This is not how you read a focus group.

This is a small 13 person group. These groups are waaaay too small to see how the general public feels about policies.

You’re supposed to use focus groups to get insight into WHY people might feel a certain way about a policy. Then you survey a broad audience to see if the sentiment exists at scale.

I’m all for more progressive policies, but I also do a lot of research professionally, and this article annoyed me. These are the wrong conclusions to draw from a little focus group.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Ditto. That was my first question as well. Who was recruited?

Then I realized, that question is irrelevant, because little qualitative studies like this are not supposed to answer broad questions like this.

I imagine there is no malicious intent here. The author likely doesn’t have a background in research and doesn’t understand what information you can reliably pull from a focus group.

I cycle / walk to work, and I 100% want to reign in these heavy ass bikes and doordash scooters that are flying past me at around 30mph. Ditto for when I’m out hiking in the hills with my dogs. About once a week I have to jump out of the way of a budget motorcycle.

This would basically mean petal assist would stop at 20mph if you don’t want a license. 20mph is still pretty damn reasonable if you’re commuting. I’m usually at about 15 to 20 mph.

Roads, trails, and intersections need to be safe for other cyclists, scooter users, and pedestrians. Visit SOMA during commute hours or redwood regional after work. That shit is not safe.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Restricting petal assist to 20mph isn’t going to push people to cars. It’s going to make bike lanes, trails, etc. safer, and make more people want to use them.

People shouldn’t be flying through bike lanes and trails above 20. That shit is bananas.

If we want to push people into cars, we should do what we’re doing now. Surround cyclists / scooter commuters with HMP e-bikes, delivering DoorDash, faster than the speed limit.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

If I could actually drive at 50mph to get into SF, that would cut my commute in half. lol.

Driving into the city is more like a 0-10mph affair during commute hours.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Enforcement will be similar to what happens today. Supply will drop. Retailers will have to decide to deal with the registration of this vehicle class, or sell a lowered powered solution.

These faster e-bikes are big problem in the denser urban areas during busy times. Cutting supply is the only practical way to deal with it. Local traffic police don’t have the time to hang out in the bike lanes all day.

The main issue is that these items have a much bigger list of requirements and stakeholders than the items designed in the past. They’re trying to be everything for everyone.

Something like a simple park bench needs meet requirements for accessibility, weather resistance, vandalism, cleaning, vagrancy - plus all of the opinions of city council and people that show up to nag city council.

First, migrate the shit out of it that should’ve never been in it.

I don’t know why the department in change of natural disaster aid is in the same org as TSA and ICE. That’s so damn silly.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

It’s some old 9/11 BS.

FEMA responds any disaster, including one caused by terrorism. They got rolled into DHS so one chain of command could coordinate responses to terrorism.

Problem is, 99.9% of their day job responding to non-terrorism disasters.

It’s an org structure designed around an edge case, not the more common needs.

A big exception to the rule are the HomeKit secure video cameras that work in Apple’s ecosystem. If your HomeKit compatible camera is going straight into HKSV, and isn’t paired with manufacturer’s own cloud video service, then it’s all E2EE and it can’t be accessed by Apple, even with a warrant.

Problem is, camera offerings are limited, and scrolling clips in HomeKit is paaaainful. Also, if you’re not in Apple’s ecosystem, you can’t use it.

Tesla sales in China crash 45% to lowest level in over three years ( electrek.co )

Tesla’s domestic sales in China collapsed 45% year-over-year in January, falling to just 18,485 units — the automaker’s lowest monthly retail figure in the country since November 2022. The data, released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), paints a grim picture of Tesla’s demand in the world’s largest ...

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

First, there’s the pull-forward effect. December 2025 was Tesla’s best-ever retail month in China at 93,843 units, as buyers rushed to purchase before the reinstatement of a 5% purchase tax on NEVs starting January 1, 2026. That tax had been fully exempted for over a decade. Some of January’s weakness is borrowed December strength.

Second, China’s vehicle trade-in subsidies expired in most cities in mid-November and remain in a transitional phase, dampening demand broadly.

Third, the broader NEV market was weak. China’s total passenger NEV retail sales fell 20% year-over-year in January to 596,000 units, according to CPCA estimates. Even BYD saw its NEV sales drop 30% year-over-year and 50% month-over-month.

But here’s the thing: even BYD’s weak month produced 210,051 units. Tesla’s 18,485 is a different universe.

    Honestly I’m on the fence about yanking the DHS funding. Trump is just going to fund ICE through other piles of money that he got in the BBB and that he’ll just start cutting other more critical services. Like FEMA, which is under the DHS.

    If the Dems can effectively communicate that Trump is using FEMA, TSA, and coastguard money for ICE, then they should cut funding. But I’m not particularly confident about the Dems ability to communicate this. Hell, a lot of people don’t even realize that Trump can still fund ICE if Dems holdback DHS funding. They have not effectively communicated this.

    Word. I’m an insufferable indie snob, and it’s rare that top 40 pop excites me. But, I appreciate good craft, and IMHO, if you’re at the top of the US album charts, and are pulling numbers that beat Taylor Swift, you should probably get to play at the Super Bowl. The people have spoken.
