Causation

This paper develops the Argument from Operative Transition, beginning from the reality of genuine operation: directed occurrences in which something contributes source-side efficacy to an actual result. It asks whether the complete actuality of a connected derivative order can be constituted entirely by sources whose efficacy is activated, transmitted, state-conditioned, received, or merely instrumental. The argument does not assume a beginning of time, universal determinism, the well-foundedness of every dependence relation, or a universal Principle of Sufficient Reason. -/- Its central (...) distinction is between principal and instrumental contribution. Mediation may transmit, transform, or specify operative actuality, but cannot, merely as mediation, constitute principal possession of that actuality. Infinite, circular, distributed, and holistic structures are therefore permitted, yet each must contain principal operative actuality or possess it irreducibly as a whole. From this the paper derives an integrated, source-complete ground whose foundational actuality is non-received and invariant. -/- The modal stage distinguishes necessary ground-role occupancy, de re essentiality, and transworld numerical identity. The personal stage is conditional upon genuine contingency and contrastive completeness: fixed production yields necessity, content-indifferent non-fixation yields chance, while source-owned, content-guided settlement yields minimal intellective possession and volitional authorship. Causation is grounded in explanation; or so I argue here. According to the view which I propose, the fact that event c causes event e is grounded in two facts: the occurrence of c explains the occurrence of e, and c and e are wholly distinct. After formulating and explicating this view, I give three arguments for it. The first is based on a complete reduction of one relation to another which this view affords. The second is based on plausible (...) claims about causal facts being identical to certain sorts of conjunctions. This paper synthesizes two predecessor documents — The Chain Completed (July 2026) and A5 at Population Scale (June 2026) — into a single argument that runs without gap from the October 2022 semiconductor export controls to three conditional political outcomes, and corrects a logical deficiency the predecessor chain left in its fifth link. The prior chain's five links were: chokepoint restriction originates in October 2022 semiconductor controls, not the June 2026 model directive; the chokepoint generalizes unevenly across the compute stack; (...) ALRP's hard floor at biological response time marks the point beyond which no upstream restriction reaches; Frontier Rotation — the Generative Paradox applied to states — predicts that a second state reaching the AI frontier relocates rather than dissolves the enclosure; and Frontier Rotation accelerates the Attribution stage of the Grief–Attribution–Legitimation–Concentration sequence by removing a diffusing explanation. The fifth link was correctly identified but incompletely specified: removing a diffusing explanation is not sufficient to constitute Attribution, which requires a specific, nameable defendant rather than merely the absence of a rescue narrative. -/- This paper corrects that gap using two independent literatures. Fuller's (2022) reformulation of Rose's population epidemiology establishes that Claim 2 of the A5 framework — the incidence claim, governing when A5's standing charge converts into organized political force — requires a temporal contrastive question: why is A5 converting now, in this population, rather than not converting, as it did not for most of recorded history in the same population? Frontier Rotation answers the temporal component of that contrast (why now: the rescue narrative is permanently foreclosed, not merely delayed). The Biological Zero-Day Mechanism's discreteness property answers the defendant component (who: a specific coverage decision, at a specific date, authored by a specific institution). Together, and not separately, these two already-established mechanisms jointly constitute Attribution in Fuller's technically correct sense, closing the prior gap without introducing new premises. -/- The sixth link — Concentration is not sufficient to determine outcome — stands from the predecessor paper, grounded in Skocpol's (1979) comparative-revolutionary analysis. This paper adds the causal architecture the predecessor's fifth link lacked: Millstein's (2006, 2013) population-level causal production criterion, applied to Legitimation-density; Hoel, Albantakis, and Tononi's (2013) formal causal emergence measure, applied to Concentration; and Santos's (2023) account of downward causation, applied to explain why the Governance Paradox is structurally stable — not merely psychologically stable — under population-level legitimation dynamics no individual governance actor can exit by disclosure or recusal alone. The complete chain runs from a 2022 export license to a conditional political outcome, with every link specified, every gap named and addressed, and every branch stated at the precision the evidence supports. This paper demonstrates, from an epistemological standpoint, the structural isomorphism between Quxiang Bilei—the classical Chinese cognitive