It's everywhere. Been looking at moving to Latin America (Uruguay or Panama specifically) and many businesses there don't even have/publish regular phone numbers. The tour companies I traveled with said you can't get anything done without whatsapp.

This is not at all surprising. We got rid of prime about a year ago and generally have avoided buying through Amazon, but on a few occasions, it's been the only option so we bit the bullet. It was awful.

Prices and shipping listed were for prime members (autoselected of course) with small print nonprime member prices selectable. Their once famously easy purchase process was multiple screens full of "don't you want to rejoin prime??" pages with the option "join" already checked. Even after selecting the nonmember price and saying no to prime, going to the checkout page revealed an option auto checked for 'faster shipping' that was actually an option for rejoining prime. In buying multiple items this was autoselected on each of them separately, so you're agreeing to prime if you miss changing one.

Even if I have to order from them periodically (which I avoid like the plague), I have no intention of paying for prime again. The whole purchase process is an indicator that dropping prime is making an impact and I want that message to sink in.

For those who have Alexa, downgrading the plan, or even better-- finding an alternative home assistant, will send an equally powerful message, even if Amazon isn't ready to hear it.

Omg you're going to have so much fun! It's the best Fallout game and still one of my top 10 ever.

It's the only game I took time to mod with textures, bug fixes and even a couple extra quests and it was totally worth it. I still think of going back and rebuilding my old modded setup.

I use several services on this list and I'm curious about everyone's opinions on multi-service providers and whether it's a good idea to go with all-in-one or purchase services separately. I have a paid Proton account and use the mail and vpn, but kept 1password and dropbox accounts as well since they were already set up. It's tempting to have everything integrated and pay one bill, but it feels risky to put all my digital eggs in one tech company basket.

What do you think?

FYI, here's the posting.

Check out this job at Love-my-work: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4272457232

The company is a bit suspicious, having only 4 employees on LI, including a welder and a doctor, but I think the insane number of applicants is still pretty telling of how bad things have gotten.

This one is by far the worst I've seen, but all remote job postings get hundreds and often thousands of applications within a few days.

Corsair Says It Mistakenly Listed An "Incorrect" Price For Dominator Titanium 48 GB DDR5; Hence, Cancels All January 1 Orders For The Kit ( wccftech.com )

Apparently, the user whose PC order was canceled by Corsair without any "sensible" reason wasn’t an isolated case, as Corsair has confirmed that it also canceled DDR5 RAM orders placed on January 1. After the report on the Corsair PC order cancellation went viral, Corsair's official X handle announced the reason for the ...

We do not currently accept pre-orders for DRAM kits

If they don't accept pre-orders as a rule, it seems hard to believe a system error would list something on a pre-order at any price. It reads like they listed the item too low and don't want to look like jerks for not honoring their own posted prices.

The woman became famous enough that she held her own art exhibition.

I can't process how that makes any sense.

What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge Windows ( www.theregister.com )

As Torvalds pointed out in 2019, is that while some major hardware vendors do sell Linux PCs – Dell, for example, with Ubuntu – none of them make it easy. There are also great specialist Linux PC vendors, such as System76, Germany's TUXEDO Computers, and the UK-based Star Labs, but they tend to market to people who are ...

Agreed. We are in an age where tech is spoonfed to people with slick UIs and automated installs. Linux needs that--some kind of easy onramp to get people comfortable and familiar with it--in order to have a chance of getting broad acceptance. It's not particularly accessible even for people with a small amount of tech knowledge and skill.

I tried to set up mint on an old laptop recently and immediately hit a roadblock before I could even get an install going. I did some research and found some options to troubleshoot it but gave up because the guidance I found online was a bit more complex than I felt comfortable acting on.

I really want to try out Linux, but if someone like me (with some technology knowledge and comfort) still gets this easily tripped up on installing it, I can't imagine the average person taking the leap successfully.

restingboredface ,

I think it was something like that, though its been about 6 weeks so Im a little fuzzy on it now. I was following a guide I'd found online and reached something different from what the guide said, so I aborted install to check on somethings and that apparently set something that when i tried to restart installation it kept throwing an error. Something about starting the installation without completing it messed something else up that I havent been able to fix. I spent an hour or so looking through stuff, even wiped the PC and it still wouldn't work. I've been meaning to go back to it but haven't gotten around to it.

restingboredface ,

I feel like any time there is a headline about a Waco man it's something ridiculous like this.

restingboredface ,

Also curious about this. I didn't want to do a whole new play through with a gog one but don't really want the hassle of setting up the London mod with my steam version. Been holding off until I get more time to mess with it but the longer I go the more likely I just suck it up and start over on gog.

restingboredface ,

Yes I played with my husband and we loved it, but havent come back to it since finishing the story. Seems to have limited replayability.

restingboredface ,

Yes! Here's a nice summary of the recovery. https://www.thearchaeologist.org/blog/the-discovery-of-king-richard-iiis-burial-site

If youre a history buff, I highly recommend History Calling's video on Richard III and the loss and recovery of his body. It's lengthy but well researched and has lots of interesting context.

restingboredface ,

So true. As a kid a was in a booklovers' mail club where I'd get a couple books appropriate for my age and I loved it. I always was working through something up through high school and college.

