Are we ignoring the horse that’s using the bow in the background?
Given their other achievements in horsemanship, I’m not convinced the Mongols couldn’t train them to climb ladders.
Harder to get the horses over, though
The wall was to stop horses of The Golden Horde
Yeah, the comic could really use a fourth panel showing just how absurd it is for war horses to climb ladders.
The ‘wall’ was constructed centuries prior to the Golden Horde, which existed in western asia and did not threaten China. There were centuries of construction and maintenance but most of the prominent portions of the system was built/upgraded after the Mongols by the Ming, who overthrew the Yuan dynasty, (which were the Mongols).
The one battle the Mongols fought at the wall they just went through the open gate. In one instance they just paid the guards.
Big ramp
the chinese wall isn’t to keep invaders out but to not let them escape once they’re in, so your army can chase and slaughter them more easily. that threat is probably more significant than them not getting in in the first place.
basically the invaders were often horse-riders, and as such speed was their primary strength. if you build walls, you slow them down, and therefore take their biggest advantage away.
A hacker quote that’s stuck with me is that physical security only exists to slow down intruders so they can be caught.
Generally this means, before they get in… but it does also work when trying to rout some milk-drunk cavalry.
JUST USE A LADDER
Well go get one and show us simpleminded idiots how it’s done, then. Otherwise, put your head in the guillotine.
Cavaladdery.