method of image abstraction and analogical reasoning, literally "taking phenomena to form analogies and categorical associations"—and Bayesian inference. By systematically mapping the three components of Bayes's theorem—prior probability, likelihood function, and posterior probability—onto the three constitutive stages of Quxiang Bilei: image-taking, analogy-making, and verification, this paper reveals that Bayesian inference is not merely a specialized technical toolset, but rather the mathematical formalization of the metacognitive (...) structure inherent in Quxiang Bilei. -/- Building upon this isomorphic framework, the paper advances five core philosophical propositions: (1) objectivity is the statistical convergence outcome of collective Bayesian updating across epistemic communities; (2) causal laws represent the limiting case in which posterior probability infinitely approaches unity; (3) the interpretability of probabilistic calculations resides not within mathematics itself, but in its correspondence with underlying metacognitive structures; (4) the absolute boundary of artificial intelligence lies not in insufficient computational power, but in its lack of embodied physical anchoring and authentic survival feedback; and (5) there exists a fundamental, non-accidental isomorphism between Quxiang Bilei and Bayesian inference. -/- These five propositions are not mere mutual projections between two disparate conceptual frameworks, but genuinely novel insights emerging from their productive dialogue and critical engagement. WHAT THIS PAPER ARGUES. The Molecular Zero-Day used Rose and Novas's biological citizenship to explain why ACT UP succeeded where eight other historical cases in this corpus's record did not, without citing the ethnographic study that gave the concept its empirical substance and, on the field's own account, its originating case. Adriana Petryna's Life Exposed: Biological Citizens after Chernobyl (2002) documents what happened when a population exposed to a discrete, dated, catastrophic event — the April 1986 reactor explosion — sought (...) recognition and compensation from a collapsing state, and found that citizenship claims had to be routed through proof of biological damage, adjudicated by medical commissions attempting dose reconstruction: the scientific reconstruction, often decades after exposure, of an individual radiation dose sufficiently precise to support or deny a specific person's claim. This paper's first contribution names a category this corpus's existing MSA/BZM framework has treated as if it did not exist. Mortality Symmetry Axiom names diffuse, opaque causation; the Biological Zero-Day Mechanism names discrete, dated, individually attributable causation. Petryna's Chernobyl case sits in neither category: the originating event is discrete and known, but the individual-level biological linkage between that event and any specific person's specific illness remains genuinely, persistently scientifically contestable, given radiation's stochastic and probabilistic effects on any single body. This paper calls this contested attribution and argues it is the modal case for real longevity-adjacent interventions — whether a specific death resulted from insufficient or delayed access to a specific intervention is rarely as clean as BZM's formalism assumes, and Petryna's ethnography documents in exhaustive, human detail what political life looks like in the zone BZM's formal apparatus was not built to describe: a bureaucratic and scientific battleground substantially resembling the corpus's Attribution stage stalled indefinitely rather than converting cleanly to Legitimation. The paper's second contribution extends The Fourth Fictitious Commodity's account of why A5-driven mobilization underperforms Polanyi's class-based double movement, adding a mechanism Petryna's ethnography supplies and Polanyi's could not: biological citizenship, on Petryna's account, is not simply an empowering new form of political agency but frequently a symptom of state retreat — a narrow, medicalized, individually-adjudicated claims channel that emerges precisely when broader social-contract and welfare obligations have already substantially failed. If this corpus's own G→A→L→C sequence increasingly channels through biological-citizenship-style claims, this may indicate not a promising path to correction but evidence that the generalized governance capacity capable of correction has already retreated — a diagnostic this paper states plainly rather than resolves. This paper proposes a phase-transition account of law, explaining how break-holding turns a path from a temporary channel of current operation into a stable regularity that guides later operation. Break-holding is not ordinary selection. It is the process by which a system breaks the dominance of an old path while holding the continuability of a new path, allowing the path to move from biased flow into stable fixation. -/- The paper works within the framework Law=(Q,W,C,U). Q denotes the re-enterable path (...) space, W denotes the accumulated depth of a path, C denotes the current fit cost, and U denotes the update function. Whether a path has become a law cannot be determined only by repeated operation or by the growth of historical depth. It depends on whether the path gains and maintains a