But grad school required reading hundreds of pages of research for class every week and I was just exhausted from it. I think I only made it through the Harry Potter books throughout my PhD. I go through periods where I'll get through a couple books, and there's a few writers I follow, but I haven't gotten back to loving reading the way I used to.

Has anybody heard any news on the HDMI issue Valve has been working on? I really want one but I use my PC connected to my TV so HDMI is pretty necessary.

"One false move and you are dead"

This is the message of an old campaign for the #securityRoadway in #UK. It sounds ridiculous, if only the same message (maybe a bit watered down), was not used for road safety campaigns nowadays. ...

Is spelling it 'kerb' a British English thing? I've always thought it was curb.

Language Jones is awesome. He covers linguistics, language learning and slang and he presents research in a really accessible way. He's worth following even if you aren't usually into language stuff.

restingboredface OP ,

I'm excited to see where it goes :)

restingboredface OP ,

Well I'm glad to hear it at least got an ending anyway. That's my biggest fear with starting a new show now-so many of them just stop midway through a major plot and leave things hanging.

restingboredface ,

This right here is the problem. Consume if you want but be considerate. Smoke at home, or take edibles if you're going to be out around nonsmokers. There's no need for bringing your stank out in public.

Finally I got a chance to play Red Dead Redemption 2 for the very first time, and the graphic is clean sharp and none of that blurry mess most of the AAA games have nowadays.

Even though I play it on my old low end laptop, I still able to get a stable 60fps on medium settings at 1080p (Linux) and the game is still gorgeous looking probably looks better than most if not all UE5 games released in the past 3 years.

restingboredface ,

The UI is why I couldn't finish it. My gaming PC is hooked up to my TV and even with a 70" screen I couldn't read hardly any of the maps or menus. I even dusted of a pair of readers but still struggled. It's a beautiful game and looks incredible but after a few hours of that I just got tired of squinting and moved on.

Maybe someday I'll come back to it and try to find a mod or something but it's just not worth giving myself a headache when there are so many great games out there.

restingboredface ,

“When you look at the way people with ADHD learn, and especially if they are hypercurious, they start reading something and they’re like, ‘Ooh what is that? I want to learn about this. What is that? Does it connect to that?’ It looks a lot more like a messy mind map rather than a straight [line],” Le Cunff says. “The problem is when there’s no space for exploration.”

I cannot express to you how much this captures my experience reading. It can sometimes take days for me to get past a page when I'm constantly stopping to look up other things a passage made me think of or write down ideas and questions.

I feel this too when I play video games. I like to open every box, go through every door, listen to all the recordings etc. When I play coop with my husband it drives him a bit nuts when he wants to focus on a specific quest and I'm exploring.

restingboredface ,

I started that process and hit a road block after getting all the books downloaded to my pc. Can you recommend any tutorials or guides that might help get everything converted?

restingboredface ,

Awesome, thanks!

The guy was suing for $50K +expenses. That is not even a drop in the bucket for Disney and they fought it. That says plenty about the culture over there.

restingboredface ,

Yep, I managed to find a license for 2019 several years aho and have just transferred it to my computers and I've upgraded. No copilot or prompts to upgrade.

I'm still testdriving libreoffice to try to dump ms entirely but I like having a backup available.

restingboredface ,

That's also why I don't like to watch a TV show when it first comes out, since it's so common for them to get canceled partway through a major storyline. Got left hanging a few times and it sucked.

restingboredface ,

What bothers me is that I'm getting all this "upgrade to windows 11" crap from other companies, like my antivirus. I get that eset reason to tell me about possible security risks to my computer, but I'd prefer if they give me options for addressing it that don't involve dealing with a new OS, especially the win 11 dumpster fire.

What are you all playing lately?

I'm always wishing there was more interaction and discussion on the niche Lemmy groups. Today I got to wondering if there were some games we could focus on to help foster our small community. But what is everyone playing or interested in playing? Are we all off playing our own obscure indie favorites or are there some games we ...

restingboredface ,

I like to mix things up, so I'm replaying Wolfenstein New Colossus on death incarnate difficulty, and sprinkling in Steve's Warehouse, Balatro and Hades for shorter sessions.

