Iām here from Reddit⦠Gimme hugs!
Another reddit refugee here and this is my first ever comment on Lemmy.ml (or any of the Lemmy instances, for that matter). Welcome!
Weāll explore this weird new world t together!
And another one here. Let reddit burn to the ground with their own VC greed.
Exciting time for us!
Noooo we canāt give any more!!
Awww⦠Mean.
Sending reinforcements
Yāall gonna feel wholesome today
Same here, feels interesting but good!
Weāll see⦠š¤

Created my own instance to help out. Created a few communities, hopefully theyāll become searchable from the big instances soon.
In the future, thereās nothing that says you or anyone else canāt create accounts on a few of the large instances and subscribe to communities on your own instance to make this link happen!
Put some links to your communities, Iāll sub to start the link
Iāve made three so far -
https://1337lemmy.com/c/thesopranos
https://1337lemmy.com/c/chicubs
https://1337lemmy.com/c/chibears
The link has finally been made, so no need to sub unless youād like to. Thanks for offering!
Thank you for your service.
Someone has to search for the full address and then follow a community for it to be followed by a server.
It would make a great stress test though when suddenly millions join Lemmy :)
Reddit chose a very bad time to mess up, right when weāre in the middle of coding some of our biggest performance improvements. They timed this perfectly to make things as stressful as possible for nutomic and I lol.
Great work and good luck!!!
Iāve been busy too recently and I just noticed yesterday the influx of new users⦠So Iāve updated and upgraded the server a bit. Hopefully I can keep my instance running smoothly and contribute a little bit that way!
The ones that really want to get in, would wait a long time i guess, like i certainly would! The only reason i am not here months ago, is because i did not know this place existed
Wellā¦I hear good things about Ritalin. Good luck, and godspeed lol
I am so not jealous. Just know that we appreciate all your hard work.
Depending on how bad the perf is, it may be worth it throwing the instance on a real big machine to take the load to buy time for the optimization work without turning many users away. Contributions should increase with the flood of users. If a big machine could mask the problems of course. Maybe theyāre too bad to mask. You probably know.
Ya⦠our server upgrade was a short-term fix, but our code efforts in the past week, especially with regard to the SQL and websockets, should help things.
Your efforts are appreciated!

Has there been any work / planning around an ability for third parties to setup broadcast servers to help distribute the load? I know that kind of thing is extremely difficult but maybe it would be a reasonable effort for handling read only requests. I havenāt had a chance to look into lemmyās architecture yet so not sure if this is a valid question or not :)
Not that I know of.
I just discovered kbin which looks very nice. Do you plan to share the like/dislike feature with them so that accounts can be cross-used?
You might need to open up an issue on the github if likes arenāt federating with it.
No stress test needed, every admin has already said they know itās going down

Well shet
Itāll be good practice for when a bunch of third party apps die and some post about āhow to go about delete your stuff and registering on this list of alternatives in just a few easy stepsā comes up.
And by practice, I mean that the horse corpse is going to be fucking pulverized.
My first plan was to delete my content the first of July if reddit didnāt change mind, but Iāll delete it before because I want to use a third party app to do so without too much hustle
And after the 1st of July too, probably
Definitely not. Before people were migrating from Twitter only just to go back
Donāt know. The thing with Mastodon is that you wouldnāt find people to follow and it lacked features people wanted.
Lemmy here is way more entertaining already. Of course a lot of people will just check it out and go back but I think enough will stick around. Like a small subreddit you enjoy and slowly grows.
Letās hope so! I wish for a slow but steady growth.
I fear that we wont be so lucky. If a million people try to check out Lemmy at once, all the instances can go down.
Mine will be fine. I splashed out and got a VPS with one whole CPU core!
Part of the problem is that when a new user starts exploring Lemmy, they see the list of āmost popular instancesā and are inclined to gravitate towards them, when itās really not necessary to join them to interact with them⦠As a recent Reddit refugee, that was what I struggled with the most.
Honestly I joined lemmy.ml because it had the description that most closely matched my interests without feeling like Iām joining one single personās home lab experiment. I think we would need a few more large general purpose (vanilla) instances.
On the other hand I wonder if it doesnāt make more sense to condense communities/topics into single, topic-specialized servers. I canāt imagine, from a UI perspective subscribing to 100 different news communities and another 100 gaming communities and⦠I feel like the current UI just isnāt designed with this in mind.
I feel some of the regional instances are the best. I.e. Iām on lemmy.ca but can clearly read and post to the other instances. That way the load can be somewhat split on geography⦠likely better speeds as well.
Itād definitely be neat if there was a way to group those similar communities into single, shared communities between federated instances. Like, if 6 different instances have āGamingā communities, to have them all effectively grouped into a single one, and also include the āGamingā communities from any other instances that you federate with in the future.
I think the ideal UX would be to be able to see one āGamingā community, subscribe to it, and check a box for āInclude Similar Federated Communitiesā or something, and have posts from all of them show up in your feed, without having to individually subscribe to them.
Contributions welcome: https://github.com/LemmyNet/joinlemmy-site
Perhaps instances should be promoted according to current and predicted capacity.
Thatād be great. Or even show a list of communities, rather than instances, and let the user find some communities that interest them first, then gravitate towards an instance from there (though that might not solve the problem if the most popular communities are from the most popular instances.)
Could even promote smaller instances that are federated with the popular instances, instead of promoting the popular instances directly.
What we need is a big disclaimer text with a step by step and requests for choosing from less populated servers.
That text needs to be present at every single point of the user journey, not just once.
I tried like 4 or 5 instanced before settling on lemmy.ml a few days ago because none of them had admissions open.
True, Iāve seen larger websites go down due to Redditās āhug of deathā. I imagine that even the limited blackout will take down the more popular instances.