cross-temporal settling margin within a reproducible input band. This margin is the stable advantage of one path over competing candidate paths. A path becomes a law only when this advantage enters later settling conditions and is at least partly supported by the path’s own depth, fit-continuity, or update-writing. -/- The paper also distinguishes initial law-formation from law-reformation. Initial law-formation occurs when no strong old path is yet suppressing the new path, and a path gradually stabilizes through current fit, local activation, or internal bias. Law-reformation occurs when an old law already suppresses a new path. In that case, the new path must first gain a break-holding opportunity, enter the current selectable range, or change the ordering of path costs before it can accumulate depth and become a new law. Thus, law-formation is not mechanical repetition but a dynamic process involving threshold, margin, updating, hysteresis, and transition between stable states. This paper proposes the limit form of reason, explaining why a finite system that continues under open variation cannot rely only on established paths, past experience, or stable regularities. The previous papers define law as the structure that gives a system stable continuation tendency, and reason as the capacity to rewrite the operating conditions of law when old paths generate lock pressure. This paper further argues that, in a finite system with cross-temporal reuse, growing path depth, changing input or internal (...) re-presentation, and future differences that cannot be fully covered by a finite set of familiar paths, lock pressure is not merely accidental. It recurs during long-term operation. -/- The paper distinguishes two forms of pressure. The first is ordering pressure: a new path is already within the current selectable range and fits the current situation better, yet an old path still settles first because its accumulated depth is stronger. The second is entry pressure: a new path could better maintain closure, stability, or lower loss, yet it has not entered the current selectable range and therefore cannot compete. In the face of these pressures, continuing the old path, stopping, collapsing, random jumping, only changing ordering, only changing entry, or one-time suppression cannot provide a complete solution. They either remove the system from the domain of continuing systems or only offer local relief without preventing the return of old paths. -/- Therefore, any finite system that continues under open variation must manifest four break-holding functions at the functional level: G, dC, Omega, and dU. G denotes the detection of pressure produced by old-path failure. dC denotes the rewriting of path-fit ordering. Omega denotes the regulation of which paths can enter the current selectable range. dU denotes the capacity to write a newly successful path into future updating. The significance of this argument is that thinking, creativity, cognitive flexibility, habit change, and adaptive intelligence can be understood as necessary structures by which finite systems avoid lock-in and maintain continuation under open variation. This paper proposes a general form of reason, understood as the structural capacity by which a system that has already formed stable regularities can rewrite its own operating conditions when old paths fail, old experience becomes insufficient, or old patterns produce closure. -/- In the previous chapter, law is defined as Law=(Q,W,C,U), a stable continuation structure formed by path space, accumulated historical depth, current fit cost, and an update function. Law explains why familiar paths come forth first, but it also (...) raises a further problem: if old paths become stronger through accumulated depth, why is the system not completely locked by them? This paper argues that reason must be introduced. Reason is not logical rule itself, not subjective arbitrary choice, and not random disturbance. It is a second-order rewriting capacity that acts on the current operating conditions of law after a law-structure has already formed. -/- The paper formalizes reason as Reason=(G,dC,Omega,dU). Here, G denotes the tension function, namely the pressure generated between the expected or actual result of an old path and the current problem, task, or constraint. dC denotes the fit-rewriting function, which changes the cost-ordering of old and new paths in the current situation. Omega denotes the regulation of the settleable domain, which opens entry conditions for new paths and temporarily restricts the direct dominance of old paths. dU denotes the update-rewriting function, through which a newly successful path enters subsequent accumulated depth, so that the breakthrough is not merely one-time suppression but can become a new regularity. -/- This framework can explain thinking, creativity, reasoning, habit change, institutional reform, and creative capacity in artificial intelligence. For neuroscience and cognitive science, it offers a structural account of how old responses are inhibited and new behaviors are formed. For artificial intelligence, it suggests that systems relying only on training distribution and familiar paths mainly exhibit law, while stronger creative capacity requires detecting tension, reordering path costs, opening new