They have done this even before everything was Appified, at least in the US. My local grocery store used to give out customized bar code key chains. They scanned the barcode when you started checking out to tie it to your account, and apply the discounts.

Now, my store's app lets you build a list online, and when you tell it what store you are going to it sorts the list by aisle. I now use that exclusively. It saves me so much time. I find that useful, and worth the exchange of my tracked shopping habits.

However, I refuse to install their app on my phone, and interact with the list through their website. I feel there is just so much more tracking they can do with an app on your phone vs. a website login.

I had been reading elsewhere that the Justice Department had already gone to two Federal judges to press charges against him, only to be denied. I am interested to see whether they bothered a third time, or simply took him into custody without the paperwork, because they could.

Who's gonna stop them?

dhork ,

It was only "horrific" because it happened in a church. The Administration is trying to make it into a hate crime against Christians. But, the protest took place because the pastor is supposedly an ICE director:

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/01/19/protesters-interrupt-service-at-cities-church-in-st-paul-claiming-pastor-works-for-ice

Fascists shouldn't get to hide behind a pulpit.

dhork ,

Yeah, but what choice did they have? Did you seriously expect them to vote for a lady?

dhork ,

Please don't give ICE any more ideas ....

The other part of this is that their employers are footing the bill for all of this. And these folks aren't being held in jail or anything. I don't know where they are but presumably they are in some extended stay hotel somewhere and still getting paid.

To me, it sounds like the shipping company is bending over backwards to placate the FBI and somehow avoid super huge fines. And as long as the shipping company is paying for it, the FBI is in no hurry.

It's because the justification that the Administration keeps giving is that they are getting "criminals" off the streets. So it's worth in these articles when ICE picks up citizens who have no criminal record. It directly illustrates how they lie.

    dhork ,

An expat is anyone who lives outside of their native country while intending to return, while an immigrant is someone who moves to another country permanently.

One reason why you rarely hear about American "immigrants" to other countries is that it is absurdly hard to relinquish US citizenship. So even if an American were to gain citizenship elsewhere, they still owe US income tax, and are reminded of their status every April.

    dhork ,

Not only that, but they have an app that is supposed to help them figure out your status using facial recognition. They are admitting that they only harass people who their app thinks looks un-American. And they believe their app even if you have valid documents that say otherwise.

    dhork ,

The problem is that, as US government officials, their words matter. Their official statements are newsworthy, even if they are lies. The media can't really ignore what they say. They can, however, illustrate when they are lying, even if this Administration throws a hissy-fit over it.

    dhork , (edited )

I think you are confusing the legitimacy of their positions and their message. Their positions are legitimate because, unfortunately, they gained their positions legitimately, either through elections or some other documented process. That's on us, ultimately. That makes what they have to say a matter of public record, and newsworthy. (There are a handful of Administration positions that are illegitimate, such as all these acting US attorneys, and the Courts are dealing with that separately.)

The message is utter bullshit, and at least in some cases, not what their voters intended when they cast their vote. But how will those voters ever know if the message is never challenged in the first place?

I believe it is possible to report the Administration's positions, while also attempting to hold them to account. The alternative is for the media to ignore it altogether. But we all know Conservative media won't do that. If other media simply refuses to cover the Administration entirely, that doesn't invalidate their message. Only by letting us know what they are saying, as well as how bonkers it all is, do we have any chance of emerging from this.

A wave of new polls shows Trump’s support cratering across the board. ( www.motherjones.com )

As President Donald Trump wraps up the first year of his second term—one marked by US aggression abroad and rising political violence at home—a wave of new polls released this week shows him and his policies at remarkably high, and in some cases record, levels of unpopularity. The part you include in the last bit about the budget (and, more importantly, appropriations) is extremely important. The reason ICE is so out of control right now is not just policy, it's also the ginormous budget that was approved by Congress. If Democrats take over even one house of Congress, it gives them some negotiating leverage. Yes, this may lead to more shutdowns when no agreement is made. But I think if Democrats gain some power back due to ICE overreach, then even they can win the messaging battle on a shutdown, too.

But the second important bit is that if Trump eats his very last cheeseburger while Democrats control at least one house of Congress, then they have a say in who the next Vice President will be. (If the VP position is vacant for any reason, including the VP becoming President, the new President's pick must be confirmed by both houses of Congress). And, really, Democrats have no reason to confirm any VP at all, not after what McConnell did to Obama's last SC pick. If the VP spot is vacant, then they can't be available to break ties, which is like one less Republican vote. And, if the new President is unable to serve for any reason (perhaps inappropriate sectional relations? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ), then the House Speaker becomes President.

He needs to gather good evidence before getting indictments. See how some of the most egregious prosecutorial overreaches of the Trump administration have been sidelined by grand juries who don't indict. That is one institution where the local processes haven't been infected by Trumpism. Minnesota prosecutors need to play by the rules, because at least for the time being, the rules are on their side.

    dhork ,

I am a strong advocate that every state with a ICE invasion should dispatch their National Guard, 1:1 for each Federal agent in their state, with orders to simply observe and take body cam footage. Rent rooms in the hotel next door, track their cars with all their fancy surveillance equipment, track all the doors they knock down (and ask them for their warrants).

I think we will see a marked behavior shift in ICE if they realize that everything they do is being watched and recorded for posterity.

YSK a US passport card costs $30 and is definitive proof of citizenship. It fits in your wallet like a credit card.

For fellow Americans living in cities where ICE is active, many people, especially those of Hispanic descent, are already carrying around passports on their persons at all times because they're rightfully afraid of being forcibly disappeared or deported to some random South American country....

    dhork ,

The main advantage is that it's a redundant form of citizenship ID. ICE can always say it is fake and confiscate it, but then you have your passport book waiting at home for your lawyer to take to the detention center to get you out (once they find out where they took you).

    dhork ,

Anyone who fails the "Peter Griffin in a Fez" test needs to get one. And double up on the card and book.

Because it doesn't matter where you were born, or what the facts are. ICE is targeting people who they believe don't belong here, based on how they look and sound. Having the card on your person is no guarantee, but maybe it will work if they are in a good mood.

It's sad that this is what it has come to in America, of all places, but here we are.

Autofocusing Smart Glasses With Eye Tracking Tech Could Make Bifocals Obsolete ( hothardware.com )

Exciting news for those enough who are 40+ and spend too much time in front of a computer screen: a Finnish startup called IXI is promising to end the era of clunky bifocals and the 'head-tilt' struggle of progressive lenses, replacing them with a pair of glasses that focus as naturally as the human eye using a combination of...

    dhork ,

This is, at least, trying to solve an actual problem. It remains to be seen whether the solution is more cost effective (and durable) as bifocals. As a human of a certain age myself, I would welcome being able to see without having to tilt my head awkwardly.

But something tells me this tech is not self-contained, and requires an always-on connection to some cloud resource which is guzzling electricity and water. No thanks! Bifocals are cheaper.

Except that the Fed spokesperson said the expensive features were removed from the plan in 2021. Which, coincidentally, is when the Biden administration moved in. If these expensive features were never in the plan, they would have said so. This implies that they were in the plan at some point, during the first Trump admjnistration, and I wonder if they encouraged it as a trap. It sounds like the type of thing they would do.
