@dansup @koen @shlee Mattermost is getting more and more fanatical in nagging users to get a commercial version...

@dansup @koen @shlee We don't use that either, although we've used Mattermost for years in our company.

But Matrix offers so much more, including E2EE. No wonder it's been gaining popularity among organisations that need security and autonomy:

@hans@procolix.social avatar

@tante You make several good points. The protocol is complicated, there is as yet not app for phones that does everything you want/need and you will run into problems every now and then.

But... No new technology is without its problems and growing pains. If you have followed the discussions of the past few years, you know why development may not go as quick as we'd want, and why some issues aren't Element.io's highest priority.

The servers I've created and used in the past 7 years, including my own private server that's been online for those 7 years and in daily use, work. It takes some effort to configure the whole kit-n-kaboodle, but I think it's worth it.

Non-techies may want to wait a while before venturing into the world of Matrix, although they could do really well if someone with a decent level of knowledge helps them. I try to fulfill that role, both private and professionally.

Trump made me care soo much more about this "client list" and all around it because I personally have a super strong feeling Donny himself is somewhere on thre

Don't get me wrong, I ALWAYS wanna see "people" lik Epstein locked up on the bottom of the ocean but I also wanna drag down everyone with him who had anything to do with it

    I hate that you can't link to a Mastodon post without it taking you a different server. It's nuts that those links aren't swizzed on the sever. Always taking me to a different server that I'm not logged into is the Achilles heal of Mastodon. Non-tech users are completely confused by this. It's not their fault, it's Mastodon's fault. I know it's not easy to fix, but if Mastodon wanted to fix one thing keep new users, this is it.

    hans ,
    @hans@procolix.social avatar

    @grumpygamer Not sure why that would be an Achilles heel...

    Linking to other places is the foundation of the Web, it's what started (almost) all of it.

    It's the fact that people nowadays are used to referring to whatever is on the server they know that may be such a heel: people tend to see their small environment as "the world".

    The "fix" you suggest would mean admins would need huge amounts of disk space to store incredible quantities of data that's already available elsewhere.

    What's the problem with linking to another server?
