Google's emissions are up over 50%, Amazon builds huge data centers powered by 75% natural gas.

Remember all those posts telling us that "AIs climate impact isn't that bad" supported by some really funky math/perspective and/or numbers Sam Altman invented?

Here's the actual impact.

"AI" is a fossil fuel technology.

@tante

Missing actual impact in meaningful global context. We can do better.

Data centers accounted for around 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption in 2024.

Data centers will use twice as much energy by 2030 — driven by AI use... but that's just 10% of global electricity demand 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 to 2030, less than the share from industrial motors, air conditioning in homes and offices, or electric vehicles.

Trump is running foreign policy in a completely unhinged way. Iran will like this i guess.

I don't know how well people remember the history, but Israel (mostly Bibi) has history of direct diplomatic humiliation and undermining of WH or SecState. GWB, Obama, Biden, Rice, Albright, Kerry, everyone, once they try to have some independent Middle-East policy.

Those come in form of announcements or actions during or after visits, or direct confrontation when both share a podium.

Unhinged or not agenda does not matter. US president has no say.

If the Iranian leadership has the feeling that Israel wants to completely destroy Iran's military capabilities, why wouldn't they do something extreme like attacking US bases in the region, destroy oil installations in the neighbourhood , close Hormuz etc, while they still have the capabilities... 🤔
There doesn't seem to be an opening for de-escalation for Iran?

Does the pro-democracy movement in Iran support these attacks, and want help from Israel and the US? Or is this another case of someone outside the region knowing better.

I mean, monarchists and some other fringe groups do, but they are sorry bunch of pretenders getting shady support.

I'm fairly certain that majority of Iranians want democracy. Monarchist and MEK are minority.

I'm questioning your implicit assumption that the majority of Iranian opposition welcomes attacks from the US or Israel.

In 2009-2010 demonstrations they were clear that democracy must come from inside by Iranians. They wanted help from the US but military kind.

Have things changed?

“The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers,” says the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom. “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

@w7voa
Troops deployed under the Title 10 orders are prohibited from providing “direct assistance” to civilian law enforcement.

The two other ways to deploy are

  1. Insurrection Act of 1807, and
  2. Title 32 (state's governor has been authorized or directed by the president to mobilize or activate the National Guard)

They both allow troops to to provide direct assistance and get involved.

We have proposed the EU budget for 2026!

Concretely, the 2026 draft budget:

✔ Continues the stable funding for Ukraine through the Ukraine Facility
✔ Reinforces funding for security, defence, asylum and migration
✔ Creates major incentives and flexibilities for Member States to focus on:

🌍 competitiveness
🛡️ defence
🏡 affordable housing
💧 water resilience
⚡ energy transition

This budget will continue to provide stable and predictable funding to power the EU’s political priorities!

Newspeak naming.

The EU spends more third of its budget on agricultural subsidies every year. 80% of CAP subsidies go to just 20% of farms, mostly the largest ones.

The EU is not only facing a tradewar (bad enough in itself) but potentially a total break-down in relations with the USA. I hope all scenarios and plans are ready. Also for example for the digital side of things. What if we have to quickly pull back our data/services from companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google etc. for critical data/applications? 🤔

Trump yields easily under pressure, obsesses over optics, appearing to win is more important than winning to him.

I'm not surprised if Canada tariffs are gone after his talk with Trudeau today, or in few weeks.

US companies will pressure him, public opinion will turn against him, and he seeks validation over everything else.

Critical EU data stays in the EU and is handled by citizens of EU even if the company running the services is US based.

That order compromises EU-US data transfers in EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

EU Data boundary means there are no data transfers.

The company being registered in the US does not mean that EU citizens working for Microsoft in EU follow US laws and executive orders and break EU laws. International companies follow the laws in each country they operate.

@jmcs @ErikJonker geopolitics@a.gup.pe icon geopolitics group
Microsoft subsidiaries have lawyers and contracts in EU they don't breach local laws. Microsoft offices in EU would likely refuse to do that and inform EU.

Nadella would challenge order in the US court and meantime prepare to change corporate headwaters, or spin off Microsoft International B.V. (registered in Netherlands). Microsoft would stop being international company if it stayed in the US.

I already linked go back in thread, but lets use the document your provided instead, page 15.

"... Microsoft’s new EU Data Boundary, combined with changes to its business model, as announced by Microsoft’s President Brad Smith in Brussels recently seem to prevent any data going from the EU to the US and might also contain a ringfence against the CLOUD Act. ....
