So I see doing the rounds as a supposed alternative

Judging from the Codeberg issues [1] and the self-professed ignorance of the prompter about fundamentals of federation and software dev [2], it seems highly likely that Nolto is vibe-coded

Superficially feature-rich but lots of loose ends and basic errors, this is a privacy and security disaster waiting to happen — I would not touch this with a barge-pole 😬

[1] https://codeberg.org/Tensetti/Nolto/issues?q=&type=all&sort=relevance&state=open&labels=&milestone=0&project=0&assignee=0&poster=0&archived=false

[2] https://codeberg.org/Tensetti/Nolto/issues/31#issuecomment-10292844

User pointing out: 'Also, the README file clearly says that everything is acctually implemented.' Prompter JTensetti: 'Because it’s hard to stay on track with everything, I’m not working full time on this. I had it working and then something happened and now it’s not working.'

GrapheneOS is expanding beyond Google Pixel 🔐
A major Snapdragon-powered OEM will soon support the security-first OS 📱

The unnamed device—using Snapdragon 8 Gen 5—is expected to offer similar pricing and full installability 💻
Not Fairphone; OnePlus is a strong candidate, but unconfirmed 🤔

I see your point, and I understand the operating system definition can depend on the context—whether you see it as just the kernel or the complete system.

I'm not sure if even the @fsf would fully endorse my view, but I find their logic compelling. Here is the central question: unless you are running a pure kernel like by itself (a project focused on a , hosted at kernel.org), then calling the entire system "Linux" isn't a meaningful name for a complete, usable . I recognize what people usually refer to as "Linux" is, in fact, a system designed to be .

To illustrate: if we apply the logic of naming the whole system after its kernel, then why do we call it "Android" and not just "Linux"? After all, uses Linux too, yet we correctly recognize it as a distinct system.

So why is GNU so often forgotten and replaced by "Linux" when talking about personal or server computers? (Only in this context?) I believe this isn't accidental—it often overlooks the deeper vision of a project designed from the start to ensure software freedom for its users.

When we are running only the kernel (whatever the purpose may be), then by all means, let's call the OS "Linux." But when it's part of a larger, distinct system—like the GNU OS—then it should be recognized as such.

I'd like to add a final thought: I know it can sometimes be annoying to insist on this when it seems that everyone understands what "Linux" means, even if we disagree with the term. But this is part of the advocacy—sometimes it involves emphasizing a technicality that may even be controversial, in order to reinforce public awareness of GNU and the philosophy of free software.

A brief debate like this one, right here, may be enough for someone to realize what GNU is, which is already a desired outcome. Who knows, it might even spark a flame of curiosity, leading them to research this fascinating topic further.

Gee. Thanks Fediverse.

When I complain about Windows, I literally never thought about running Linux in my life.

As I stare at my shelf full of Linux laptops.

Or look back at my decades of working and playing with Linux systems.

Or the Linux stickers on my desk.

Or ...

Sometimes people just need to use Windows. Or Mac. Or Ubuntu. Or something else you don't like.

Stop being elitist snobs about it when someone complains about the tool they're using. I PROMISE you every single person on this corner of the Fediverse has heard "you should use Linux" a thousand times. They have their reasons to use something else. And they're allowed to complain about it.

This sort of shit is why I hate the FOSS community.

Edit: I felt like registering https://uselinuxinstead.com/ as a catchall for reasons people may choose not to use a Linux system for their personal use cases. It's as a GitHub Pages so feel free to put issues or PRs if you want to suggest content.

If I feel more generous later, after making a list of things, I'll also include some links on each section pointing to resources of "okay this was my reason, but maybe if I understood how to do ________ I could give Linux a try."

But the primary point is to have a parked list to hand to folks insisting that you should use Linux for everything and everybody simply because you're frustrated about one specific frustrating thing on MS or Apple or Android or Chromebook or whatever else.
