    The album’s lyrics, written by Yorke, are more abstract compared to his personal, emotional lyrics for The Bends. Critic Alex Ross said the lyrics “seemed a mixture of overheard conversations, techno-speak, and fragments of a harsh diary” with “images of riot police at political rallies, anguished lives in tidy suburbs, yuppies freaking out, sympathetic aliens gliding overhead.” Recurring themes include transport, technology, insanity, death, modern British life, globalisation and anti-capitalism. Yorke said: “On this album, the outside world became all there was … I’m just taking Polaroids of things around me moving too fast.” He told Q: “It was like there’s a secret camera in a room and it’s watching the character who walks in—a different character for each song. The camera’s not quite me. It’s neutral, emotionless. But not emotionless at all. In fact, the very opposite.” Yorke also drew inspiration from books, including Noam Chomsky’s political writing, Eric Hobsbawm’s The Age of Extremes, Will Hutton’s The State We’re In, Jonathan Coe’s What a Carve Up! and Philip K. Dick’s VALIS.

    someone who rants about one thing being significantly worse than another, but provides examples of the two things that are basically indistinguishable from one another.

    That’s not what a snob is. I just posted links to the pictures so you can see for yourself. It definitely isn’t indistinguishable, especially if you look at Tom Arnold’s face. It’s quite the opposite actually and if calling out weird AI smoothing is being a snob than it seems a large portion of people are.

    King Crimson - The band that pretty much started progressive rock and still the best - In The Court Of The Crimson King, Larks Tongues In Aspic and Red are essential listens.

    Genesis - a band of two eras, both pretty good. The Peter Gabriel era has some of the best songs in the prog cannon with Selling England By The Pound, Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway being essential listens. The Phil Collins era merged the catchiness of pop music with the complicated compositions of prog with essential listenings being A Trick Of The Tail, Wind And Wuthering, Abacab and the self titled. If you like live stuff than Genesis Live and Seconds Out are great listens.

    Yes - Maybe the most beloved prog band due to writing catchy songs without compromising their progness - The Yes Album, Close To The Edge and Fragile are essential listens.

    Gentle Giant - One of the strangest of the prog bands with unique vocal harmonies and compositions inspired by medieval music. Octopus and Free Hand are essential listens.

    Emerson, Lake And Palmer - a band synonymous with arena prog, they were easily the biggest prog band during the genre’s peak in the 70s. Essential listens are Brain Salad Surgery, Pictures At An Exhibition and the first album, which is self titled.

    I reject that hypothesis. If it was an oppressed people being othered than it would make sense and the criticism would work, but we’re talking about fascists. Again right wing movie “analysts” like Rob Ager pushes this stuff. Ager has a video called “Killing Private Kraut” that is solely dedicated to pushing this “theory”.