paths, and writing successful paths back into future updating. This paper proposes a general form of law understood as stable continuation tendency. It does not treat law as an externally given static rule, nor does it explain each operation as probabilistic sampling. Instead, it defines law as a dynamic structure generated by re-enterable path space, accumulated historical depth, current fit, and an update function. -/- The core form is Law=(Q,W,C,U). Here, Q denotes the space of re-enterable paths, W denotes the accumulated depth of a path, C denotes the current (...) fit cost between an incoming situation and a path, and U denotes the update function through which each settling modifies future depth. On this basis, settling cost Theta is derived from current fit and accumulated depth. A familiar path comes forth first not because it is randomly sampled, but because accumulated depth lowers its present settling cost. -/- The framework offers a unified structural account of habit formation, memory reinforcement, conceptual stabilization, induction, language connection, action selection, erroneous belief persistence, and path bias in intelligent systems. For neuroscience and cognitive science, it provides a model for neural pathway reinforcement, memory sedimentation, and behavioral habit formation. This paper develops a formal account of causal explanation, grounded in a theory of conversational pragmatics, and inspired by the interventionist idea that explanation is about asking and answering what-if-things-had-been-different questions. We illustrate the fruitfulness of the account, relative to previous accounts, by showing that widely recognised "explanatory virtues" emerge naturally, as do subtle empirical patterns concerning the impact of norms on causal judgments. This shows the value of a "communication-first" approach to explanation: getting clear on explanation’s communicative dimension is (...) an important prerequisite for philosophical work on explanation. The result is a simple but powerful framework for incorporating insights from the cognitive sciences into philosophical work on explanation, which will be useful for philosophers or cognitive scientists interested in explanation. We are accustomed to reading causality from the past toward the future: first causes, then effects. But what if causality can also be read otherwise — from a future whole toward its own prehistory? Retrocausality is reverse causation in time, in which the past is determined by the future. The hidden-support account of confounding gives a negative result: the same baseline public law, even augmented by the true average treatment effect, may be compatible with either zero or arbitrarily large update-relevant structural gap. This paper develops the corresponding positive theory, with one correction: arbitrary finite environment classes determine a nonempty poset of adequate supports that need not have a least element. A finite three-state example shows why the existence hypothesis is substantive. In the public-fiber-saturated case, however, the poset has (...) a least element: the quotient generated by public observation and the fiberwise level sets of the estimand contrast. Failed public descent then has an operational measure: the largest disagreement in the target estimand between admissible environments that share a fixed public law, with a global worst-case version obtained by ranging over public laws. This is the diameter of the corresponding partial-identification set, and in saturated finite cases it has closed-form fiber-range formulae. The ordinary log-cardinality support gap remains a useful qualitative obstruction, but it controls transport risk only after calibration by effect separation and reweighting richness. The epistemological payoff is that causal warrant is not regularity plus truth; it is regularity plus the right support for update. Hume's missing necessity becomes missing descent. (shrink)

The question of extraterrestrial civilization and unknown technology has long been governed by two contrary yet equally crude attitudes. At one pole, the unknown is quickly mystified, as though anything not yet explained already pointed to alien civilizations, higher dimensions, or ancient miracles. At the other pole, the unknown is prematurely compressed into misidentification, hallucination, instrumental error, or low-level natural phenomena, as though unfamiliarity itself carried no theoretical significance. Drawing on the ontology of Radiance-Will, this monograph rewrites the extraterrestrial question (...) from the empirical dispute over whether aliens have already reached Earth into an ontological inquiry into how civilization manifests, is borne, becomes exhausted, reorganizes itself, and persists as afterglow on a cosmic scale. Its central claim is that, if extraterrestrial civilization exists, it should not be understood as miracle, spectacle, or a cosmic mirror of human society. It should instead be understood as a possible form in which cosmic potential enters stable manifestation through a particular planetary instrument, differentiated life, civilizational will, technical systems, and structures of civilizational bearing. Civilizational will, in this account, is not a collective personality or a cosmic subject; it is the capacity of difference to