I found the "quick boost" setting in Mastodon's preferences, and like it much better with this turned on.

[edit: apparently this setting came in with Mastodon 4.5.0 in November. Seeing how quickly people have boosted this, a lot of us didn't notice but wanted it.]

I knew the power was about to go out when I heard wind gusts make a brief rumble. A moment later it did. Around 6pm on 🦃 is probably among the worst times for power to go out, with many households serving holiday dinner. But power uptime is less than 99% over the year in this neighborhood, with trees near power lines. Nearly half the houses already had backup generators of some kind. I suspect a bunch more will get them now because of the timing of this outage.

KO6YQ OP ,
@KO6YQ@pnw.zone avatar

This storm caused more than just a power outage. A tree is down across the only road out. If I needed to go anywhere, the options are walking or by bicycle. The bright light is Portland Police. (Probably not a Grimm, as seen on TV & streaming.)

The road has one lane cleared for residents to get in and out. The tree is still resting on the bed of a parked pickup where it fell. The power has been out on this block for 4 hours, but never went out across the next street over. Undoubtedly some neighbors must have some unhappy Thanksgiving stories.

So far the reported military deployment to Portland seems to be all bluster. All of the increase in military aircraft I saw at PDX are explained by invited performers in the Oregon Int'l Airshow this weekend in McMinnville. An article by KGW (NBC Portland) credits a phone call from Oregon Governor Tina Kotek with talking POTUS down from his unrealistic deployment based on bogus reports from his social media echo chamber. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/trump-seems-to-back-off-portland-military-plan/283-e9c6bdfb-92d6-4881-bb74-09bb325a5270

Next up in the anything-but-Epstein distraction plan: Send troops into Portland.

"President Donald Trump said Saturday that he will send troops to Portland, Oregon, and to immigration detention facilities around the country, authorizing “Full Force, if necessary” and escalating a campaign to use the U.S. military against Americans that has little modern precedent."

Trump said in a social media post that he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to provide troops to what he dubbed “War ravaged Portland.”

"Portland has been a target of right-wing politicians for the way it has handled racial-justice protests as well as its homeless population, tolerating encampments in the central part of the city. But Trump will again encounter the dynamic he did when he deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles — a military deployment in a state run by a Democratic governor who objects to the decision and will have grounds to fight it in court."

@briankrebs I saw a C-17 military cargo plane land at PDX on Friday before the announcements of federal troops coming to Portland. PDX is a joint-use civilian-military airport with an Oregon Air National Guard base. C-17s are not based here. It looked far enough away that it was probably landing 28R, opposite side of the airport from the ANG base. I didn't think much of it because visiting military aircraft sometimes drop in for fuel on the way somewhere else. But now the timing adds questions.

    "Governor Tina Kotek delays ODOT layoffs and announces August special session" by Oregon Public Broadcasting OPB (PBS Portland) - Layoffs postponed at ODOT (Oregon Dept of Transportation) as special legislative session is set to begin Aug 29 to work on a state transportation funding bill. Time will be tight on the transportation bill in the special session of the Oregon legislature. The 45 day delay in layoffs at ODOT pushes them back to mid-September. But the special session starts Aug 29. That leaves 2 weeks to finish a bill they couldn't agree on during the regular session. That bill will be the focus of the special session. But it's still a short time for such a consequential bill to pass the state House and Senate. Best of luck to them.
