Maybe half the reason so many people are burnt out now is because the "no one is going to help you" mentality of our society encourages masking?

People spend their whole lives trying to prove to the machine that they aren't a burden, so that they aren't next on the chopping block. If they have a problem with that, well "it's up to you to deal with that." ...

This is why I like bimboism/himboism. Society wants us to be smart and you can reject that. It's okay to be dumb and present yourself as dumb. Honestly, it's freeing and it's something I need to exercise more.

If you like browsing old websites, I've got a treat for you, an archive of geocities with lots of pages kept intact and working. ( restorativland.org )

Archive.org while great is also really incomplete with busted pages not showing media correctly (probably because it was never saved). Browsing some of these homepages on restorativland it looks like a more comprehensive archive project.

I had a geocities when I was about 10 years old where I would put cheats for video games and just random stuff. I would come up with my own game genie code on the NES by changing a few values of existing codes. I found some cool stuff and it was a ton of fun. I had this big book about HTML that I memorized and made my website from scratch. At this point I'm not sure I'd be able to recognize it even if it was on there.

I made software I absolute hate in principle but it works so well in practice. It's all kubernetes (bad), yaml (bad), graphql (bad), and made for vibe coding (bad). I hate myself for spawning this monstrosity into existence but its the shortest path to build the thing I wanted to build for a few years.

Cutting LLM token usage by 80% using recursive document analysis

When you employ AI agents, there’s a significant volume problem for document study. Reading one file of 1000 lines consumes about 10,000 tokens. Token consumption incurs costs and time penalties. Codebases with dozens or hundreds of files, a common case for real world projects, can easily exceed 100,000 tokens in size when the ...

Hey, good job, looks cool. A few observations: It makes sense to aggressively use token caching. It makes sense to improve context accuracy by treating docs as external to the input prompt. Smaller context = more calls, faster CoT, higher llm concurrency. We see a lot of this now, where coding agents aggressively cache documents, and use of tools to do more complicated tasks, e.g. code gen as tool use. I also see more moving away from RAG and more towards using good ole gnu tools like grep as exploration hints. RAG approaches are definitely is more prone to contextual bandit problems. But IMO, balancing exploration with exploitation is fundamentally a reinforcement learning problem rather than a linear flow from recursive llm calls, but it acts a reasonable surrogate model, and our RL algorithms consistently fall short. For example, you could help govern exploration behavior using deep-q or ppo to guide search, e.g. have your llm produce a top-5 exploration s-expression horizon, feed the exploration into the rl algorithm with cosine similarity on vectors + metadata (file size, LOC, etc) as features, then rank the exploration space. This would further reduce token count and increase parallelization in exploration (since top-n results are computed as batch in the llm with only marginal overhead).

Personally, I just wish I had a good search tool that didn't expose all of the LLM tomfoolery. For example, today I needed to find where a particular sql table was defined in the code since it used some crazy ORM and an initial grep didn't yield results so I jammed into openai codex and it found it. This was useful to me where github search was useless. I need more context-aware search, and it would be better if I could combine it with all of the other docs and slack convos floating around. Actual coding tasks require a greater level of human interaction where opaque results are less useful.

But again, good job, looks cool.

I try my best to help out my cousin but she's 100% there. Any hiccup and she will be homeless. She has persistent mental health issues that she tries to get treatment for but is unable to get anyone to actually help her (her words and I know she tries). She has provisions already in place for when she eventually dips below the line of normal self care. My family is surprised she isn't already homeless. But she somehow holds a full time+ (40-50 hours a week) job and never misses a day working in health care intake at an ER in a hospital and has had that job for 5+ years.

The original term had a real meaning:

  • First world: Capitalist and part of NATO
  • Second world: Soviet countries
  • Third world: All other countries

So Sweden, Finland, and Ireland are all Third world because of their neutrality. The term has drifted to a meaningless term and usually just means 'poor' or 'evil' depend on context. I wish words still had meanings.

