Kosmos nie jest takim pustkowiem, za jakie się go uważa. No, prawie.

💥 ASTEROID COLLISION IN ANOTHER SOLAR SYSTEM 💥
That famous “planet” near the bright star Fomalhaut? Not a planet. New Hubble data shows it — and a second object — are expanding debris clouds from massive asteroid collisions. Astronomers now think these smashups are far more common than models predicted. Space is rough out there.

This is a blue dwarf galaxy called Markarian 178 (Mrk 178)! It is 13 million LY away and is rife with Wolf–Rayet stars.

It's located in the Ursa Major (we covered some of the fun of this constellation, here: https://starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/e/ursa-major-cosmic-background/)

Hubble Space Telescope image of Arp 4.

This image contains two galaxies, a larger irregular galaxy, Arp 4, and a small spiral galaxy PGC 6629.

In this image, the luminosity comes from Hubble ACS/WFC observations, and color comes from PanSTARRS.

As soon as the end of February, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory will launch a new telescope into orbit around the Earth called SPHEREx. The funnel-shaped telescope weighs about as much as a grand piano and has a larger field of vision than other telescopes like Hubble and the JWST. @npr has more:
