I've been thinking a lot about and how to make it easy for people to find and join the

Here's some ultra-low-effort drawings of the process I'm imagining. (criticism and refinements welcome)

  1. embeddable widgets (follow, like, share, etc) for any site

  2. pre-populate search fields to recommend a single server (with overrides)

  3. pass extra data to that server on signup so the intent is honored

  4. recommend additional accounts based on context

Yes?

If there's interest, I'm happy to write up the rest of this as an additional

Your Home Feed is the inbox of an ActivityPub actor — in particular YOUR ActivityPub actor.

There could be an actor for each hash-tag, too.

You could even do Del.icio.us like things — and have actors for intersections of hash-tags, too.

These hash-tag actors' inboxes would need to be readable by anyone.

...

This could be a more ActivityPub like API alternative to Mastodon's "GET /API/v1/tags/{name}" API.

FEP drafting: Am I using “side effects” here the same way as other ActivityPub developers? I've seen the term used a bunch in casual conversation, but my personal understanding of it is kinda fuzzy.

I dream of being able to store my online social presence, identity, and history just as — an (organized) set of static files.

A set that I control.

And, I can (if I want to) host myself. (I.e., I am the "source of truth" / "origin" for my files.)

The Mastodon team is planning to release a universal "share" button.

(It wasn't clear to me if this was just for Mastodon servers — or if it would work with non-Mastodon servers, too. It was mentioned briefly from the audience.)

Speaker on stage in the Social Web room at FOSDEM 2026 is arguing for open-source Fediverse projects to do product-development.

Although he is framing it in terms of building for a community.

I agree with him. Although, I think it is true of open-source projects in general.

(For completeness — others have said that, too.)

Day 2 in Brussels (for this trip). I think I have adjusted enough to the time-zone change that I will be (mostly) awake for FOSDEM 2026 — which takes place this weekend.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the first day of FOSDEM 2026. I will be attending the Social Web track.

Fediverse & AI Coding Tools & Vibe Coding

...

I noticed 2 or 3 people lately using AI coding tools to create Fediverse software.

2 of them even seemed to be Vibe Coding.

...

I have been programming for over 30 years. I am probably not going to Vibe Code, but —

I wonder if we should help them.

There are tools we (Fediverse developers) could create to make it so others could Vibe Code Fediverse apps.

Cryptographic public-keys are one way that one can have an identity (on the Fediverse, and elsewhere) while also having privacy — through a pseudonymous identity.

Yes, we have Fediverse IDs such as:

@joeblow@example.com

But a (non-delegated) public-key can function as a PORTABLE form of identity on the Fediverse.

One person's request for Fediverse applications —

Alex wants to be able to choose what the preview image is for a video, chosen from the frames in the video.

...

I can imagine editing tools (in Fediverse applications) would also be useful.

It is also common elsewhere for people to be able to use custom images for preview images.

This is an area I think we could improve on the Fediverse —

Nested Comments

This (in the attached screen-shot) is from someone on Twitter who is also on Mastodon and Bluesky.

He seems to be a fan of the nested comments UI on Bluesky.

We have some great applications on the Fediverse. They could be made even greater with this improvement.

I forgot how tedious it is to chase code coverage when writing tests.

However this was part of the reason that made me include the "boring" parts of building a robust library into the goals set for the grant.

So after a couple of days of work I finally got the first of the storage backends for the library go past 80% test coverage.

I hope I can reuse some of the test logic in the other backends, as they need to perform identically.

I have added Mastodon-style (FEP-044f) quote post compatibility to my @DailyRucks bot. You can now quote post the daily voice lines as much as you want! 🥳

This would be noteworthy on its own if there weren't already a bunch of non-Mastodon implementations, but I'm actually late to the party. WordPress, Bonfire, micro.blog, dotmakeup, and ActivityBot all got there before I did.

However, I think my approach is novel for being stateless. Thread incoming.
