I love hiking and have just completed my first long distance walk. Sadly work and family commitments mean I can't go out hiking as much as I'd like. Sometimes my pug will join me on some of my hikes, but he can't walk too long or he has to be carried.

Other interests include travelling, reading, crocheting, watching Kdramas and learning Korean.

My sister and I decided to give up on Last Summer in the middle of episode 3. It was dragging SO much, there was no clear conflict (probably because they want to keep it a mystery but it doesn't work) and for some reason Lee Jae-wook has forgotten how to act. He's usually so good but he either is supposed to be a weird asshole with fake emotions or he got really bad direction. Anyway, we will use our time to watch something we actually do enjoy.

I am going to make a thread of the books I read in 2026 with some commentary. Just for myself but anyone is welcome to follow along.

  1. White Mulberry by Rose Kwon Easton

Rose Kwon Easton based this story on the life of her grandmother, who moved from Korea to Japan during the Japanese occupation and who later moved back to Korea with her son.

It really reminded me of Pachinko, especially the parts set in Japan with how much Koreans struggled and were shunned. An amazing read, one I couldn't put down. I really felt for Miyoung and her struggle to remain true to herself while trying to carve a life for herself under very difficult circumstances.

  1. The Trees by Percival Everett

"The Trees is a page-turner that opens with a series of brutal murders in the rural town of Money, Mississippi. When a pair of detectives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive, they meet expected resistance from the local sheriff, his deputy, the coroner, and a string of racist White townsfolk."

This was such a gripping read, I literally couldn't put it down. I read it in one day. I'd never heard of Percival Everett before but Bill Nighy recommended this on his podcast and the library had the ebook so I figured I'd check it out. I'm so glad I did. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Will definitely check out more of Percival Everett's writing.

"A cup of tea, a loaf of chicken - and thou..."

Currently important stuff. Lily the chicken has taken to van life with gusto, and is exploring* Shawbost beach, Outer Hebrides.

Spouse is having some non-chicken time.

@Badgardener That is so awesome and I'm so jealous of you being in the Outer Hebrides. I would love to go back there (and likely will in the not-so-distant future).

I have an Instagram account just for posting pictures of my pug for my oldest who lives in the Netherlands and who misses the pug. I follow a handful of accounts but spend overall less than 5 minutes on IG after I post my daily photo. It's absolutely awful. The feed is nothing but garbage with "suggested for you" accounts I couldn't care less about. I honestly don't understand why anyone likes IG. It's completely unusable in my opinion. Maybe I'm just spoiled with Mastodon and Pixelfed.

@JillsJoy I even find it hard to get celebrity news from the people and outlets I do follow as my feed is probably 80% ads and crap that is recommended with a small smattering of post of people I actually do follow.

I'm sick of using streaming services for music and since I have a ton of amazing music on CD I think it's time to convert those to MP3s and start using an MP3 player again. Does anyone have any good recommendations for an MP3 player I can use bluetooth wireless headphones with?

I know this is a long shot, but nothing ventured, nothing gained and maybe the fediverse can help.

🇬🇧My oldest son (19) is moving to Eindhoven to study design at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He's looking for a room to rent, which is proving very difficult. Is there anyone in the fediverse who can help him with a room either in Eindhoven or nearby? He doesn't mind commuting.