achieve trans-individual continuity through memory, institutions, technology, and structures of value. Unknown advanced technology should likewise not be understood as supernatural power, but as the intensification, complexification, externalization, and scalar expansion of the instrument. This monograph also introduces and tightens the concept of civilizational reorganization. After exhaustion, civilization does not face only failure and residue; under strict constraints it may also enter new modes of manifestation through lower-dissipation forms, post-biological transitions, distributed organization, cognitive complexification, and value reordering. The key task of extraterrestrial-civilization research is therefore not simply to ask who is out there, but to understand which kinds of civilizational radiance become observably manifest, which remain low in manifestation, untranslatable, exhausted, reorganized, or present only as technological afterglow. The result is an ontology of cosmic civilization that is at once open and restrained: open to the possibility of non-human forms of civilization, and restrained in refusing to elevate every unknown phenomenon directly into a new ontology or into evidence of the extraterrestrial. This short monograph takes structural constraint, admissibility, manifestation, vessel, and sustainable manifestation as its central concepts, and attempts to provide a higher-level theoretical language for the research and development of more advanced AI. It argues that current AI research continues to progress in model scale, reasoning performance, and system integration, but that intelligence cannot be understood only through computation, prediction, task completion, and efficiency optimization. Genuinely advanced intelligence must also include structural sensitivity, boundary awareness, long-term stability, coordination of bearing, and (...) judgment concerning value direction. The argument begins with the claim that explanation cannot be monopolized by causal production. Intelligence should not only be understood by asking how results are produced; it must also be understood by asking which paths are constrained, which forms are admissible, and which states can remain stable over time. On this basis, manifestational ontology repositions AI. If being is not mere occurrence but continuous manifestation, and if manifestation requires vessels in order to acquire real bearing, then AI should not be reduced to an ordinary tool, nor should it be deified as a natural subject. It should be understood as a powerful artificial vessel that bears manifestation within language, memory, interpretation, creation, and institutions. On this basis, more advanced intelligence is defined as organized manifestational capacity. The monograph analyzes AI through five dimensions - the vessel of language, the vessel of memory, the vessel of interpretation, the vessel of creation, and the vessel of institution - and diagnoses pseudo-radiance, parasitic stability, linguistic exhaustion, the illusion of the vessel, and the risk of deification. Finally, it translates the proposition that the good is the structural enhancement of sustainable manifestation into an evaluative scale for AI research and development, and proposes corresponding research modules and initial paths of validation. This book is an applied ontological treatise based on the Ontology of the Luminous Will. It discusses the fundamental basis, value boundaries, and methodological paths for smart city planning and construction. Its central concern is not whether smart cities can build more platforms, connect more data, or deploy more algorithms, but whether the differences of life within the city can be seen, borne, governed within admissible boundaries, and reorganized after structural exhaustion. The Luminous City is not a visual spectacle created (...) by lights, screens, exhibition halls, or digital twin models. In this book, radiance has a strict ontological meaning: it refers to the process by which differences move from an unmanifest state into a visible, perceptible, discussable, and bearable state. The real question of smart cities is therefore whether manifestation is real, whether bearing structures are adequate, whether regulation has boundaries, and whether renewal remains possible. This book maintains a fundamental judgment: the city is not a machine, but a complex vessel through which differences are continuously manifested. Within the city exist roads, buildings, platforms, institutions, and algorithms, as well as bodies, memories, fears, care, desires, conflicts, ecological pressures, and public life. If a smart city focuses only on the former while obscuring the latter, it becomes an efficient system of concealment; only when the latter can enter structures of bearing can the city become a true Luminous City. In this book, will does not refer to a psychological subject or unified consciousness, but to the structural tendency by which differences within a constraint system persist without reverting to an unmanifest state. Radiance does not refer to visual brightness, but to the manifestational process by which differences enter a visible, perceptible, discussable, and sustainable state. This book proposes the concept of "individual radiance" in order to explain how an individual