What kind of mic is that? Do you connect it to a sound interface (like p2 plug), or does it have its own interface (like usb-c)? If the first case, have you tried connecting a different mic to the same interface, just to rule out any possible hardware problem? Have you tried the same machine, but with another os, just to check if it's specific a problem with mint?
You can try another os in a live usb environment, without installing. It's important so you can be sure it's not something in the hardware. I once had some problem with noise, and it took me years to find the cause. I even bought a usb sound card to be able to use a mic. In the end, it was a problem in the power source generating interference (probably along with poor isolation).
In the software side, have you tried using alsamixer or a similar tool to 1- mute everything not related to the mic and the output 2 - lower the mic volume (high mic volume can generate noise)? It's also worth checking if you have conflicting sound servers or something like that. Have you installed anything related to sound, or are you using the defaults?
I believe we never had all the social progress we believed to have. Many people were just "restricting themselves" to conform with the rules, and now they feel comfortable enough to show what they really think about things...
Exactly. All that and much more. For a brief moment of my existence, I felt like a normal person in a world made for people like me. Then, it all slowly fade away and I became the weird person again...
Panel 1. A serene parc outside the University of Magic under the great teapot moonshine. The gothic sorceress and her blond elf new friend, and a magician, are all sitting and chatting, smiling around a little fire. All the little group don't have their AI (Avian Intelligence) Parrots and have books, sketchbook, a knitting kit, and sit under a banner: "The NO AI Club". In the background, the headmaster walks with a lantern with his AI Parrot flying near his shoulder is shocked at the small club.
Panel 2. Shot on the headmaster, in anger, his face red with indignation:
> Headmaster: "Why don't you have your Avian Intelligence with you? It's the future! You can't stop it!"
Panel 3. The Gothic Sorceress turns around, holding her arm out like a weapon towards the headmaster, and casts a spell, emitting a magical light from her fingers.
> Gothic sorceress: "Muteo!"
Panel 4. The same view angle as in panel 1, the gothic sorceress smirks and she is proud of herself. The headmaster continues to scream at them in distance, but his speech bubble now only has a 'mute icon' in it.
> Gothic sorceress: "*Can't stop it?* Please, that was super easy!"
After having 2 microwaves barely lasting more than a year in sequence, I decided no never have one again and rely on a small electric oven. It's not the same, but it's also great to use and it's lasting 5 years so far. I don't even miss a microwave anymore

Maybe we underestimate people a bit. The assholes tend to be more impacting to us, but most people aren't like that, and we tend not to notice the several neutral or good interactions the same way.
We all know the modern complaint: movie sound sucks now unless you have a high-end sound system. Frantically turning down the volume after turning it up to hear the dialogue only to need to turn it up again can be frustrating. Now, this doesn't solve the underlying problem, but why not have a "Volume A" and "Volume B" you can ...
I once had a problem because the sata mode was set by default to some weird mode that only windows would work on, so I had to change it to ahci. Might be worth checking for it in the bios/uefi menu.

Getting information from the internet can be sometimes more confusing than helpful, so I will try to be short and not send you far away
There's no need to switch devices. One of the great things of open source is that it's more efficient and won't do planned obsolescence on your hardware. Try it, and you will be amazed to what your "old" laptop and phone are truly capable of.
Distrohopping happens to some people, but part of it is a meme. If you like the one you're using, it's fine, no need to try anything else, unless you want and have time to experiment new ones. It's up to you
The distros you mentioned are fine. I'd recommend the one you feel more familiar with. The proprietary elements are usually minor things and can be avoided. It's not something to be worried
For the phone, ghapheneos might be the "gold standard", but /e/os is great too. You can use it with peace of mind if it's available to your device. If it's not available, lineageos can be another nice option
You can backup your data preferably to an external device, install the os in your laptop's internal storage, then copy things to it
My advice is to not overthink it. Try what you feel comfortable with, make the change in steps, instead of all at once, so you can get used to, and enjoy the freedom
Car drivers love to criticize cyclists, but they don't realize they're the real aggressors in traffic. They both do most of the bad behaviors, and have the greater damage potential
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other one is green. In this one, Blue and Green are sitting down while facing each other. Green: You've got yogurt on your chin. Blue: Do I? Blue leans back cautiously as Green leans towards him eagerly. Green: Can I kiss it away? Blue: No. Blue keeps leaning back as Green keeps leaning forward, stretching further than should be physically possible. Green: Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease? Blue: No. Stretching out to almost twice the length of their regular bodies, Blue frowns while Green still stares eagerly at him, leaning forward as much as Blue leans back. Blue: I am not going to let you lick my face. Green: Why not?
So... does that mean the fediverse model has moderation limitations? In case it grew to become mainstream, how could we deal with automated new accounts posting biased content?
Well... I use it. I find it faster to use than the right click gesture in the touchpad and the touchpad's buttons are awful to press, so I use the keyboard button and navigate with the touchpad
It's totally worth it. We can underestimate how much impact our small local groups can have, but they're essential to build strong communities. It's also much easier for people to switch to alternatives when in groups.
