We've recently seen serious spam attacks against Matrix, so we're introducing Policy Servers to recommend whether servers should accept or discard events before they get synced to clients. If your server participates in public rooms, see https://matrix.org/blog/2025/04/introducing-policy-servers/ to keep it safe.

We're facing down a war of the chat apps, and unfortunately it looks like the closed-ecosystem RCS and developer-hostile PII-gathering centralized Signal and WhatsApp are winning. The open ecosystems can't win if we're all infighting.

I'm still curious what MIMI is coming up with. Last I checked it was pretty dominated by Matrix.

@blake if it's any consolation, we haven't been able to invest much time in it recently. also, please consider that Matrix may not be the enemy here?

I don't know the tech specifics as to why it's happening but I'm afraid I'm gonna have to uninstall all the @matrix apps from my devices once again. This is not the first time this happened.

There's a wave of spammers that notify all the users in a room with some awful images, both of gruesome deaths and CP.

Happened twice today, in the @archlinux room and @thunderbird as well.

Why I can only see this shit happening on Matrix, I wonder? How does moderation work in there?

@element

matrix ,

@mauro we're working on countermeasures; the reason it happens is the same reason email has spam: there's no central point to filter abusive content. @archlinux @thunderbird @element

Had to leave @librewolf Matrix group due to it getting spammed & people participating in this group getting invite spam including myself.

Apparently there is no option to counter this in @element or in the @matrix specs? Maybe it could be a bit less annoying if the room was invite only?

Anyways, I'm not willing to deal with this abuse & my only option was to leave this room for now. Pretty sad & angry about this type of behaviour still happening.

matrix ,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@BjornW @librewolf @element We've noticed that spam wave and are sorry to see it. Where accounts are registered on Matrix.org, we've been taking action.

Other steps you can take: use the report button in your client to alert the server admin, or ping room admins and mods.

We also encourage communities to run a mod bot, like Draupnir or Mjolnir, participate in things like Community Moderation Effort, and deputize trusted community members as mods for more round the clock coverage.

It’s incredibly sad that we’ve lost the open, federated team chat space to —where the only viable server isn’t open source, it’s debatable whether the underlying standard is truly open, and the most charitable thing I’ve heard about the UX is that it’s 'OK.'

matrix ,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

Synapse is entirely viable and FOSS under AGPL. The standard is indeed truly open, despite the FUD. Protocols don't have UX, but just as Conversations has great UX for XMPP, there are several clients which have great UX for Matrix. Perhaps focus on improving XMPP rather than complaining about Matrix? 😘

After careful consideration I came to the conclusion that it makes no sense to keep the session export/import feature, once the key backup export/import feature is in place.

After a long transition period no one came up with a use case which a session export/import covers that is not covered by just logging in on a new device and import the key backup.

If you have know a valid use case, please comment on this.

Otherwise the key backup export/import will superset it in the next version

I tried Element X Android for once again after talking about it at . It feels nice because the room synchronization is so much faster than with Element. I guess I could use it even without supporting threaded replies or URL previews for links. Absolutely do not care about voice calls. But without Spaces to explore and organize rooms, something seems to be missing. I also miss some settings, like seeing other active sessions. Overall still unsure if I want to make the switch.

My call for European governments to retain at least a core IT/communication/email/file capability that is independent of US clouds. @burakemir @bert_hubert The ridiculous thing on this is that funding for Matrix from govts is still incredibly small (and not sustainable) thanks to the freerider effect (“why would we pay subscription for something that’s free?”), while they continue to pump huge amounts of € to proprietary US SaaS platforms. ZenDiS and Sweden get it right, but they can’t shoulder it all. We urgently need help.
