TIL “sleet” does not have the same meaning in all English speaking countries ( en.wikipedia.org )

In the US “sleet” is the term for a winter precipitation that occurs when snow falls through a layer of warm air and melts into water droplets, then re-freezes into ice pellets as it passes through colder air closer to the ground. In many other areas that were part of the British empire that precipitation is called “ice...

ccunning ,

I didn’t know it required a freeze-thaw-freeze cycle either. I’d always been under the impression it was just rain that froze before hitting the ground.

ccunning ,

Where are you from? Based on your and OPs descriptions I’m guessing a Commonwealth country.

Being from the U.S. I’d have described it as frozen drops of rain.

ccunning ,

In the U.S. sleet bounces off the windshield instead. I think we’d call Canadian sleet wet snow. OP said we’d call it “wintry mix” which maybe some of us would but I always thought “wintry mix” was when you were on the line between snow and rain and you just got a bit of everything; snow, sleet, slush, freezing rain, etc…

ccunning ,

Yes! This is also my understanding. I’ve even experienced hail in hot tropical countries.

No they didn’t…

Surprising there’s no one representing Apple on this list.

So far Trump’s politicized DOJ has struggled to get indictments let alone convictions.

Senior Justice Department officials have repeatedly said there are no plans to follow the path normally taken in such situations and pursue an investigation into whether Mr. Ross, who fired multiple shots at Ms. Good, had used excessive force.

“Senior Justice Department officials unable to clear Ross’ name”

It isn’t legal. And they haven’t changed the law. It’s just now their policy to ignore the law.

Right now they’re trying to “shock and awe” everyone into submission and compliance before the law catches up with them.

They’ve put two active duty army infantry battalions on alert; not national guard.

They are a de facto consumption tax which disproportionately affect the less well off.

I don’t know how common this is, but my client(Voyager) has an option to block keywords (“Trump”, “DOJ”, “ICE”, etc…?)which could be one strategy.

I guess there’s a reason to favor competent but unbiased employees over sycophants biased in your favor after all…

Agitators?

ccunning ,

Not that I give a shit about Reddit, but aren’t “Submissions” generally considered posts; not comments?

Seems like this mod is trying to backsolve for their action; not actually apply the rules as written.

A hero isn’t necessarily a ham sandwich.

Well damn - I was looking to book a hotel at a location I’ve historically booked with Hilton. But since they’re out now, Marriott properties were on the short list but I guess they’re out now too.

Is this going to end up being one of those situations where all the players in the market are awful?

Yes. It was their principles that were the issue; not that it was completely out of the scope of their power.

I don't even know what else to add to this headline

it will in no way slow the resistance.

Yeah you do. You nailed it

So happy to hear this. I thought maybe I was just ancient…

Seriously - if you run a video community you really need to have and enforce a rule that gives, at the bare minimum, a brief description of what the video is.

I ain’t clicking on random YouTube links

New Year’s Eve Concerts at Kennedy Center Are Canceled [🎁 nytimes.com Gift article] ( www.nytimes.com )

A veteran jazz ensemble and a New York dance company have canceled events at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, intensifying the fallout at one of the nation’s pre-eminent arts centers after it was renamed to include President Trump....

ccunning OP ,

They didn’t change the name legally. They just changed the name on the building and what everyone in the executive branch and on the board calls it.

ccunning OP , (edited )

So, what's the distinction? They changed the name, but not through the formal process of signing documents?

It was named by Congress and can only be renamed by Congress. Trump signed an EO but EOs only control employees of the Executive Branch.

I'm having trouble understanding what steps they need to take before I can rightfully be offended, and I don't know enough about how something like a building or institution is legally or illegally named.

The EO thing is whatever. He can do whatever he wants there and no one really has any control over it. For me the line is when he physically had his name put on the building. He hired someone (with whose money?) and defaced a building that wasn’t his. Basically no different than if he put “The Trump MojoMcJojo House” on your house without your permission.

Most of the podcasts I listen to are this format. I think their enjoyment might come down to knowing (or being interested in getting to know) the speakers’ personalities.

Omnibus — Ken Jennings (of Jeopardy fame) and Jonn Roderick (of The Long Winters (or bean dad) fame) take turns on doing a deep dive on some weird but true topic.

Filmcast — Film nerds (David Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Jeff Cannata) talk about new movies they’ve watched and TV Shows they’re watching

The Incomparable — Geeks talking about various pop culture topics. This is a whole network with various podcasts focusing on different aspects of pop culture. I linked to the “main” feed which is where you’ll usually find new movie releases, but they also go back and discuss movies they’ve watched missed and classic too. Or if you’d rather browse by topic

The Accidental Tech Podcast — Three friends from childhood and professional geeks discuss current technology topics with a heavy focus on Apple from a developer and consumer perspective.

The Rest is History — Two English historians discuss various history topics from around the world at length. They just wrapped up a four part series on Jack the Ripper.

…that should be a reasonable start I hope.
