Trump is just the symptom, he is not the disease.

When he leaves office (by hook or by crook) the disease will remain; they have purchased replacements already.

We had them. USA used to bust up companies and revoke business licenses with regularity

Unfortunately, we also had “campaign donations” and then we had “corporations are people” and “money is free speech” and after 60 years here we are.

Our political system can’t be fixed by laws at this point, those receiving all of those “donations” will not willingly legislate their wealth away. Look at them. Pelosi has never turned down a check in her life. McConnell got rich for over FORTY YEARS. and so on

That’s a long list of companies I’m not going to fuck with anymore. They can produce whatever they want, doesn’t mean we have to consume it.

We are absolutely NOT obligated to consume ANY of that corporatist shit.

Best thing I did was get rid of my TV when I cut the cable back in 1999.

My current TV is a 50" budget “special needs” 4k Hisense I use for gaming. That’s it.

          The slop is INSANE!

I’ve been “Do not recommend channel”-ing my youtube feed for the last few weeks., it went off the rails when my brother sent me a link to some “HFY” sci-fi short story.

I had no idea those were all AI content and once I watched part of one… holy cats, that was it.

Say goodbye to my carefully curated home page.

          FUUUUCCK!

Consuming it, but not paying them anything for it, is also an option, but I certainly respect avoiding it altogether out of principle.

We really dont talk enough about how Trump and the modern right was made possible by 90s politicians. Those dumbass “new democrats” who basically decided to be Reagan Lite and the Republicans who happily turned the wheel even further right in response.

The American “Left” calls it “Lesser Evil” while screeching “Vote blue no matter who” on TikToks and Youtubes to a braindead audience.

We’ve heard Trump “fighting” for peace during the election campaign, and now his circle of friends has free reign to murder and bomb at will. We’ve seen Bernie and Hillary denying the genocide in Gaza while the genocide was happening in front of our eyes. They are all grifters. They come out of their holes when their respective party needs promotion and donation money for another election that won’t change shit.

Meanwhile their MAGA and “vote blue no matter who” underlings slide further right without noticing…

Financial obesity is an existential threat to any society that tolerates it, and needs to cease being celebrated, rewarded, and positioned as an aspirational goal.

Corporations are the only ‘persons’ which should be subjected to capital punishment, but billionaires should be euthanised through taxation.

Unfortunately, the US education system teaches that everything is compartmentalized and not interconnected to other actions by government. A cut here, a clip there, before we know it, the entire tree has been taken down.

Have you not noticed the global rise of fascism fueled by billionaire owned media companies controlling the narrative?

Over here in Europe, it’s extremely obvious. Everything a left-wing party does is scrutinized, every new right-wing scandal is barely worth mentioning.

Lemmy is just a left-wing bubble. Lots of people watch TV and simply believe most things they see.

And which of the listed companies did that come from?

None of them. It came from fox news and right wing YouTube. And it’s a minority that’s shrinking and increasingly isolated from everyone else, who are all growing more and more disdainful of the right.

Murdoch owned media, then. Pardon me for focusing on America in the comments of a post by an American senator about an American billionaire family buying up mostly American media networks and largely failing to influence wider American culture with them.

And Murdoch owns none of the state-run or private channels that are the main source of news in all the major EU economies at the very least.

They also are often used as performance pieces. A politician introducing a bill that is doomed to failure is not helpful, nor does it accomplish anything.

“Oh but it’s important that they introduce them so that when congressmen vote no we have a record and-”

Shut. The. Fuck. Up. If I have to hear the “important to have a record” argument again I’m gonna scream. It is not important to have a record because the record doesn’t mean shit. We’ve had records going back decades, it doesn’t sway people in any meaningful way and it’s foolish to pretend it does.

True. That would also mean a politician in DC would have to introduce something instead of just posting on social media, or maybe getting on tv for 12 seconds to say how had something is. Which they then proceed to open their bank account to check the balance.
