@TheBreadmonkey This was all triggered by us playing Cinnamon Girl last night as an encore, and what a joyous racket it was- I gotta think on the Bowie thing, maybe something off Lodger? That’s a seriously weird album. Also I adore The Ig and that was one of the first songs of his I heard when I was a mere sprat.

I’m going to write the Iggy Pop story proper one of these days- he radically changed my life.

I've come up with a brilliant new idea for a series of TV and films, called.... Planet Hike. It is not at all like star trek. There is a united coalition of planets that goes exploring and whatnot on a mission of peace, although they have a prime mandate that they're not allowed to get all up in the aliens business. It'll have a totally unique opening monologue. Something like....

Cosmos: the ultimate border. These are the journeys of the spacevessel Endeavour. Its sixty-month assignment: to investigate peculiar unfamiliar celestial bodies, to search out novel existence and hitherto unknown cultural societies, to courageously venture places negative masc-identifiers hath travelled previously!"

So I just submitted to the overwhelming urge to hear Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat for the first time in umpteen years. It’s a mixed bag, but first off, there’s some pretty damn good bass playing happening down there. Very intentional line that in lesser hands might just have been roots.

The piano lick gets really repetitive. The solo section with 5 different short bits is almost cool, but ultimately the distorted guitar section is way out of place. Alan Parsons was, unfortunately, right about the saxophone part, which may have been the precursor to every damn MOR song needing a sax break for the ensuing 10 years. But in this case, it fits.

Lyrically, the female character is one-dimensional and I feel a subtle misogyny that might have been solved by altering the one line to “You know some day she’s bound to leave you,” which would have given the mystery woman some agency beyond being available for sex.

It’s a nice melody and I still like Stewart’s voice. I’m going to leave it on my phone because I’m sentimental and it’s evocative, and I rank it ⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5.

The opinions expressed in this rambling, pointless toot are strictly those of the poster, no warranty expressed or implied. Listen at your own risk.

I see people comment "I lost 3 followers today because x". Not being critical but I just don't notice, unless someone who chats or engages regularly disappears.

I really don't pay any attention to numbers because frankly I have no idea why anyone would listen to this, frankly scattergun, mix of earnest, sometimes wholesome musings entwined with unhinged, borderline obscene flights of fancy, interspersed with slightly pretentious takes on music and culture, and just, whatever. I'm more surprised people stick around, but at the same time, I follow others for exactly that. I love the random mess that folks want to share of themselves, however real or contrived it is. Even lies can be true, if they come from the right place.

I'm sure 75% of my "followers" (hate that term) have either left or never see my nonsense, but occasionally I do pause and think, do you want to say this to 1,300+ people, who in turn could spread these words exponentially, about your silly thoughts or dearest memories?

Here I've found somewhere I'm comfortable saying pretty much whatever I want because, on the whole, friends and strangers alike, are good people who appreciate the same liberty I do.

Lastly, to people "following" me. Apologies if I haven't followed back yet. Typically I will, particularly if we talk, but sometimes it takes me a while to notice otherwise. If you post/boost a lot about stuff I'm not really interested in then it's pointless me following back, but if you talk to me I'll almost always chat.

Stay weird lovely Fedifolk ❤️

Weird (but memorable) record store experience:

Last summer, my wife, daughter, and an old friend of ours (+ her kids) vacationed in Washington DC for a week. One afternoon, I ducked into a record store in Adams Morgan called Smash, which has been around for eons if you count their original storefront in Georgetown.

Back in the 90s, when I was working at a Trenton-based record shop/mailorder place called Burning Airlines (so named for the Brian Eno song), we used to place wholesale orders for Doc Martens through Smash. This was before said footwear could be acquired at the mall or online, so I like to think I played an important role in enabling punk kids to look the part in the just-pre-grunge era.

Anyway, I ducked into Smash hoping to find my old Doc Marten contact — with whom I used to talk on the phone every week and established a friendly rapport with after several years — still involved with the shop. (Turns out he is, but he'd already left for the day.) But while I WAS there, I enjoyed some A+ eavesdropping on two gentlemen who were browsing vinyl a few bins down from me. If I had to guess, I would say they were both just south of 30.

These guys remarked upon nearly every single record they flipped through, yet their only frame of reference seemed to be... Nirvana. As in, all music could only be described or understood based upon how much it sounded like or related to Nirvana.

Radiohead. The Spin Doctors. Metallica. The Circle Jerks. Madonna. Minor Threat. None were spared.

These guys both had fierce Baltimore accents, so keep that in mind while you consider the following exchange, which I witnessed firsthand.

Guy #1: Joy Division, now THAT'S a great band.

Guy #2: Y'know, I've only listened to them a couple of times but I don't like 'em.

Guy #1: Really? What didn't you like about 'em?

Guy #2: Y'know, I really don't remember what they sound like but I've read that Kurt Cobain liked 'em.

Guy #1: They're really unique and have a really original sound.

Guy #2: How would you describe that sound?

(Note: This really is how they talked. It sounded like the dialog at the beginning of that Dead Milkmen song about the car.)

Guy #1: Sort of like... jammy. But sometimes really heavy like Nirvana with a girl singer.

Guy: 2: Huh, that sounds pretty good. Maybe I should listen to them again.

(For anyone reading this who has never heard them, “Jammy but heavy like Nirvana with a girl singer" is a terrible description for Joy Division.)

A few moments later, Kurt Cobain came up again when they happened upon a record by the Wipers. Neither of them had actually heard the Wipers, though they did know that Kurt was a fan. This lead to talk of other bands of which he was a fan, such as:

Guy #1: Kurt liked that Scottish band and covered a bunch of their songs.

Guy #2: Oh yeah, Celtic Frost!

(It was a this point that I started looking around to see if Eric Andre was filming an episode of his TV show in the store, with me as an inadvertent bystander.)

Guy #1: No...no... wait. That's not it, it's not Celtic Frost.

Guy #2: (Gazing expectantly into eyes of Guy #1)

Guy #1: It was the Vaselines. That's the Scottish band Cobain was into. He used to be in a Melvins cover band with their singer.

Guy #2: Wow. I know the Nirvana versions, but what are the Vaselines like?

Guy #1: They're sort of noodly... but also heavy.

I wound up hanging around the store for ten minutes longer than I really needed to just to continue listening to them. I was secretly hoping they would have some powerful insights on the $5 Daniel Higgs record I was in the process of liberating, but alas. When I left they were looking at bootleg Fugazi posters.

Devils_Rancher ,
@Devils_Rancher@beige.party avatar

@mlupica Ah yes, the Beatles - like Nirvana, but less shouty with cleaner guitars and more harmonies. I think Cobain listened to them some.
