Looking back on that era, one interesting difference is that all the information was simply presented. If something bad happened it was related in full and everyone was along for the ride. Now all corporate space reporting is replete with marketing boosters and if something goes wrong they cut the feed.

Numerous reports lately of using their default "Discover" feed to promote right wing accounts and shadow ban progressive users. And yet, progressives continue to flock to this centralized, VC funded, tech bro platform 🤷

We have the opportunity to create a better public social media ecosystem, but only if we together make better choices.

Younger family member who works for a big tech company is here for the holidays. He is working everyday finishing up writing end of year peer review evaluations. Apparently everyone at the company has to generate 30+ extensive evaluations of their coworkers. This is done using a special version of ChatGPT which cranks our long beautifully worded reviews based on a few prompts. These then go to the respective managers who use ChatGPT to summarize the results for each employee. Seriously 🤦‍♂️

News: Waymo robot taxis fail to manage SF power outage causing widespread gridlock

https://missionlocal.org/2025/12/sf-waymo-halts-service-blackout/

The question we should be asking is what are the penalties for creating such a citywide menace?

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

It's early days, and there will certainly be some detailed analysis, but at this point it seems clear that these cars are too stupid to deal with widespread traffic lights being out. Unlike human drivers they do not know how to adapt to a non-standard situation. As a result we now have a situation where our public infrastructure is completely clogged in the event of a power outage. Is this acceptable? What dangers does this create? What happens when there are even more of them?

mastodonmigration OP ,

What if the blackout had been caused by a big earthquake, and a big fire ensued, and emergency services were unable to get anywhere because all the major intersections are clogged with brain dead Waymos.

Used to go to bed by thinking about some moon, planet or other astronomy subject and searching for a good lecture by typing the name of the subject followed by the word 'lecture'.

Usually there were a couple short basic videos, but also experts with hour plus long technical presentations. Those are all gone now. Replaced by absurd AI bullshit slop videos that can't even pronounce technical terms correctly. It's all garbage.

Even if you already assume that Trump is Putin’s toady, doing his bidding at every turn, the details of their so-called “peace plan” must shock you. It sells out not only Ukraine but all of Europe. And it is crafted to shift billions of dollars into the pockets of shady oligarchs.

As always, Anne Applebaum does a great job of reporting here. But it is really important to include that this 'plan' is not going anywhere. European officials have already called it a non-starter.

What is really interesting, as spelled out in this excellent piece by Phillips Obrien is how the US has systematically undermined its influence through disembling and failure to live up to commitments. And Europeans are finally getting the measure of these guys.

Trump has now set a deadline for Thursday next week, where he demands Ukraine signs an agreement to meet Putin’s demands:

— No NATO membership
— A reduction of its military to just 600,000 troops
— Accepting the loss of Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea, and most of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia
— Forcing Ukrainian elections within 100 days

While Russia will
— Reenter the G8
— Have all sanctions lifted

I can, I think, understand why Mozilla wants to centre Firefox around AI.

If it wants to appeal to an AI-using userbase, perhaps that make sense.

And perhaps that prize is sufficient to risk alienating some of their existing and future userbase, who do not want those features.

I wonder what the added complexity or cost would be for Mozilla, to have a version with AI and a version without AI. Would it be worth it for them, I wonder.

    How to quit Home Depot.

So, Home Depot is a terrible company, but you think you have no option. It's not true. First, there's Lowe's, which is much better. But, shopping local is also much easier than you think. Ace Hardware stores are locally owned, and the discounts from Ace Rewards add up fast. Lumber yards have better materials and free or low cost delivery. Plumbing and electrical supply stores normally used by contractors are great. Give it a try, dump Home Depot. You'll be glad you did.

Enjoyed reading The Atlantic's take on the highly incestuous and circular investments that are powering AI companies as they scrape and scrounge for more data centers. Or, why all this AI investment promises to be a lose/lose for everyone but the super rich. Tranches. Packaging and repackaging risky data center debt into financial instruments that people can buy or sell. Does any of this sound remotely familiar?

"Boom and bust can feel like two sides of the same coin: Consider also that if AI companies deliver on their massive investments, it would likely mean producing a technology so capable and revolutionary that it wipes out countless jobs and sends an unprecedented shock wave through the global economy before humans have time to adapt. (Perhaps we will be unable to adapt at all.) If they fail, there will likely be unprecedented financial turmoil as well."
