We are still not getting to grips with homelessness.
As Anton Roberts (MMU) argues what is needed is a public health approach to homelessness with a clear 'housing first' approach.
Not only is this more compassionate towards the individuals who find themselves without a permanent (established) dwelling, it also makes clear economic sense.
But that would require our political class to see the homeless as deserving of help not merely feckless.
So, it now transpires that Home REIT a company that thought there could be a private finance solution to homelessness now is subject to a Serious Fraud Office investigation, which has included the arrest of six people associated with the firm.
For those who see the possibility of 'doing well, from doing good' this may be blow to their confidence that can be a market solution to social problems...

The conservative ethos distilled: It's
not a problem unless it happens to
me, and when it does happen to me I
am absolutely outraged that other
people let it happen to me
John Pavlovitz posted the following: "Stop spending so much time and energy trying to make gay people "not gay" or transgender people "not transgender"—it isn't going to happen.
Instead, try making: hungry people not hungry, hurting people not feel hurt, lonely people not feel alone."
i had a positive TB test in the ‘90s SF requiring 1yr of meds. i got it from a drug recovery meeting & can never give blood again. i’m ever so lucky considering my own IV drug use & houselessness. there is no reason why i’m still alive when so many friends have passed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly Crisis, the homelessness charity, has decided on direct action on housing, and is seeking to become a (major?) landlord.
Given the continuing lack of a wide-spread revival of social housing provision, this seems like it may be a necessary move for the charity to continue to make a difference on homelessness.
It will be interesting to see how this develops & how/whether it shifts the dial on social housing?
meanwhile in the #UK, one of the richest countries in the world, a huge rise in #homelessness is creating apocalyptic scenes in every city, with #bristol in 2nd place..
Given the weakness of provisions to force developers to provide a proportion of (so called) affordable homes as part of any new housing development, the news that the Housing Minister & Sadiq Khan seem to be preparing a partial holiday from such requirements (albeit likely time limited) looks like an unwelcome strategy to revive house building in London;
Some 4 million people in the U.S. could lose federal housing assistance under new plans from the Trump administration, say experts who reviewed drafts of two unpublished rules obtained by ProPublica.
So I have moved over mainly to Bsky but I figured I should post this here too. I've posted it to Lemmy anyway... I need help and I'm desperately sorry to ask. Being screwed over by someone I loved wasn't what I had on my bingo card. I've got a post on Ko-fi that explains more... I'm sorry for asking for help AGAIN...
