayable problem: no clue. But this is why I LOVE and on my website I'm using the PeerTube embed

If Alice makes a followers-only post, and Bob replies to it, to whom should Bob's reply be visible?

Yuvalne ,
@Yuvalne@433.world avatar

@evan @luana i think the issue can be summarised as "fedi lets you change/expand the audience, when it should only let you narrow it". however, changing what followes-only does would eliminate the second part, which is important for safety.
ideally the privacy controls for replies should be entirely different to post controls, so instead of public, quiet, followers and DM, it should be "original audience, original but quiet, mutuals, DM", at least from the maximalist safety viewpoint.

Yuvalne ,
@Yuvalne@433.world avatar

@luana @evan but you can change the privacy of replies. it doesn't have to follow OP's decision, and it's important to have the option to do so. which is why i'm saying the whole framework of reply privacy needs to be reworked.

Yuvalne ,
@Yuvalne@433.world avatar

@evan @luana
yeah, and i want to emphasise that in my original comment the main point that audience shouldn't be allowed to be expanded, but should definitely be allowed to get narrowed. hence why i'm saying privacy controls for replies should be entirely different, with the most broad option allowed being "original audience".

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/

Yuvalne ,
@Yuvalne@433.world avatar

@ericfreyss @Mer__edith
presumably that's on AWS to fix. the AWS deployment of Signal uses DynamoDB, which in theory is multi-region. however that service has a chokepoint in US-East-1 that is part of the AWS design and not something anyone other than them can fix - you can't choose to have the DNS for it be deployed somewhere else when you deploy to DynamoDB. it's AWS's task to make DynamoDB actually as multi-region as they advertise it being.

    "What happens when Signal turns bad?"
    it's open source and run by a foundation. it's not like it can be bought by anyone. not to mention that the client (which is audited regularly) already works on the assumption that the server is malicious. a bad actor couldn't even try to map out the network without the whole service going down.

    additionally, since literally everything is E2EE, including metadata, there's no risk from the hosting provider. just like jurisdiction doesn't matter so long as you do E2EE correctly
    (https://soatok.blog/2025/07/09/jurisdiction-is-nearly-irrelevant-to-the-security-of-encrypted-messaging-apps/), the only thing the host could do to you is jack up the price so you can't use them anymore.

    saying that the server can talk to the spam filter which is not public for very obvious reasons when the whole point is that the client assumes the server is malicious anyway which you can verify as many have already done including proving mathematically how libsignal works is like saying coreboot is essentially proprietary software because it allows for blobs under certain circumstances.

    and above all, you still owe me the answer to one question:
    is the conspiratorial fear from Signal maybe one day turning bad which would require a ton of effort from their side and will be noticable from miles ahead worth signing yourself to the subpar security of XMPP or Matrix?

    i don't think so. i choose security over this conspiratorial scenario. you're welcome to choose otherwise.

    Yuvalne ,
    @Yuvalne@433.world avatar

    @FediThing @_elena @soatok

    Signal can't be sold. that's one big difference you're ignoring.

    "refuses to federate" actually the biggest opponent of federation was Moxie, who isn't even part of Signal anymore.
    here's the technical claim he made against it, if you're willing to watch.
    https://archive.org/details/36c3-the-ecosystem-is-moving

    "it's a tradeoff" right now the tradeoff is security. by pitching XMPP or Matrix you're making people less secure (and i'm not even talking about the PQ stuff).
    is it worth it?