life, under finite conditions such as body, time, relationship, institution, and technology, allows its own difference to become manifest, borne, and reorganized. The book takes as its basic chain "unmanifest potential - persistence of difference - radiant manifestation - vessel - admissibility - exhaustion - reorganization." It rejects both the reduction of life to linear success and the dilution of life into a pure stream of (...) feelings. Instead, it understands life as a process of continuing formation under structural constraint. The book is divided into three parts. Part I explains how the individual takes form, establishing the ontological foundation, the cyclical model, and the practical methodology. Part II explains how the individual judges and corrects itself, discussing value, cases, theoretical boundaries, and dangerous uses. Part III explains how the individual enters the common world, unfolding questions of relationship, education, organization, institution, the technological age, and the mature life. Its final proposition is this: mature life is not infinite expansion and not the realization of every possibility, but the preservation of clarity, boundary, bearing, rhythm, and reorganizability within finitude, so that the difference truly worth continuing does not lose its light. This book applies the manifestational ontology of the Luminous Will to the analysis of group behavior among animals and insects. Traditional explanations often oscillate between two directions: on the one hand, they reduce group behavior to individual actions, local stimuli, and causal mechanisms; on the other hand, they easily over-totalize group order through expressions such as "collective intelligence," "collective will," or "superorganism." This book proposes a third path: the group behavior of animals and insects is neither a simple sum of (...) isolated individual behaviors nor the appearance of a mysterious collective subject, but a higher-order manifestational structure formed by multiple life-vessels within a shared environment, local signals, feedback mechanisms, and a space of admissibility. On the basis of the explanatory division among causal production, structural constraint, and admissibility, this book further employs a six-level model: the unmanifest precondition, the persistence of difference, radiance, topology and admissibility, the vessel, and collapse and reorganization. Through this model it analyzes ant trails, bee colonies, termite mounds, locust swarms, bird flocks, fish schools, and herds or packs. The book emphasizes that an individual action is only an occurrence; group behavior truly manifests only when local differences acquire persistence, stable recognizability, and a bearing form within constraint. The aim of this book is not to propose new biological mechanisms, nor to replace empirical science, but to provide a restrained structural language for centerless order in complex living systems. It acknowledges the importance of individual mechanisms while also showing that group stability cannot be fully compressed into the causal sum of individual actions. It acknowledges the explanatory power of whole patterns while refusing to mystify the group as a supersubject. In this way, group behavior is understood as a higher-order collective vessel formed among life-vessels: it takes shape within constraint, becomes exhausted in time, collapses under disturbance, and reorganizes under new conditions. Intuitively, agents can be causally responsible for outcomes through failures to act—forgetting to salt the soup makes me causally responsible for the soup’s bland taste. At the same time, it seems that not all our omissions make us causally responsible for outcomes—my failure to wear pink whilst making the soup doesn’t make me responsible for anything. It has proven difficult to find a systematic way to distinguish between those seemingly inert omissions and those that connect us to outcomes. Classical determinism treats determination as the unique fixing of a single realized item and therefore has difficulty explaining how probabilistic phenomena can still fall within the general form of determinism. This paper proposes Probability-Distribution Determinism (PDD): when the full determining conditions obtain, what is uniquely determined is not a single realized item but the resultant state of affairs expressed as a probability distribution; classical determinism is the special case in which one outcome has probability $1$. Non-PDD refers to non-deterministic cases (...) that do not satisfy this definition. At the metaphysical/logical level, the paper distinguishes PDD from physical mechanisms, empirical regularities, and epistemic tools, and on this basis analyzes the structural boundaries of PDD, the contextual adaptation of causal language, and relation-type misplacements in theories of causation, puzzles of responsibility attribution, and Simpson's paradox. This book proposes a manifestational ontology. Its aim is to show that being is not mere occurrence, nor merely a chain of causal production, but a process of manifestation in which persistence, form, boundary, bearing, exhaustion, afterglow, and value-direction are acquired within structural constraint. This book continues the explanatory work of From Causal Production to Structural