Honestly, I just donāt get twitter and never joined. I also donāt super get mastadon. I see people talking about having great conversations, but it seems like the WORST interface for that (fedilab on android anyway). Itās a good ārss aggregatorā with comments, but the 500 character limit is still tiny for most comments Iād ever want to make, and the threading / comments are quite limited. At least on lemmy, if thereās a post people are replying to - you can see the replies, youāre not linked randomly half way through a thread, and you can type a longer comment. I just think Iām way more reddit acclimated, and actually I āgrew upā with Slashdot soā¦

I could never wrap my head around the discoverability and reach issues ā I havenāt had any problems with either of those, and Iām running a solo server (though Iāve come to suspect that there was maybe a jargon and expectation barrier, and they just couldnāt overcome the different layout).
What I can understand is running away from the somewhat, uh, hostile welcome many of them got. Instead of bringing people in and helping them acclimate, a bunch of folks just got up in new peoplesā faces and gave them no room to make faux pas.
I donāt see that happening here. The crowd thatās showed up over the last week or so has been made up of core Reddit folks, and the atmosphere is very Reddit in nature.
Itās just the volume of content that is missing, and that already feels like itās inching toward critical mass and can become self-sustaining.

Hmm. Unfortunate.
I think that just means we need moar bodies.

People go to twitter to see what famous people and influencers have to say.
People to go Reddit for the consolidated forums while also being able to browse a bunch of other entertainment and memes all in one shot. Or at least I do. The breadth of offerings of Reddit is a selling point.
reddit has so many users that basically all interests are covered. I can look up an discussion thread on relatively obscure anime/manga that came out 8 years ago. Thatās hard to compete with and why I wonāt be quitting reddit entirely.
Yup, Iāve ended up having better luck searching for a product with āsite:reddit.comā as well. Itās also been the home for memes for quite some time. Even when I donāt feel like delving into discussions on things, itās still the best / easiest place to scroll silly pictures and laugh for a bit when Iām lifting at the gym and between sets.
I wonāt be quitting though Iāll be trying to dwindle my use a bit. Iām not much of a doom scroller but I will run through a list of subreddits on a regular basis.

Its also possible that Reddit rows back from the API change (at least temporarily). I hope they do, so that we have a bit more time to get Lemmy ready.
On one hand, I think this is the best opportunity for lemmy to grow exponentially in terms of reddit immigrants. It would be great to take advantage of this since if many users from reddit have a good experience with lemmy itās free word of mouth advertising over at reddit. Plus Iām not sure reddit will do something like this again in the foreseeable future after their IPO comes out.
On the other hand, I completely understand that there are technical challenges that need to be addressed, and a user thatās trying lemmy out for the first time would probably get turned off if it seems like lenny is unstable and/or thereās not much content to engage him/her.
Id love for lenny to evolve and grow. Iāve only been here ~48 hours but Iām already less stressed and the community so far has been good to me. Iāll still promote lenny even after this API issue until they ban me. Lol.
Why did I hear Ralphās voice inside my head?
No one will come; you canāt use RIF here, either.
(ha ha)
Someone at RIF must be thinking about adding support for Lemmy.
E: Or jump to Jerboa. Looks a bit early in development but itās surprisingly functional.
Iāve been part of Ruqqus & Imzy, I hope that this time it will be a success! (hopium overdose)
I miss Imzy, that was such a wholesome site :)
I miss imzy tooo =(
