Board Position Descriptions
President
The President is the chair of the board, working alongside with all other board members. The President holds fiduciary powers and is able to sign on behalf of DiscNY. They supervise all DiscNY activities and are expected to be knowledgeable about the ongoings of the organization. They attend every board meeting and are encouraged to attend other key planning sessions or committee meetings). They are familiar with all key activities of the organization; though they are not expected to run those programs themselves. Like other board members, the President jumps in to help with needed tasks - they care about DiscNY and work hard to ensure any program the organization runs is successful. The President guides DiscNY's long-term projects and vision, and willing to serve as a stop-gap volunteer when need be. They are an active member of the community and want to make sure DiscNY is a welcoming and thriving organization for anyone interested.
Secretary
The Secretary shares the same duties and rights as all other board members - attends board meetings, is a full voting member, and helps guide direction of the org. Additionally they are responsible for sharing a space for folks to add to the monthly board meeting's agenda, and help to keep the meeting on track based on agenda topics. They are also responsible for making sure minutes are taken including clarifying decisions that are reached and tagging folks who have actionable items. The Ops director helps with these tasks as well if delegated ahead of time. The most important thing is making sure information is recorded and organized, there's a current operating file structure for the org and future projects should be considered surrounding actively sharing meeting minutes with the public, etc.
Treasurer
The Treasurer maintains DiscNY’s accounting records and is one of the three officers of the Board. They keep track of the organization’s financial stability and provide financial statements to the board during board meetings. The Treasurer assists the organization in making decisions about available funds for large-scale projects such as hiring new employees. They review expenses, invoice vendors, and reimburse community members as needed. The Treasurer should create a yearly budget for DiscNY, for the board to consider and approve.
The current board utilizes a part time bookkeeper named RJ Marchesi that works closely with the treasurer to help streamline the financial aspects of this role.
At-Large
The At-Large position is best classified as a member of the board whose responsibilities are shaped as soon as they join. They do not fit into the responsibilities as the above but bring their unique strengths, passions, and drives to best suit the growing needs of the board. This could include bringing concerns and asks from the community to the board, taking on organization of leagues/events/tournaments, helping drive missions and visions of the board, and much more. At-Large members have been involved as volunteers, players, and coaches beyond holding their board positions. The position is what one makes of it; it requires dedication and a desire to improve DiscNY but can take many different forms.
