Co-developed by Fuji Electric, the machines don’t need access to a power outlet and instead rely on replaceable hydrogen cartridges to fuel a chemical reaction that generates electricity, @theverge reports:

The Well to Wheel efficiency of Hydrogen is circa 30%, some 70% of input energy being wasted in the process of converting it to Hydrogen, transporting it, and re-converting it to electricity. (https://sci-hub.st/https://doi.org/10.1051/rees/2016033)

Hydrogen advocates say "so what, at least that 30% will be there as long as you need it, unlike batteries which self-discharge".

So, let's ignore for a second that the smallest molecule in nature is inherently leaky, and focus on the self discharge...

The Round trip efficiency of a Lithium battery with no self discharge is circa 80%, so only some 20% energy is wasted in the process of storing and recovering it.

Self discharge rates for Lithium Ion batteries are circa 5% per month.

So, unless you're planning on storing some energy for > 19 months you're better off using batteries.
