@lritter yes. I would actually spend more time with computers if i didn't regularly have to deal with the revolting parts. It still feels absolutely great when I'm able to focus on something meaningful to me for six hours straight. But then something comes up because something always comes up.

Thank you for the work you've done on this, I'm one of those people who never donated to Gaza fundraisers before Gaza Verified, since they're all in someone else's name (understandable), and sadly scammers are better equipped for outreach than actual people suffering.

Support for buttons such as Ctrl, Meta, Tab, Esc

This would be the #1 ask from me for sure, along with easier to access arrow buttons. Actually, even a painful way to send all standard keys would be very useful. Found a lot of software unusable on Plasma Mobile simply because I needed to press those buttons and couldn't. Most hilarious probably was something (okular?) going into fullscreen forever and even remembering that post restart.

That said, it's also amazing how much "desktop" software does work out of the box there.

I have 2 computers:

  • Desktop with NVidia 3070Ti, Windows
  • Laptop with AMD 600M integrated, Linux

I'd like to get a new monitor that supports both VRR (Gsync/Freesync) and HDR on both these machines (or if I can't support both with 1 monitor, the Desktop).

Price matters to me but "quality" kinda doesn't (my eyesight sucks & I prefer 1080p over hidpi, hidpi is glitchy). I just want HDR/VRR and for it to not be terrible.

What would you recommend, or where would you recommend I start looking?

the "social web" has a lot of connotations and i don't really like it because it frames the fediverse as a product of "the world wide web" (both of the ecosystem and the philosophy) when really it was the grassroots community that created the fediverse. the "social web" is derived from timBL's view of the "web" that has molded the modern w3c, an organization that has become an entirely corporate endeavor. there is no new "social web" that has emerged in recent years, the fediverse has been around for over a decade, and it is only the "social web" insofar as w3c is involved. i reject the notion that the success of the fediverse has anything to do with the semantic web concepts that have massively complicated data transport or the years of politics involved in the creation of activitypub. we are where we are today because people decided to come here, because people chose to make the fediverse their home, and because poorly funded developers have dedicated their free time to build a platform they felt they could call home. the social web foundation makes me uncomfortable, even in just the terminology they use, ignoring the many obvious problems it has (like only have social media accounts on twitter and threads)

@eniko yeah, but it took me years to give up on advocating linux. At least you could be convincing one person at a time and some of them did stick around.

I'm not saying your efforts are meaningless, quite the opposite. Just as with Linux, outlining exactly how it can actually benefit a specific person works 100x better than talking about how it's cool/free/fast/whatever.

But "well I'm there with some cool nerds you don't know and also I'm running my own server if you need it" is the best I've got for most.

If your server is slow and glitchy, you're not alone, this seems to be affecting a lot of servers at the moment.

A major internet infrastructure provider called OVH is apparently having technical difficulties. Servers and hosting companies which use that particular provider may be affected by this.

Please don't blame your admin, it's not their fault 🙂
