So, I finally got my #oneplus6 out from the shop.... That was the worst experience ever and they're a long-time spot I go to... That's a whole other story. #enshifification Anyway, the one plus (#ihavejokes) is that the battery replacement went great. I've expressed some reservation switching from my #pixel3a to the op6... But ...
Not sure if any of the #mobilelinux people have seen it but looks like theres a new mobile linux distro out there with a new custom UI built on QT6 inspired by the blackberry days. It seems like a nice UI design, quickly ran on my PT2. Its immutable and looks like its enabling PREEMPT_RT to reduce latency in the UX. So far it looks like its only been tested on a #OnePlus6 but hopefully theres more and hopefully its shell makes it up to #postmarketos directly
As I'm finding my way back to active duty in postmarketOS, I'm yet again concluding that I just can't handle maintaining a kernel fork anymore with no upstream in sight.
So this is yet another call for someone to take over rebasing and updating the SDM845 kernel. I'm happy to help deal with regressions, but I'm spending so much of my time lately working on tooling and U-Boot, something has to give and that has been the kernel maintenance.
Joel has done a great job at helping out (and hopefully will continue to do so!) but we're lacking someone to deal with regular updates, get all the devices tested, etc...
If this is something you're interested in and you have some relevant experience please let me know! so many folks are relying on SDM845 devices for their Linux Mobile use or development, so providing some kind of relatively stable platform is pretty important...
If you use #Phosh (or another WM, like Sway, see below) without a session manager/greeter (like gdm, phrog,... - you are save on Mobian) that unlocks your keyring after login, be careful when using adding apps to your autostart (e.g., with https://linuxphoneapps.org/apps/io.github.flattool.ignition/) that need an unlocked keyring to function (e.g., Fractal or Flare).
I managed to shoot myself in the foot with this twice (months ago and yesterday), starting to believe this was a weird hardware issue on my 256GB #oneplus6. I could not login into Phosh (it would be stuck on "Checking ..."), ssh login was also impossible - but nothing login related in journalctl (that I could access thanks to Jumpdrive and chroot).
(And now I'll look into setting up Phrog with #postmarketOS with systemd, because I want those notifications when my significant other tries to reach me but keep forgetting to start apps manually.)
When my laptop spontaneously dies in the middle of a trip, and I still need to finish a presentation, my #OnePlus6 with
@postmarketOS comes to the rescue.
A HUGE thanks to everyone working to make #LinuxPhones a thing.
A desk with a mobile phone on a stand, a bluetooth keyboard, mouse. The phone is presently installing LaTeX.
Gnome 48 also brings so many improvements to Gnome Mobile.
Scrolling is just as smooth as it's on Android.
OSK and Touch text selection are better now.
And the cameras have started working on #Oneplus6
Overall, it's getting to where it is starting to feel like a real alternative 🤩️.
My dream of crawling away from the clutches of Big-Tech gets closer.
I gave KDE Plasma Mobile another go. It improved a LOT over the past few months. No crashes yet! It's a lot more stable now. Although not as stable as Phosh.
I like their whole "just copy Android" philosophy. Everything feels familiar and intuitive. I might keep it like this.
