“It’s cheaper for me to live in the middle of Vancouver than it is for me to live in Merthyr Tydfil [Wales]."

JFC how bad is the UK housing market for Vancouver to be a financially attractive choice!?

One of the rare "10/10, no notes" series from start to finish. Amazing finale too. Fantastic rewatch value.

I heard amazing things about Outer Wilds, was under the impression it was an adventure game but "make sure to go in blind!" was the universal advice so I didn't look up more, downloaded it, started to play, and really struggled with the controls. I wasn't raised with video games as a kid and I don't play platformers and such so my coordination is shit. When I went to the net to find a solution (because a lot of games have at least mods you can download to make things easier) but all I got was "get gud." I asked a friend who was like "oh yeah, I watched a stream of someone playing and it seems like a technically difficult game." So that's a pretty important warning to include with any Outer Wilds recommendation.

fireweed ,

The first season was pretty good, a bit too goofy at times (clearly aimed at a somewhat younger audience), but it had potential. The second season definitely dropped the ball.

fireweed ,

I got a recommendation for the Canadian show North of North here on Lemmy, and while not the best show ever, it was quite enjoyable, and IMO a great example of the importance of DEI (sounds like a lot of support went into making the show happen at all, but precisely because it wasn't the typical concept/setting to get greenlit it felt really fresh).

Can anyone recommend any good science communicators for a 12 year old girl?

When I was growing up, we had discovery channel. That sparked my intrinsic curiousity. My daughter has that intrinsic motivation as well, but only for k-pop now. She likes youtube videos and she likes when I tell her about science stuff. Maybe I can combine that by recommending her some good youtube channels.

fireweed ,

Seconding this. PBS has a TON of YouTube channels for all kinds of interest areas. Not all are going to be geared to a middle school audience, but much like the TV stations themselves, at least you don't have to worry as much* about the potential content as a parent (in terms of quality or appropriateness) vs random YouTube channels.

*I would say all their stuff is high school appropriate, but some of the more local/news-related stuff could be a bad fit for younger audiences depending on the kid, only because we don't live in a world that's child-friendly. Also channels like PBS Terra do a lot of videos about how fucked we are re: climate change (not in so many words of course) and although they do try to put an optimistic spin on it, sensitive kids might get freaked out by how bad things are (which would be an accurate response of course, so it depends on how much you've been trying to shelter your kid from this kind of thing I guess).

I saw a clip of the performance... It was a really bad lip sync. As in he kept pulling the mic away from his head well before the lyrics were over. I'd heard the controversy and was like, I'm sure it wasn't that obvious he was lip syncing, and was floored when I saw the actual performance.

Too bad the spell components are a bitch to get ahold of

Especially because they're trying to emulate the samurai dialect. It's inaccurate, but deserves points for trying!

fireweed ,

"Kitten cuddling" is a euphemism. They are chaos gremlins with needles permanently affixed to their feet.

Still cute tho.

fireweed ,

Yeah but O'Brien is Irish-Irish, not Chicago-Irish. He wouldn't be caught dead with the stuff.

fireweed ,

I've never used Blender before, but sixty hours is a lot of work! Which part of the process was the most laborious/fiddly? (I saw the 40hr mark shot in another comment, which kind of gives me an idea)

the free and open source office suite trusted by millions of users around the world.

Do I use Libre office? Yes. Do I trust it? Absolutely not (in the sense that I don't think they're stealing my data, but wow is the user experience a buggy mess)

No, this is Patrickortland

Bad headline = downvote

Literally the first I'm hearing of Tuta.

Are they legit?

Why is this the Mandela effect version?

fireweed ,

I haven't seen this mentioned yet so:

Do not allow yourself to be persuaded, pressured, or bullied into having kids (including by yourself) until you feel 100% ready and that it's 100% what you want. The days of "nobody feels ready for kids; just go for it and it'll all work out" are way over. (This was always survivor bias bullshit advice, but with recent trends re: cost of living, housing availability, job market, etc., this attitude is straight-up reckless.)

When you're young, even if you think you know what you're doing, you'll almost certainly make mistakes; having children makes moving through and moving on from those mistakes a hell of a lot harder. A sad number of folks I know in their 30s are stuck in places they no longer want to live having to regularly interact with people who ruined their lives because of their kids. Even when things go well, kids are a huge drain on your energy, finances, and ability to take advantage of new opportunities.

It might be scary feeling like there are too many options available to you right now, but being forced into a certain life path because you have kids is not a fun way to resolve that.

It has a generally negative connotation, like someone who is filmed throwing a tantrum in public, or who posts a bunch of absolutely furious tweets in response to getting called out. Usually it's considered an embarrassing and excessive reaction (possibly career-ending, or reputation besmirching). But sometimes you'll see someone post a video/screenshot of a crash out with the title: "that was the most justified crash out ever," implying that yes, their reaction was extreme, but for a good reason.

I propose a border swap: USA gets Alberta, Canada gets Washington State

(Please I beg you get me out of here)

So this is what we're doing on Lemmy today: posting completely random Star Trek clips

That's the portion they have shonen protagonists eat to demonstrate their humorously preposterous appetites

Ngl, Chii-tan looks like they've got an unlit Molotov cocktail hiding under their hat, and is just looking for a MFer to throw down on

Surprised no one has commented on the juxtaposition with the Alberta license plate yet

fireweed ,

I'm not Canadian, but my understanding is Alberta is basically the Texas of Canada. Maybe even worse, more like the Wyoming or Idaho of Canada.

fireweed ,

Stealth marketing on Lemmy? Congratulations everyone, we've made it!

fireweed ,

I assume you've tried shredded/gravy wet foods? In my experience they're much more popular than the patés. My understanding is your vet is totally correct: it's really important for cats to get moisture from their food, so it's worth it to keep trying to find something your cat will eat!

Unless I missed something, the linked article does not attribute the tapeworm's death to the mercury poisoning.

The venn diagram of Americans who think they need guns to stop a tyrannical government and Americans who support Trump is a circle.

(All kidding aside, while this is still painfully close to true, there are signs it's changing, such as the recent resurgence of the Black Panthers. However by and large the people who are horrified over the pain and suffering inflicted by the Trump administration are also anti-gun on account of all the pain and suffering they cause. The peaceful, anti-violence, anti-war types are not exactly well equipped--literally or figuratively--to stage an uprising against the government, certainly not one with a military budget the size of Mt Everest)

fireweed ,

This article is 2-3 days old. No update here.

To be clear, OP knows there's no "u" in the word in American English and the title is intended as a joke, right?

fireweed ,

I've heard that the "u" drop (along with the "l" drop) was a result of telegrams (kinda like you -> u in early texting/Twitter days to save on characters). Regardless it happened before any of our lifetimes so it's pretty much standardized at this point. I can definitely see where it would be frustrating in the coding world, but it's not like that can be reasonably regionalized so it's a situation we're just stuck with.

fireweed ,

Ah yes, this is why the phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" does not exist.

Godammit you made me think I missed a huge news story

fireweed ,

FYI (from Wikipedia):

The Epoch Times is a far-right international multi-language newspaper and media company affiliated with the Falun Gong new religious movement. [...] The Epoch Times opposes the Chinese Communist Party, promotes far-right politicians and movements in Europe, and has supported President Donald Trump in the U.S. A 2019 report by NBC News showed it to be the second-largest funder of pro-Trump Facebook advertising after the Trump campaign itself. [...] The Epoch Media Group's news sites and YouTube channels have promoted conspiracy theories such as QAnon, the Great Replacement, anti-vaccine misinformation and false claims of fraud in the 2020 United States presidential election. In June 2024, the group's chief financial officer, Bill Guan, was indicted for money laundering.

In other words, not a news source to be citing or directing traffic to.

Did you see the thread on electric blankets? Absolute game changer, especially when room temps are kept low, and much cheaper to purchase and maintain than most other heating solutions. You don't need to keep it on your bed either; wrap yourself in an electric blanket with a thick blanket or two (or even a comforter) on top to insulate it when you're on the couch or at a desk. It's the closet thing the Western world has to a kotatsu in terms of comfort. Bonus tip: wear heavy clothes and crank up the dial and marinate in the heat until you're uncomfortable, and you'll feel ready to venture into the rest of the freezing house, at least for a little while.
