Im convinced this and the similar age “verification” for Roblox using face pictures is just to help train AI on faces and has little to do with any of the safety bullshit.

Even if the image isnt saved, they can still presumably add it to training data during the verification process before tossing the file. This is pretty standard course for most image processing AI stuff.

As far as I’m aware the discord mobile version doesn’t upload the video. It’s all done locally on the device and then what’s sent to discord is either “yes they are an adult” or an estimated age figure (could be either).

On-device processing: Video selfies for facial age estimation never leave a user’s device.

Of course they could be lying, but sending a video from the device should be quite easy for anyone to prove they’re lying no?

For now. A year or two down the road the terms of service get updated and now they do collect the video. It’s just habituating the public to let go of any expectation of privacy.

I kinda figured they didn’t really need the media itself. Im assuming this all needs some AI shit to work (how else is it realistically going to judge age?), so even if it processes it locally, it can still send some LLM abstracted form of the media back and not technically be lying.

A human wouldn’t be able to reconstruct it into the video again, but ChatGPT will start having dreams about Roblox kids and Discord gooners faces.

Crazy how they spin the narrative of protecting young people, meanwhile the Epstein class has been abusing the youth for decades. Everyone knew according to Cindy McCain. Joke World, eat the rich asap obvsly, capital is completely insane.

I don’t know how most people use discord nowadays, but in my country it seems that whenever I see it being mentioned in the news it’s because a group of teenagers did some horrible shit in a discord group and got arrested (or whatever it is the police do to teens, particularly of the affluent type). It’s no longer an app for chatting while gaming, but it’s very much connected to that piece of shit chud gamer 4chan-adjacent type of rhetoric.

    CW: Nasty discord shit

Seriously, we’re talking about people sharing Nazi shit, violent content, as well as CSAM these teenage boys made of the girls they bullied into taking nude selfies and then harming themselves. We’re talking about kids doing “challenges” where they bully other kids their age or younger into killing their pets. It’s really horrendous.

So good riddance, I guess, but I don’t mean that as an endorsement to encroaching on online privacy. All I mean is that, while I am opposed to this type of ID requirement… in this instance, nothing of value seems to be lost.

However, some users may not have to go through either form of age verification. Discord is also rolling out an age inference model that analyzes metadata like the types of games a user plays, their activity on Discord, and behavioral signals like signs of working hours or the amount of time they spend on Discord.

“If we have a high confidence that they are an adult, they will not have to go through the other age verification flows,”

Motherfuckers ran their comms on DISCORD 😭😭😭😭

The IWW has a minusule amount of money and resources by comparison but we at least have IT infrastructure. UTAW is a tech workers union and the best they could do was a discord server ffs.

I am. Have had fewer videochat problems than I did with Matrix/Element, but I’ve only been on it a few months. I’m pleased with it so far.
