I really, really would like to love and support my home state but the GOP is making it really difficult. Memphis, my home town, gave birth to blues, soul and rock'n'roll, was pivotal in the civil rights movement, gorgeous view to the Mississippi River and a world renowned BBQ scene. Nashville has a thriving nightlife and a music scene of its own owing to its numerous music halls. Chattanooga and Knoxville are their own little nuggets of Tennessee charm. There's also the natural beauty: Great Smoky Mountains and the associated national park, numerous smaller state parks, swimmable lakes (e.g. Percy Priest Lake), and so forth. This isn't even including the extensive Native American history.

Instead of using it's natural beauty and rich, though troubled, history to make Tennessee a center of the southern U.S., Bill Lee and his Republican-led (i.e. Trumpist stronghold) state house makes it a living hell for everyone. xAI was allowed to install poisonous gas turbines right next to poor, black neighborhoods. ICE and the National Guard were given carte blanche to roam our streets. The south is, truly, a backwards backwater.

This is actually good advice... in isolation. Encouraging people to spend their money more wisely can bring awareness to an issue but it ultimately does little to implement change. Sure, you and I (and the Fediverse as a whole) might be hyper-vigilant about these kind of things but the average consumer isn't. Continuing with your Nintendo example, Nintendo has decades of brand recognition and a zealous fanbase to satisfy the demand. An eager gaming press will gladly take free hardware from Nintendo for positive coverage.

Real change won't happen until the tap is turned off, so to speak. These companies are taking advantages of gaps in the law that permit them to get away with this. Antitrust law in the US dates back to a time when steam-powered trains were still common and the last breakup involved a telephone company. When AT&T was broken up, the home computer (desktop in modern parlance) was just starting to take off.

So, yes, we should spend our money elsewhere when we see this kinds of corporate abuses but until you starve the beast, keep expecting these kinds of behaviors.

I know this is just a meme but one thing I love about classic sci-fi (i.e. pre-1990) is the concept art. Michael Whelan and Frank Frazzeta being prominent examples of this. Their artwork are on another fucking level. There's just so ethereal about those hand-drawn/pre-digital artwork of non-existent worlds.

Here's some tips:

  1. Sticking to this community's name, ditch the automobile all together and adopt a hybrid approach of cycling and public transit. Buy and/or build a good bike or e-bike and learn the local bus route and/or routes of any other public transit.

  2. For those of us still stick in Der Orangenführer's fascist regime, stick to cars made before 2012. Some cars were going to high tech before this but it's bond to be outdated but check if it's still used.

  1. The first four words of my comment were "I'm no Maoist" quite clearly signaling that I don't affiliate myself with Maoism.

  2. The rest of my comment was in reference to Mao's Land Reform Movement (i.e. those oh-so famous landlord killing memes). You're thinking about Mao's Cultural Revolution and The Great Leap Foward which were separate incidents that did, indeed, kill and starve many innocent people. Mao was tyrant and despot but no one, absolutely no one, missed the landlords. Well, maybe, expect the ones that fled to Daddy Chiang.

This goes beyond not liking a Swedish finance app. This is about the dystopian absurdity of financing your rent payment. It sounds like a plot point from a William Gibson novel. You're borrowing money, that you'll have to pay back with interest, to have a roof over your head; a roof that is not even yours. Klarna would very happy to lend you that money so they can profit from debt and the landlord(s) will be happy because they're still making money without providing value. You don't have be Marxist to see why this is a problem.

Kinda of. About 6 months ago, my speakers stopped outputting sound from their proper port on the I/O. Speakers themselves still worked as connecting them to the headphone port produced sound. When I put my PC back together about two weeks ago the sound problem persisted but this time switching sound profiles in the sound setting then switching back to the default, strangely, fixed the problem. It came at the caveat that I have to do it every time at reboot.

SpiceDealer ,
@SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Same. Had to read that headline twice just to be sure.

Hey, guys. Is it a good idea to dunk PC parts in isopropyl alcohol?

I’ll be straight with it. I’m a smoker, I smoke inside, I have a PC that is also inside. I want to clean my PC thoroughly to buy it a few more years. I know about the q tip method, and the compressed air, and general methods of cleaning out gunk and junk from PC parts. But this boy is way too gunked up for a regular ...

SpiceDealer ,
@SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I would highly advise against this! That would be a health and fire hazard waiting to happen. Isopropyl is good for cleaning your electronics but I wouldn't bathe them in it.

If you still want to try submerging your PC in some kind of liquid, you can try mineral oil. This was a trend in PC building back in the early-mid 2010s but seems to have lost momentum around 2017/2018. I've never done this myself so research thoroughly. Other than that, stick to water-cooling.

Also, at the risk of sounding like an asshole, I would advise quitting smoking.

SpiceDealer ,
@SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The idea wasn't about cleaning your PC but rather cooling it. The idea was that since mineral oil hydrophilic (is that the right word?), it could do a better job than air or water cooling. However, as other have pointed out, it was a massive hassle with marginal benefits.

I was speaking to a Nicaraguan co-worker a few days ago about the current situation in Nicaragua and the general geopolitical situation in Latin America as whole. She seems to be in her 50s so I ask about her memories regarding the Contras and Sandinistas. I shit you not, she actually spoke positively about the Contras; she said if the Contras were around today, Nicaragua wouldn't be in the situation that it is today. She goes on to say that her dad was falsely accused of being a member of the Contras.

While I understand that the situation with her dad may have traumatized her, it is mind-boggling that she praised the U.S.-funded death squads.