One guy I knew in college was a failson like this. Lived off his dad's big DC lawyer money. He would pay me $40 to drive him to a psychic every other week. He wanted to do some dumb AI startup thing back in 2013 so I wrote his foundational software in an afternoon and he's been trying to milk it ever sense. I think I have equity because I get random investor update emails but I have no idea how much because I never agreed to any payout. Like 7 years later he got evicted from his own company for spending the company's money on cocaine, then he started a new one that does the same thing. He's a mobile lawsuit machine and sues everyone so I avoid him like the plague. For example, he totaled a rental because hes an insane driver and blamed the rental company and got a big settlement. He was perfectly fine. He was also caught selling weed in college and was expelled but he sued the college for defamation because they brought him on campus in cuffs. The college backed down and he graduated somehow after 7+ years. He now TEDx talks and claims hes a lecturer at a university in poland because he gave a talk once. If I showed you a picture, you would instantly identify that he is a guy who does a lot of cocaine and does business.

The government needs to pull a lot of levers before a capital solution is viable. But there is just no threat that gas prices will go up within the lifespan of the car (next 8 years), and gas prices are low relative to US income. Couple that with poor infrastructure for EVs and it's a non-starter for the majority of americans, regardless of price.

Trump has framed the need for comprehensive AI regulation as both a necessity for the technology’s development and as a means of preventing leftist ideology from infiltrating generative AI– a common conservative grievance among tech leaders such as Elon Musk.

“You can’t go through 50 states. You have to get one approval. Fifty is a disaster. You’ll have one woke state and you’ll have to do all woke,” Trump said at the US-Saudi Investment Forum last month. “You’ll have a couple of wokesters and you don’t wanna do that. You wanna get the AI done.”

Earlier this week, he reiterated that sentiment in a post on Truth Social, saying: “We are beating ALL COUNTRIES at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if we are going to have 50 States, many of them bad actors, involved in RULES and the APPROVAL PROCESS. THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT ABOUT THIS! AI WILL BE DESTROYED IN ITS INFANCY!”

I just read the book. He was the head programmer and had a team back in the states. He had a falling out with hammond about a budget overrun which he had to absorb the cost, which is why he wanted to get back at him and make some money by stealing the embryos.

The book really outlines the shortsightedness of capital and it's all still relevant. They really get into the park's construction and design decisions. Honestly I wished the movie was done by Kubrick instead of Spielberg where it features all of the cost cutting and incompetence which convinced you that the park was doomed to fail, and then it fails.

I think my favorite part of the book was when the rival company wanted to steal InGen's work but needed board approval so they do this song and dance to get board approval to do it in a way that doesn't open them up to liability. It's like what happened with the PG&E fires a few years ago, where nobody on the board or executive team got in any trouble because they did neglect in this special way that allows them to get a get-out-of-jail-free card.

I did a project where i used genetic algorithms to evolve a set of glyphs that tried to fit themselves into whatever the user prompted, using an image vectorization model as part of the fitness function. I had it do a bunch of things like try to generate shapes, attempt color scaling, limit pallets, use extended glyphs to tune, and other applications of art theory. Essentially an ascii art generator but more freeform. I used it to generate some fun images that would maybe be considered art, some things came out cool looking. But I never once considered anything it created as my original art. Like when I do linocut, I often trace and freehand many things before I end up at the linework that I want to cut, and I’ll consider that to be my art. I wondered if the act of doing a lot of work would make it be art, but my gut said no absolutely not. It was more of a technical achievement, like a painting that is technically well executed but had no creative input. But I don’t consider myself an artist tho.

It's impossible to find anything on google because it's all vector search nonsense now.

BigWeed , (edited )

A very simple vector example:

Assume we have an array of 26 binary variables, one for each letter of the alphabet. We flip to 1 if the letter is present in the word.
Dog -> [0,0,0,1,0…]
Cat -> [1,0,1,0,0…]

Then we can do a search by taking a target word and doing a cosine similarly search, roughly we find the binary array most similar to a given array to compute a score.

Modern models compute a much more complicated vector by using the context of the words around them. Multimodal image models use a combination of images and text to train a model so later you can use pass it some text to get a vector.

There are some things out there about doing math on vectors because the form a latent space, for example: ‘king - man + woman = queen’ but empirical tests show that this doesn’t quite hold up on modern models. 3blue1brown has a video on vector math which is worth a watch.
