In this #interview from our #Energy and #Climate blog, Axel and I talk to German professor #ChristopherHebling, who, as Director of International Affairs at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, has been elected to the board of the Forum for Future Energies e.V.
If I may briefly address the points you raised. Hydrogen is...
“Too energy-inefficient and too expensive”: That is not correct. “This results in a loss of around 26 percent when 53 kilowatt hours of electricity are needed to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. The efficiency of electrolysis is therefore currently around 74 percent.”
“A gas that escapes and contributes to the greenhouse effect”: This is also incorrect, as hydrogen does not escape but is converted into climate-neutral water in fuel cells or combustion engines and has no direct impact on the greenhouse effect overall.
“A type of clean fuel” that provides a lifeline for the oil industry: On the contrary, the oil industry is currently switching to hydrogen production, as oil-producing countries are aware that crude oil will no longer be available in the near future.
The fact that “hydrogen filling stations in the USA have already been closed” is more likely due to the new backward-looking government.
