The of Google maps 🤨

Not going back to Google Maps after I tried this

“I've been using Google Maps for years, but I was tired of the distractions.

Maps has so many ads and pins, with labels galore and a map so detailed with points of interest that it's distracting to the point of sometimes being overwhelming”

now finds it ok to spill slop allover their article, which provides no information whatsoever about what kind of "AI" model was used, not to mention details. Where exactly is such "intelligence" hidden?

Missing technical information that would make it interesting from a technical point of view, the article becomes just another piece of similar boring press releases that use "AI" as a buzzword for anything involving pattern recognition and neural networks.

Lokjo is a european substitute for googlemaps.

No cookies, no data, no nothing.

When you search locations by category (clothing shop, coffee bar, museum etc) it shows all locations at once. Except for corporations and chains, they get a grey dot.

The “what’s your map” podcast has this gem of an episode.

Smuggling Silk: WWII Escape Maps with Dr. Barbara A. Bond

“Together, they pour over an important but unassuming silk escape map of Danzig (Gdansk) port from World War II. What information is presented on the map, and what has been intentionally excluded?“

The show notes has a link to the map, which you really should peruse while you’re listening to it.

Very nice consolidated terrain tiles from public DEM data, covering (almost ?) the whole globe. May try to use it in my maps soon.

For France, it uses the RGE Alti (5m and 1m) models from the IGN (which contains updates from Lidar data, but maybe not the latest and highest resolution).

Super that @organicmaps can now be set as default app for navigation! However, when selecting addresses in Apple Calendar, the message still appears that no default app is installed (or Apple Maps still opens if it is still installed on the iPhone).

Vector-art people, and GIS people, and Gamers.

What's your favourite or rather most efficient way of turning an existing map (usually too complicated for game use - or cluttered) into a neat condensed vector (or anything I suppose) map for a game?

I have lots of 1880s-1920s maps I want to simplify for use, and cant decide if should try to vectorise them in Illustrator then tidy up, or scan them and trace over them by hand.. or what.

Obviously different from newly created maps