I'm waiting for a good sale to pick up Indiana Jones and will probably get Borderlands 4 sometime soon so hubs and I can play it together. I'm also considering a new playthrough of Cult of the Lamb now that the expansion has been announced.

restingboredface ,

I tried it a while back and struggled to get into it. I wondered since if it was just not the right time though bc it looks so much like my kind of game. Might be worth dusting it off again to give it another go.

restingboredface ,

I'm not getting too excited yet. All class action lawsuits I've heard of end up netting individual members only a few bucks each. Unless the settlement specifically grants authors right to opt out of AI scraping, it's only a small victory. Hopefully settlement details will come out soon.

restingboredface ,

Important to note that the article says it can save to Onedrive or cloud drive of your choice. Its not clear exactly how that works if you want to save to Box, or Dropbox or something else but it looks like the option is there and it seems like you may even be able to turn that off if you want.

If it's still not your preference, I've seen licenses for office 2019 for sale on the web, which predates a lot of the cloud integration and AI tool nonsense. Between that and libre office there are ways to avoid using this service if you're so inclined.

I have a PhD in research psychology, and worked with researchers in a lot of other disciplines. I have been mansplained about topics in my field (including the topic of my dissertation) by more MBAs than any other field. More often than not they are vastly oversimplifying or just getting things completely wrong. Try telling them that though and it's like talking to a wall.

restingboredface ,

Yeah I do think there is something to the culture of MBA programs. All the information available for current and prospective students at my university was very much of the tone that mbas change the world. The halls of the business school were filled with famous rich people who'd visited the school or gifted money along with plaques about MBA grads and the amazing things they did. It's just full of subtle reminders about how the degree is a gateway to being some big powerful person. I'm sure that makes an impact on the students' attitudes.

Popup Ads in Your Pickup Truck? RAM Trucks Now Feature Scammy Ads on the Center Display ( fuelarc.com )

Well folks, it finally happened. The screen in your pickup truck… your last bastion of peace from the chaos of unskippable advertisements… now plays popup ads. Not even subtle ones. GM was talking pretty publicly about doing this a couple years ago and there was a mild dust up over it. They also mentioned enthusiasm over the potential revenue to come from mining and selling driver data (which got them sued) . Last I heard about it was late 2023 or early 2024, so it seems their new data team.has been busy.

Don kid yourselves though, if GM is doing it, everyone else is or will be.

restingboredface ,

Thank you for making your students do that. I'm sure it made them miserable at the time but I guarantee they are better for it.

In college I had a similar experience with statistics. I had to run a factor analysis by hand start to finish, calculating standard deviations, means, and all the other crap, showing work over 3 pages to get eigenvalues and all that. It sucked, but dammit if I dont have a WAY better appreciation for how it works now than I ever would have otherwise.

restingboredface ,

Plus, it's not like you can just join the military and quit when you don't like how things are going. Unless things have changed radically, when you enlist you're signing up for 3,6 or even 8 years of service with very little recourse for getting out (without messing up your career and maybe even your life).

I'm sure for a lot of people working in the military is just a job. It's a luxury to choose jobs based on personal politics and a lot of people can't afford that now.

restingboredface ,

Yeah I know. Coming from military parents, I'm trying to not judge people too much since i know theres amazing people who serve, but I agree there's strong maga bro energy in the military and it sucks.

restingboredface ,

I'm on the market now and I can confirm the job market is indeed fucked. Especially for anyone location restricted or wanting remote work.

restingboredface ,

Yeah. I've been looking in analytics and it's awful. Any remote job on linked in gets over 200 applications ("people who clicked 'Apply'") in the first day. If you see a posting more than a day out it's very likely to have more than 1000 applications (I've seen as much as 4500).

I emailed a recruiter about a posting recently when the job page on the company site was throwing an error. I told her about the error and asked if the job was real/still available. She said she'd gotten over 500 applications within a few hours of listing it and shut down the posting because she was overwhelmed. I think that's the norm now.

This is where i see additional problems. Govt or no, Aetna should have been way more diligent in addressing any requests for info, and in providing more than what was explicitly requested they are also committing a HIPAA violation. Any counsel for Aetna should have been well aware of the risk of sending health records out and been very, very specific on what was to be sent and not to avoid a compliance issue.

If i was on Mangione's legal team I'd be preparing a civil case and HIPAA violation claim against Aetna in addition to seeking removal of the prosecutors involved. (I'm not a lawyer but worked in health insurance for several years managing patient data.)