Constraint. The earlier work criticized explanatory monism, which compresses explanation into causal production, and distinguished three irreducible explanatory roles: causal production, structural constraint, and admissibility. Building on that basis, the present work argues further that these explanatory roles are not merely linguistic classifications, but disclosures within cognition of the organizational functions of reality itself. The book takes “the Luminous Will” as its core concept, while strictly refusing to personify, mystify, or substantialize it. “Will” here is not psychological desire, theological command, or cosmic subjecthood, but the function by which difference does not fall back into the unmanifest. “Radiance” is not physical light or mysterious energy, but the manifest state in which enduring difference acquires stable recognizability. The book presents six ontological functions of manifestation: the unmanifest precondition, will, radiance, topology and admissibility, manifestational structure and vessel, and collapse, reorganization, and local stability. Through this framework, it reinterprets life, consciousness, civilization, failed civilization, myth, ritual, narrative, AI, and value. The final part enters axiology and proposes that the good is the structural enhancement of sustainable manifestation. The good is not pleasure itself, existence itself, stability itself, power itself, or order itself. A providence that repairs a fault in the world must do so by some route, and the route is not incidental to what the repair is. This paper isolates a structural distinction in the route of providential supplementation that the philosophy-of-religion literature has felt domain by domain without naming: the difference between supplementation that operates within the natural order (inserting a natural agent into the gap a natural failure has opened) and supplementation that operates across it (reaching the target directly (...) by a channel that bypasses the ordinary governing apparatus). Two passages of the Corpus Hermeticum furnish unusually clean exemplars of each topology, co-present in a single transmitted corpus and, on the surviving text, not reconciled. In CH XVIII a cicada lights on a cithara whose string has broken and supplies the missing note from within the natural sound-producing order; in CH XVI a ray of light reaches the rational part of the soul and nullifies the daemonic government of fate by bypassing the cosmic chain that ordinarily rules embodied life. I argue that these are not two illustrations of one idea but two architectures, each with its own structural requirements, and that the distinction is logically prior to, and cuts across, the familiar trichotomy of general providence, special providence, and miracle. I distinguish the two topologies from four neighbors, show that the scholastic concursus debate and the late-twentieth-century Divine Action Project are both clarified (as a redescriptive lens, not a reduction) by treating them as disputes over route, boundary, and grain rather than over whether God acts, and develop the corollary that topology ascription is reading-relative: how finely one individuates "the natural order" determines whether a given supplementation counts as within or across. I close by generalizing the distinction beyond theology (to the governance of artificial agents, to clinical medicine, and to anomaly-explanation in the sciences), where the same two routes recur and the same recognition condition governs which one has been taken. This paper presents the preliminary results of a survey-based study investigating geneticists’ understanding of genetic causation. We are motivated by an underlying assumption that to improve interpretation and implementation of behavioral genetics research, and furthermore for that research to have a positive societal impact, it is important to reveal how geneticists themselves understand their research. Results of sixty-two survey responses from clinical and research geneticists at the University of Utah are discussed and assessed to fulfill these aims and survey the (...) landscape of the field. Analysis of our survey results revealed some variation in responses to questions about genetic causation from geneticists across different research areas. (shrink)

Causalists contend that you see a specific object (rather than a lookalike, or no object at all) because that object sits at the beginning of an appropriate causal chain that terminates in your visual experience. We argue that neither standard causalists nor their non‐causalist opponents can adequately accommodate a striking asymmetry between perception and thought. The asymmetry concerns the conditions under which a thought or sensory experience can inherit its object from another thought or sensory experience. In a recent article, Alexander Motchoulski offers a novel relational egalitarian view of reparations for historical injustice. Motchoulski argues that we ought to prefer the relational egalitarian view to available harm and inheritance theories because it avoids epistemic uncertainty. I argue that Motchoulski’s theory involves ambiguity that limits it in avoiding this epistemic uncertainty. I offer an amendment to Motchoulski’s theory that insulates it from this ambiguity and epistemic uncertainty.

