Yesterday Cory Doctorow argued that refusal to use LLMs was mere "neoliberal purity culture". I think his argument is a strawman, doesn't align with his own actions and delegitimizes important political actions we need to make in order to build a better cyberphysical world.

As Billionaires make excuses for being 'conned' by Jeffrey Epstein (Lex Wexner claims he was naive), one might wonder how this compromises their self-narrative that deserve their riches because they are somehow much better than normal folk.

If you're naive about a convicted sex offender, we might think that your riches are a lot less due to your genius and more to do with plain luck.

And, if its just a lucky break, then a wealth tax looks less contentious!

Axomamma ,

@ChrisMayLA6 Should people who are as naive as Wexner claims he was really be getting paid such enormous salaries?

I'd argue no.

Having transcribed a number of depositions of CEOs, CFOs and the like, I'm always struck by what incredibly poor memories they have of actions they took, orders they gave, who they spoke to or what they themselves said. And none of them keep notes.

Finally, 35 years after Hillsborough itself, the Hillsborugh Inquiry has revealed (as many expected) widespread misconduct & deception over the day's deaths by members of South Yorkshire police.... 12 named officers all have escaped misconduct cases by retiring, while the inquiry also uncovered even more doctored & amended police reports of the incident, all intended to blame the victims of the police's actions.

The data broker industry is losing their minds over more than 150+ lawsuits filed against them by Atlas Data Privacy for alleged violations of Daniel's Law. The NJ statute gives law enforcement in that state special rights to have their personal information redacted from data broker and people-search services. The law specifically allows for non-trivial financial damages for each violation, and Atlas is seeking relief on behalf of >20k NJ residents.

And now in the face of intense lobbying by the data broker industry, NJ lawmakers are proposing to weaken Daniel's Law. The proposed changes "would remove covered individuals’ ability to select an assignee to sue to enforce Daniel’s Law on their behalf, and it would give judges discretion to award damages in such cases. Those awards are mandatory under existing law."

"This is the first time that the AIVD and MIVD have acknowledged that developments in the United States, where human rights and the rule of law are under pressure, have consequences for the intelligence relationship.
