For the love of all that is good, someone PLEASE create a browser UI around Servo that is:

  • Community governed

I worked professionally with high profile campaigns for years. I am 100% certain a campaign would go viral, with stretch goals blown away.

As someone who helped small startups market themselves and raise (non VC) funding, I couldn't agree more.

I'll add the caveat that you have to be ruthless about making sure your marketing messages (literal and implied) always focus on full, truthful, unexaggerated info.

When there is a real benefit though, it should be shouted from the rooftops everywhere there are real people whose lives would be improved.

Hiding good things from people with a problem, to me, is unethical. Too many people, especially in , are embarrassed to tell the truth about good stuff they're doing in case someone thinks they're doing it for the "wrong" reasons (ie just $$$).

Easy fix: do stuff for the right reasons and use the $ to help more people the ethical way!

YouTube used an AI smoothing filter that made the videos look like they were AI generated, and didn’t tell Beato, Shull, or their viewers that they were doing it. They only admitted to it after the two made videos proving it happened, later claiming it was only a 'limited test'.”

Quite often I see people publish these "cool Peertube channels" blog / fedi posts, and I'm totally here for that. That said, IU'd love it if someone (maybe @FediVideo ?) actually made regular short videos showing roundups like these, with clips so it's possible to get a sense of the channels without having to load each channel up in another tab, choose a video sit through the start and repeat for every channel.

I'd love more of a "trailer style" summary with a voiceover of why they're cool, with clips showing underneath, possibly with each video around a theme eg, educational, music, technology etc.

Something you didn't report on in this video is the hints and speculation going around about the price. I saw a statement from Valve saying the price of the index is the upper limit. There was also an interview with the lead hardware engineer saying they intend it to be "as affordable as possible". Various articles are suggesting somewhere between $499 and $999. It would still be great to get an overall breakdown though, along with a similar breakdown for potential preorder and release dates.

If this is even vaguely affordable, I'll be getting 1-3.

I've got to say, I completely agree with you.

You might completely trust the current leadership of Signal now. Still, centralizing all it's users in one place, with a such a powerful identifier as a phone number, on American Google servers no less, just makes it too tempting a target for governments and even future leadership.

I'd rather trust that code is publicly visible, hosted by me with data stored in thousands of places to disincentivize bad actors.

There are issues, but mainly ones that improve with success. Centralization gets even worse.

With the US speedrunning fascism and other places trying to copy them, it's never been more important to keep the communications of your friends and loved ones securely in your own hands.

I really believe in supporting Servo as an independent, non-profit rendering engine (and boy do we need one now!).

I followed this account in hopes of finding some cool updates that I could share with people to help promote the project.

The trouble is that the updates posted always just read like developer jargon and don't give much of a sense of what's useful or exciting about the latest improvements.

Maybe it would help to have pictures of what a webpage would have looked like before and after the improvements would help? Just something to translate improvements back to something people outside the project would understand.

Anyway, keep up the great work. It's appreciated, now more than ever!

Who knows if Vivaldi is "the only sensible selection right now"? Parts of their code are proprietary and hidden so who knows what crap could be going on in there? Even if 90% of the code was open, guess where the evil crap that users would be horrified would be? That's exactly what we've seen Google do often (who controls Vivaldi's engine).

I understand that it's subjective, but to me, moving from an open source browser to one with proprietary code and an engine controlled by a surveillance behemoth doesn't feel like a "sensible" choice.

I agree that other options such as Verso (based on Servo) need bigger teams. To me that's an argument to support them more, rather than supporting proprietary code and a surveillance capitalism controlled engine.

Makes that TWO pitches I've received in the last 24h that included the delightful phrase "new AI-powered cloud security and compliance software."

There's so much to unpack here it's hard to know where to start (or stop), but it seems to suggest that some new AI-based technology has been devised to help close security compliance gaps. #1: Checking boxes is not where most organizations are failing. #2 Where are the basic standards of care for AI-based software that would give this untested technology the right to claim the ability to audit anything? Let alone itself.

The golden rule for physicians is "First, do no harm." Somehow, we've grown accustomed to security products and software that violate this basic idea six ways from Sunday.

A friendly, gentle PSA:

Especially if you consume a lot of news these days, please be aware that all of the fear and uncertainty that is scrawled across every headline and is the basis for everything coming out of Washington activates the limbic system in your brain. That's the deep animal part of your noggin that puts you into a survival-panic. The evolutionary purpose of this system is to shut down the logical parts of your brain and make you run, now, to survive.

The actual, literal objective of the firehose of terror they're drowning us in is to put as many people as possible into limbic system burnout, a state of long-term, perhaps permanent, limbic system activation. So, please, check your timeline and your posting habits. Consider the ratios in there of joy to fear--and adjust things toward joy, going forward, if you need to.

They need us to feel vulnerable all the time.