This document constitutes a metaphysical manifesto with general-philosophical supplements. The concepts presented in the manifesto are set forth without proofs, or with only a minimal number of them. Logical coherence and the internal integrity of the system itself serve here as a form of justification. It is anticipated that this manifesto will be updated and expanded. This manifesto serves as an extension and deepening of the work “The Essence of General Metaphysics”. In that work, in addition to an attempt to (...) ground the method of metaphysical modelling from nothingness and notes on phenomenology, the physical structure is formalized by means of a graph of sets (with binary relations) that recursively (and randomly at the level of a single set) negate themselves, thereby generating new sets and new structure; furthermore, through their self-negation they manifest the probable hierarchies of their emergence (which one most probably arose from which). This is likely the simplest variant of algorithmic generation. At the time of composing this manifesto, the author considers that this genuinely reflects physical structure at a very deep level; however, it most probably does not constitute the deepest structural level [see the section “Ontology”, §5 — §5.3.2]. This may not be a critical point for formalization in the final theory (though doubts on this matter remain), just as, for instance, the meaninglessness of transmitting qualia through text is not critical. It is likewise not excluded that the problem of the causal self-reference “whole ⇄ part” may prove less intractable than it appears. By the time of writing this text, the author had attempted to resolve this problem and observed that it does not yield easily: he concluded that a composite approach — not purely theoretical, but also practical — would be more judicious, and resolved to observe what results from it. In this document, different theses vary in their degree of precision and speculativeness (because the conception continues to develop); however, the conceptual framework is highly determinate, with the exception of the problems identified in §5 — §5.3.2 of the “Ontology” section and in the “Current Self-Critique” section. It bears separate emphasis that, in developing this document, no particular stress was placed on maximizing definitional precision, since doing so would be counterproductive here; the primary aim was to convey the essence and logical structure of the metaphysical conception that the author currently holds. It is important to note that what is at issue is precisely definitional precision: within any single piece of writing, definitions must be maximally isomorphic, and metaphysics must contain a rigid formal core that is resistant to logical critique. Logic, in turn, should follow from a priori metaphysics, together with mathematics, physics, and a formal theory of consciousness — this is what one should strive for in developing the most fundamental science, and the author has, for the present, accomplished what was within his means. The Lateral Causality is independent of the Ascensional Causality due to the descriptive jump. Self’s number is Bleem. Contingently, human agency comes first.

Postmodernism, following the collapse of modernism's description of the world, denied the description of the world itself. Consequently, it results in sloppy, superficial, incompatible, and isolated descriptions with obscure preconditions. The promotion of fragmentation also follows this ideology. The Causality Game also remedies the neglect of causality, which was the cause of the collapse (...) of modernism. From this, characteristics such as "preconditions govern results," "I am my own king," and "grasp validly, handle validly" emerge. it also takes a critical stance toward Voltaire's famous quote. Finite empirical histories are evidence sampled from worlds, not the worlds themselves. This paper proposes Causal World-Model Advantage (CWMA), a baseline-relative log-score measure of how much a model improves over a declared empirical-trace baseline on a distribution of causal queries. Given a causal world W, a finite history H_n, a baseline B_n, a model M inferred from the same history, and a query distribution Π over observational, interventional, and counterfactual questions, CWMA is defined as D_Π(W || B_n) - D_Π(W || (...) M). It is positive when M assigns higher expected logarithmic accuracy than B_n to answers generated by W. The formal core proves non-negativity of the underlying divergence, score-equivalence with expected log-score gain, decomposition across Pearl-style query levels, and a finite-trace underdetermination result. The proposal is deliberately external and distributional: high CWMA establishes functional adequacy for causal query answering relative to Π and a baseline class, not recovery of a unique structural causal model or proof of an internal mechanism. The paper situates the trace-world distinction within earlier philosophical work on data, phenomena, and semantic views of theories, and develops benchmark-design guidance for baseline classes, structural counterfactual queries, smoothing, query-weight sensitivity, and resource accounting.
