Hi, I'm Danko, 35, from Riga, 🇱🇻 #Latvia

Mostly #webdev, mostly #TypeScript, sometimes #Rust. Curly braces, semicolons, tabs. #Linux noob since 2005.

Cishet white dude, atheist, left-ish. ADHD + MDD.

I like loud electronic music, twin-stick shooters and cats.

The avatar is me rudely pointing at the viewer (since 2006). The header image is the This Is Fine dog saying "Sorry, something went wrong."

If I should've boosted your picture that I liked, it's quite likely that you should've put alt text on it.

would you still spend time with computers if you didn't have to?

please share for a more well-rounded response.

virtulis ,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@lritter yes. I would actually spend more time with computers if i didn't regularly have to deal with the revolting parts. It still feels absolutely great when I'm able to focus on something meaningful to me for six hours straight. But then something comes up because something always comes up.

is going all

After nearly three decades of KDE desktop environments running on , the future KDE Plasma 6.8 release (due early 2027) will be Wayland-exclusive.

Read the FAQ below to find out what this means for you and the future of KDE:

@kde uh-oh. I still switch my desktop to X11 when going away because I could never get Nomachine to work with kwin_wayland. Well, maybe krfb is finally stable enough to use, will have to check.

People will say things like "it's selfish to not want to have kids!" and then immediately follow it up with "Who is going to take care of you when you get old?" as if they don’t know what the word selfish means.

@Alice i just feel like forcing someone to exist in this shitshow is rude af. I could never do that to a person.

Hi everyone,

I’ve just launched the Gaza Verified Emergency Appeal to get our remaining 8 families who are stuck in the danger zone in the North to relative safety in the South.

https://gaza-verified.org/emergency/

Based on conversations @joynewacc and I have had with them to ascertain what they need (transport, land, tents), we have set the campaign goal at $15,000.

To kick things off, I’ve made a personal donation of $1,000.

These families are living in terror under nightly bombings by Israel. Please, if you can, help them survive Israel’s ongoing genocide. And please share this as widely as you can.

Thank you!

💕

PS. The donations are being collected by our not-for-profit, Small Technology Foundation and the entire sum, minus Stripe’s fees, will be transferred to the individual fundraisers of the families. We have suspended our own fundraising for Small Technology Foundation for the duration of the emergency appeal (https://small-tech.org/fund-us/).

PS. If you keep the campaign page open, you will see the progress meter update and donations coming in in real time.

virtulis ,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@aral @bnys are you planning any more of these in the future? Thank you for the work you've done on this, I'm one of those people who never donated to Gaza fundraisers before Gaza Verified, since they're all in someone else's name (understandable), and sadly scammers are better equipped for outreach than actual people suffering.

Do you like houses that are sagging into the ground?
Do you want to crouch through your doorway?
Do you want a carpeted area for head injuries?
This is the place for you!
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/508-Craig-St-Covington-KY-41011/1432350_zpid

A room with a wooden floor and walls painted white. There is a normal sized window in one wall and a small pointed cutout to get to the next room, it looks too small for a regular adult to walk through without bending.
A carpeted attic area with very very low tilted ceiling that would be very hard to get around.

Support for buttons such as Ctrl, Meta, Tab, Esc

This would be the #1 ask from me for sure, along with easier to access arrow buttons. Actually, even a painful way to send all standard keys would be very useful. Found a lot of software unusable on Plasma Mobile simply because I needed to press those buttons and couldn't. Most hilarious probably was something (okular?) going into fullscreen forever and even remembering that post restart.

That said, it's also amazing how much "desktop" software does work out of the box there.

Thank you for your efforts!

An unimaginable weight

virtulis ,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@mcc i find that hard to imagine

@mcc@mastodon.social avatar mcc , to random

I have 2 computers:

  • Desktop with NVidia 3070Ti, Windows
  • Laptop with AMD 600M integrated, Linux

I'd like to get a new monitor that supports both VRR (Gsync/Freesync) and HDR on both these machines (or if I can't support both with 1 monitor, the Desktop).

Price matters to me but "quality" kinda doesn't (my eyesight sucks & I prefer 1080p over hidpi, hidpi is glitchy). I just want HDR/VRR and for it to not be terrible.

What would you recommend, or where would you recommend I start looking?

virtulis ,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@mcc uhh yes i don't remember that number referring to anything but the diagonal ever.

But I don't remember that number ever being 25 either so :blobcatthinking:

We are scheduling an upgrade to Forgejo v12 tomorrow/today (Wednesday) within 10.00 - 14.00 CEST (08.00 - 12.00 UTC).

There will be a short period of scheduled downtime (about 10 minutes), affecting all Codeberg services. However, please be prepared that there might be unexpected stability issues, new bugs or even downtime in worst case during the whole day.

You can learn more about Forgejo v12 at https://forgejo.org/2025-07-release-v12-0/

Here is a set of questions for European-Time-Zone mastodontists especially.

  • Does your keyboard have a $ on it?
  • If not, is there a different currency symbol you have instead?
  • When a programming language makes semiregular use of $ (for example, for string substitution) does this annoy you?
virtulis ,
@virtulis@loud.computer avatar

@mcc

  • it does, in the usual place.
  • it becomes euro with right alt.
  • not at all, it's probably the most fitting one for the purpose on the keyboard
