Unrelated but I like that GunZ The Duel is not only old enough to drink in the US, but that the private servers have outlived both the original game, it disappointing sequel, and countless AAA productions over the years. Whole genres have come and gone, with billions spent chasing whatever the new hotness is, while some privately-run upcycled office workstations have faithfully served thousands of hardcore gamers for decades.

Some games just don't die.

I always felt the term "humanist" was woefully inadequate and discounts other sentient life, be it organic or otherwise, on earth or otherwise.

Even I hate "AI" (or more specifically: the bullshitting around the current and near-future tech currently being called that)

It's a diagnosis and there are clinical criteria. The term is used inaccurately more often then not. While colloquial and domain definitions often differ, I think I agree with the other commenter: the language people use should be more direct and visceral.

US Bombs Somalia for 30th Time This Year ( news.antiwar.com )

Thirty airstrikes by mid-February mark an unprecedented rate of US attacks in Somalia. President Trump launched a total of 124 airstrikes in Somalia in 2025, according to AFRICOM numbers, breaking the previous annual record for airstrikes in the country, which he set at 63 in 2019. If the current pace keeps up, Trump will ...

Don't use a subdomain for your server name; you can delegate a subdomain via well-known endpoint for the real server if needed in the future but this lets users keep a clean domain.com for their contact.

Synapse / Element are the go-to, maybe unfortunately; most other things lack features or use outdated deps. I run a Cinny webapp locked to my HS so people can easily try it out, which is a nice-to-have; but most end up installing Element when they adopt Matrix. (Personally I run fluffychat for mobile and Tuwunel server (forked tuwunel<-conduwuit<-conduit) but they can be a pita. Just stick to the defacto standard stuff)

Docker or Nix trivializes setup configuration. Similarly, Caddy is a cheat code for managing SSL, reverse proxy, and endpoint hosting.

If you use synapse, there's a handy admin webui thing people use which is highly encouraged by the sounds of it.

The biggest friction point is usually setting up TURN/STUN for VoIP etc. Massive pita but a using a VPS may help you a lot there if that's something you need (being behind NAT makes it very difficult and risky).

Make sure you use registration tokens so your server is private (this is usually the default I think)

Do you have any more specific questions or concerns?

ImgurRefugee114 ,

Thanks. Glad I could help. Tuwunel is actually a fork of conduwuit, just like continuwuity is; conduwuit itself being a fork of conduit. I originally started with continuwuity but went to tuwunel early on after some problem I forget (probably a bad update or something). Yeah, they can have some problems sadly. But they tend to be lighter on runtime resources. Personally, if I could start over, I'd just roll with synapse.

ImgurRefugee114 ,

Nope, because 1) I'm running tuwunel so not much synapse experience and 2) I just use NixOS so my whole operating system sort of is a deployment/updating script...

I did mention an admin gui but idk the name. Should be easy to find. Very popular.

AI has a lot of pitfalls. It helps knowing how they work: tokens, context, training, harnesses and tools,... Because then nonsense like this makes a lot more sense; same for "count the R's in strawberry" type things. (For the record, I later told it to use JavaScript to manipulate strings to accomplish this task and it did a much better job. Still needed touchups of course)

They work best when you know how to accomplish whatever it is you're asking it to do, and can point it in a direction that leverages its strengths, and avoid weeknesses (often tied to perception and dexterity). Something like ASCII art is nearly a worst-case scenario, aside from maybe asking a general purpose LLM to do math.

ImgurRefugee114 ,

Somewhat. The issue isn't memory leaks themselves so much as learning project architecture, patterns, and generally how to do things without shooting yourself in the foot.

Rust has plenty of gotchas and unintuitive elements, so they're not too different in that sense. Though Rust is more likely to point out when you've done something wrong, where as C will exercise your debugging skills.

Modern C++ is also an option, and surprisingly easy to use. The only catch is that the errors can be very difficult to parse and it's hard to find modern best-practice materials to learn from since most of industry is quite far behind compared to where the language is.

One benefit Rust has is that it's quite new and niche, so the materials tend to be of fresh, without much legacy mindset, and of a relatively high quality. Tbh I'm not sure how Rust is for newbies, but it may be worth a shot. At the very least, the community is passionate and the errors will be readable...

Yep, but...

