I manage a handful of small websites and have recently switched from Windows to Mint. I was using PortableApps to keep the sites separated, and for the moment want to do the same. I’ve set up VirtualBox with a cut down Windows 10 installation, and added the root folder of the websites as a shared folder, so Websites/Site1, Websites/Site2 etc. The root folder is still on an NTFS drive.

I think i understand adding a link to /etc/apt/sources.list so apt knows to check there for packages. What i don’t understand is how to find those links.

I have been looking for doctors, saving numbers, emails and working hours in a onlyoffice spreadsheet but its not really readable at a glance. Looked around for an address books app but neither gnome calendar nor Thunderbird meet my needs.

Been using Linux off and on for years. Back when Windows 10 got EOL’d, I decided to go all in. I’m one of those weirdos who doesn’t like Mint/Cinnamon, so I went with MX 23 + Plasma.

In the recent days I’ve been stumbling upon weird, new so-called “AI" Mathy-math-slop sites, like linuxv*x.com1. Some other was called something like “tutorialsipedia”, or whatever.

Of the desktop environments i’ve tried, i prefer Cinnamon overall. But i find that i’d rather use the KDE or Mate versions of some programs. I don’t need Nemo when i’d rather use Thunar, or Gnome Characters when i prefer mate-character-map or kcharselect.

I tried flatpak repair, with –user and –system, that did not fix it, and I did a system re-install, or rather reinstalled all the packages Nothing worked.

I often need to allow some randomly selected port to be open (tcp & udp) in the Uncomplicated Firewall (UFW), while some app is active. Then I’d like to close it. The port number is written in a file, say portfile

Curious on suggestions for airtags, or similar, for tracking important things on flights or other cases where losing the specific item would be too much of a financial / sentimental loss. Anyone doing this from Linux, or from graphene? How is it?

Looking for a link archiving tool to save links that i have no intention of viewing anytime soon. it needs to be able to sort bookmarks by folders and sub-folders, tags are just not my thing. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy but it needs to be offline first and have the ability to export bookmarks in a readable format

Do they have to be installed in the default .wine folder and c:\? I’d prefer to install big games using wine on another drive if possible as space is linited on my home drive.

I have used Arch for >13 years (btw) and use the terminal every single session. I also work with Linux servers daily, so I tried the other families with DEs (Debian/Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS/AlmaLinux/Fedora).

This was talked about before, but the settings location that was mentioned to enable thumbnails on remote files and stuff has changed. I have a mount of my android system over mtp, and I cannot see any of the thumbnails, making it impossible for me to sort my stuff, some into hard drives and etc.

Hello! I have been using Fedora Silverblue for over a year now with few to no major issues. Today, however, I started experiencing an odd issue. Whenever I connect a set of Bluetooth headphones and switch the audio output channel, GNOME will completely crash. I get logged out, and the crashes repeat every few seconds until I disconnect the headphones or manage to shutdown the device. After logging in, all apps get killed, and even GNOME extensions get disabled (likely as a panic measure). The headphones were working perfectly prior to today.

I’m wondering what XMPP clients people use and what they like about each particular one.

Every atp command returns an avalanche of errors, I freed up some space but the package management stuff seems gone and I can’t seem to fix it. Should I fresh install?

I have 2 physical output devices, say “speakers” and “headphones”, and I frequently switch between them.

running the stuff in the title, tried a buncha switches for chromium/electron stuff but still the load mesured with e.g. amdgpu_top doesn’t show “Media” usage. playing other stuff (VLC, Dragon, mpv) shows “Media” usage, which means those are using hardware acceleration.

I have come into possession of an oled monitor due to a friend giving it to me, however updating its firmware has become a nightmare. It doesnt seem possible to update it without windows. Windows PE live discs do not work at all either. I’ve tried wine and a vm, neither worked.

Hey guys! I just wanted to share a proof of concept real quick. No hate at all to GIMP or Pinta, but I just really love Paint.net as I’ve been using it for over a decade. And since I completely switched over to Arch a year ago, that means the only way I can enjoy using Paint.net again is if I add all the missing Direct 2D implementations. How hard could it be? 😅

Thought I’d create a distinct thread from the previous one asking about daily use, because I really do want to hear more on people’s pain points. Great to know people are generally sounding pretty positive in those posts who recently switched, but want to know your difficulties as well! This way old and new users can share their thoughts, hopefully to inspire a respectful discussion.

Curious on the experiences of those recently migrating to Linux from Windows 10, Intel-based MacOS, etc. How is it being on Linux? Anything surprise or frustrate you?

I’m on board that we need to become independent from big tech. As someone who is fond of the Mac user experience, from choosing hardware to how you navigate through apps, I need a guide to make the switch, so if you know of any great guides for Mac users, I’d greatly appreciate it!

The law firm that I work for is has finally decided that we should embrace Linux.

I have a friend coming for a visit in a few months, early spring, who is legally blind, I believe less than 2% vision in one eye and none in the other. I want to hand him a laptop with kubuntu on it to use while here for web browsing (Firefox) and streaming (OBS/Stream yard). He does not read braille.

It used to work on Fedora out-of-the-box, but when I installed ProtonVPN on Debian I couldn’t get it to minimize to the waybar tray.

So, yeah, basically the title …

This is not meant for novice users. This is for those who (1) really like sandboxed apps, (2) like to tweak the permissions of their apps, and (3) are comfortable using the command line.

Anyone know a fix for this screen size. I’ve downloaded wine and so, and tried different settings in the GTA manager but nothing helped.. Picture is not getting attached but should show an screen where only the gameplay is shown in a little screen on my laptop..

I’m trying to figure out primary distro for framework 16. Currently using fedora for about year. I’ve package installation automated through ansible so technically using new distro is not big hassle still want to see if there is any other way of easily distro-hoping on bare metal.

I have a rig running frigate that runs all the cameras for a local business. The openvino detectors are suddenly acting up and I’m not sure why just yet. They are slow, even when there’s nothing to figure out. They just seem busy all the fucking time.

Does anyone know of any good, reasonably fast software to scan through a load of video files. Hours/weeks of footage to sift out any motion detected reasonably quickly. Preferably with a GUI.
