I left the liberal Twin Cities and went to my super conservative, rural hometown to protest. I was not a paid protester but I did get a payday!

I’m talking on my orange iPhone holding a sign with Simba on it that says “no kings no kings la la la la la la”
My mom and me sitting on a bench
Looking down the street at the crowd gathered

FULL TALK | Norman Finkelstein at UMass: Gaza, Truth & the Battle for Free Speech - YouTube

Recommended to me by @DrALJONES - now spreading it myself. I cannot recommend this enough. A good summary of the history of Palestine, and specifically Gaza, giving much needed context to what happened on Oct 7. He also addresses the loss of freedom of speech in the US.

A new Pentagon policy mandating pre-approval for unclassified information poses a serious threat to press freedom and government transparency, potentially undermining established First Amendment protections. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/10/06/world/pentagon-press-policy-a-threat-to-free-speech/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon

(WaPo) U.S. used a transnational crime unit to secretly target campus protesters. A Tufts University graduate student was among those targeted after the Trump administration created a “tiger team” to investigate pro-Palestinian activists. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/10/02/trump-administration-university-pro-palestine-activists/

A federal trial that ended Tuesday revealed for the first time the story behind the images, showing how the government assigned a special team to target Ozturk and other pro-Palestinian activists, laying the groundwork for their highly unusual arrests.
Ozturk had committed no crime, yet her detention was a priority for the new Trump administration. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/10/02/trump-administration-university-pro-palestine-activists/

The U.S. Department of Defense wants to limit what journalists who cover the Pentagon can report, asking them to sign a pledge to only write about approved material. The Columbia Journalism Review reports on what it means, and how journalists and sources are reacting.

"MAGA is unlikely to dominate America’s media. Yet even if Mr Trump does not win his battle, America could still lose. In a fragmented attention economy the best way to break through is to call everything an apocalypse, urge revolution or denounce fascism. If all the rewards go to divisive political entertainment, then founding good government on a common understanding of facts becomes ever harder. America survived a partisan press in the 19th century; it will probably do so in the 21st. But the vaudevillisation of the public square is a heavy burden on an overburdened democracy."

Trump regime now requires press to sign a document agreeing not to obtain or possess "unauthorized" information.

https://archive.ph/3GGyU

Anyone who agrees to this is not qualified to call himself or herself a journalist.

But I'm betting most Big Journalism orgs will go ahead and sign.

@schymans@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Wow, not only will they be forbidden to report on issues the Trump-regime does not authorise, but they will not even be allowed to possess such information. What if they do, erase their memories? That's beyond censorship!

I am a META employee, and I know for a fact that several corporations are working closely with the United States government.

The U.S. is not a safe jurisdiction.

We're not just targeting criminals or terrorists — we're targeting people. Everyday people. People like YOU — who choose to use a Fediverse site instead of one owned by an American corporation. YOU — who dare to think twice about your privacy and security.

And we're doing this while cracking down on everyone — even celebrities — who speak negatively about Charlie Kirk.

Wake up! You're standing in the fire, and it's time to get out of the building.

is a genius. The more the government paints over the mural depicting a protester being brutally silenced by a judge, the more poignant its message becomes.

Absolute artistic masterpiece.

The graffiti after it has been scrubbed. The outline of the original artwork remains clearly visible as a gray shadow on the wall.