Littler said on the morning of 10 January his partner had asked her father during the Trump row: "How would you feel if I was the girl in that situation and I'd been sexually assaulted?"

Kris Harrison had replied that he had two other daughters who lived with him so it would not upset him that much.

Littler said Lucy became "quite upset" and ran upstairs.

That sure as hell primes any biases...

The framing and title of the BBC article I read was curious. But even knowing the facts, the story sounds very much like he killed her and said it was an accident - tho that's nothing more than common speculation. A lot of things don't make sense, which lead people to suspect murder; but reality is messy and irrational. We can only hope a thorough investigation was done.

But the amount of divisive social media pushes using this story in one way or another is concerning. The OP is from X which let's users monetize their posts, so a good chunk is probably just intentional engagement bait, just as the article was borderline click bait.

About the author...

In March 2022, O'Malley was slated to speak at an NHS conference on gender dysphoria. The event was cancelled following complaints by NHS whistleblowers, researchers, and trans rights activists, who accused a majority of the speakers as having a "record of extreme prejudice towards trans people". Open Democracy said the speakers had "close links to proponents of anti-trans conversion therapies".

On 10 May 2022, TD Mick Barry raised issue with O'Malley's invitation to the [education] conference, referring to a Twitter Spaces conversation in which she stated "I don't think you need to give empathy at all, none, zero. I think I should because I'm trying to understand them" when asked why woman should have sympathy for who they describe as autogynephiles.

LGBTQIA+ activist Izzy Kamikaze also shared link to the released audio. O'Malley has sent a legal letter to Barry accusing him of defamation and sent similar language to Kamikaze for sharing the link

In 2022, O'Malley appeared in a video produced by the Ickonic film company, which is largely owned by antisemitic conspiracy theorist David Icke

(The space-lizards guy)

In August 2025, the Irish Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy published a piece in which they criticised O'Malley and Genspect as holding an "anti-trans stance" and wanting to marginalise trans people, saying that psychotherapists needed to be alert to disinformation. In response, O'Malley initiated a legal case against them and the writer of the article for defamation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stella_O'Malley

But I don't think her books should be banned or anything like that, even if she was malicious. And there's certainly an ounce of truth in her therapeutic work: there's a whole lot of people who are gender-questioning, nonbinary, or nonconforming, and they should be encouraged to explore those possibilities rather than just be smacked with the trans label. In that sense, I'm of the opinion that clinical psychology has broadly made an overcorrection (understandably...) and can be too eager to see patients as having GD. But for every person sharing a story about feeling like they were influenced into seeing themselves thru a trans lens by providers, there are many more who felt oppressed or denied or disbelieved when they sought care... So it's a difficult subject with a wide range of experiences.

Having space and time for exploration and deconstruction is important. The problem is that there are lots of bad actors who hedge their bigotry with the same language as this to disguise their prejudice and push an agenda informed by nothing but fundamentalism or essentialism...

Hey, guys. Is it a good idea to dunk PC parts in isopropyl alcohol?

I’ll be straight with it. I’m a smoker, I smoke inside, I have a PC that is also inside. I want to clean my PC thoroughly to buy it a few more years. I know about the q tip method, and the compressed air, and general methods of cleaning out gunk and junk from PC parts. But this boy is way too gunked up for a regular ...

When port forwarding, you want that internal IP to be the internal address of the server on your LAN. That way, all port 443 traffic sent to your external ipv4 (as received by your router) is sent to whatever machine is hosting the web server or reverse proxy.

Regarding the www sub domain cname, idk what your registrar is doing but it's common practice to redirected www to your base domain, or vise versa; so web visitors get a consistent experience whether they type www or not. It would probably be best to start fresh though

These are a decent overview

https://forum.hackliberty.org/t/why-we-abandoned-matrix-the-dark-truth-about-user-security-and-safety/224

https://disroot.org/blog/matrix-closure

I don't agree with all of those points, but that's the gist. The metadata issue is becoming a bigger factor. I hope things like katzenpost find massive success...

As for the ecosystem: Element and Synapse are really the only viable implementations. Fluffychat is okay on android but that's about it; most lack features or are using outdated and vulnerable dependencies / are poorly maintained / etc.

But it's not all negatives. One great thing about Matrix is how well they handle multiple devices. It's also been a security weak point, but not too bad and has (relatively) excellent ux (depending on impl...)
