Blast from the past!

Picture 1: An old photo from 1908 showing the street Torvegade in the city of Vejle, where I live.

Your occasional reminders:

  1. Do you have backups, do they work, have you tested them with a restore?

  2. Is your body being weird? chase that up if you haven't.

  3. Remove the batteries from your old stored devices. They all leak except the ones that don't and you won't know which until they do.

  4. Check your Quad-G5 liquid cooling systems in storage for leaks.

A personal share about some realisations I’ve had: I am taking stock of something that I’ve been told many times, but never actually believed…

I am apparently great at researching topics, I go very deep and even digest a lot of up-to-date scientific and technical information rather well.

I do this much more than the average person, and it is likely because I’m autistic, with a healthy dose of ADHD hyperfixation thrown into the mix!

What does being neurodivergent have to do with this? Well, I hate unexpected things because I cannot cope well with them so I research heavily in advance of something new to empower me. I also don’t fully understand superficial explanations of things like NT folk seem to. If anything, superficial explanations leave me much more confused than no explanations at all, so I go deep to learn about them instead. Oh, and I also find enjoyment in learning, generally, about science and technology, and it plays to my strengths.

However… there is a specific aspect to being like this that I hadn’t considered until now.

I think I intimidate some medical professionals. 😶 I do not mean to AT ALL. I actually assume they have at least the same knowledge if not much better because they’re the experts, not me. This assumption is part of the problem. I seem to get disappointed in conversations with them because I can’t understand why they would talk about out-of-date ideas or they wouldn’t know about and understand a major recent break through in something relevant. I think this is causing tension in my conversations with them.

What to do? I think I need to broach conversations like these with an open mind about the level of knowledge of the experts I speak with. I am holding them to a standard that they may not be able to achieve - e.g. why would a generalist like a GP spend their time researching one, single complex medical condition and know the latest published science about it? Some may know about it, sure, most would not. Also, when speaking with a non-medical member of staff who specialises in my medical condition, I need to remember they might not be able to read and digest the medical research like I seem to be able to.

I am not an expert like either of these people - but I seem to come with my own knowledge or skills that they do not, and that is REALLY surprising to me.

But I must remember this - for better conversations AND to give myself credit for all I do to seek a better quality of life for myself. I always assume that what I know will be out-of-date or incorrect in some way because these medical-related skills are only very recent skills for me, a forty-something-year-old person!

I hope I can keep sharing the benefits of these skills so that others with similar health challenges can benefit too. Without a doubt a lot of this came from doing my recent undergraduate degree that included many human biology topics. But I am still not an expert and not medically trained. So it is rather like all this is a special interest, except it’s driven more by necessity than joy… even if I do find enjoyment along the way, especially in the form of hope for my future. I’d much rather be doing other things with my time, but hope keeps me going while I have a chronic illness that holds me back.

Also: I HIGHLY suspect I’m not the only chronically ill person who has developed some great knowledge / skills in this way and experienced these challenges, neurodivergent or not. I’d be really interested to hear of others’ experiences and tips about how to navigate the disappointments and keep conversations tension-free! 😅

This is the kind of headline that makes me so disgusted with journalism right now: "After six months in ICE custody, Charlotte woman chooses voluntary removal to Honduras" --

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 602 , Saturday 21/06/2025

Saturday started much earlier than I anticipated - I had a very late night last night & expected to sleep until at least 07:30. However my body clock seems to be set at 06:30 ish at the moment for some reason.

It’s been a stonkingly hot day today - so I’ve hidden away inside & tried not to melt!

I did think of something deep & meaningful to write about earlier but the heat haze has driven it out of my mind!

Had a fried chicken takeaway for tea accompanying ‘The Sum of All Fears’ a movie that I still enjoy - but then I like most movies that have Morgan Freeman in them!

Mrs S has bought strawberries which she has strongly hinted that she wants me to prepare with some ice-cream for dessert tomorrow night. I also have to prepare a salad it seems.

    Final Thoughts.

My brain is currently melting in the heat & any deep & philosophical thoughts have drained away like so much melted ice-cream!

Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

I have posted this before, but with the new input of people, it seems time to post it again. Although, edited somewhat from the previous post.

Autism is a neurological difference. We think and process differently. We just don't work in the same ways as others. Most of us, growing up, are more than aware of this, that we are different. But not necessarily why, or to what degree. We just recognise that we are. But, this isn't exactly something that can be discussed. Often the feeling is nebulous at best, other times it can feel embarrassing and far too personal. But in any case, for most of us trying to talk about things like this, especially as children, never ended up being a particularly safe or wise choice.

So instead, we buried the feelings deeply and tried to get on with life as best we could. This was normally done through learning to mask and in avoiding as much as possible those situations where our difference was made painfully noticeable. In fact, many of us get so good at this that we wandered for years, or even decades, through life without ever reaching the understanding that we could be autistic.

But when we do reach this stage, it involves a process of coming to terms with it and understanding what it means. It requires months, often years, of research to come to terms with and to overcome the false stereotypes and ableism that many of us carry. This is what is called self-diagnosis and sometimes it is as far as we go. For many of us it is enough, or we have reached a point in our lives where getting an official diagnosis is not worth it, or even possible. Not all countries support it. Also, many systems, whether on purpose or not, make it all but impossible for people over a certain age, or people of colour, or female presenting, to be able to get officially diagnosed. Or, in many places, it is simply too prohibitively expensive to even try.

This is why most autistic spaces actively welcome the self-diagnosed. Or those exploring the possibility of it, or who are maybe already on the path to becoming self-diagnosed. Because we know that this is a path that many of us have had to travel. That other options are not always available, or even possible. It's also why, not being autistic enough, or not wanting to take up space until officially diagnosed, or even just being curious and wondering, but not wanting to intrude, are not barriers to joining our spaces. The spaces are here for all of you, it is, in part at least, the reason why they are here.

The ActuallyAutistic hashtag and group are clear examples of this. They were created only to separate those who are autistic, either because of official or self-diagnosis and those who may be just thinking, or even wondering whether they are, from the voices of the parents and caregivers of autistics and the so-called experts, who are themselves not autistic and who might otherwise speak over us. They are not there to separate us, but simply to allow us a safe space within which to explore and talk, whether that turns out to mean that you are autistic, or not.

Take for example the following exchange:

"A (to passerby): I am out of gas.
B: There is a gas station 'round the corner.

Here, B does not say, but conversationally implicates, that the gas station is open..."

They are totally oblivious to the fact that A conversationally implicated he was looking for a gas starion!

English: uses the same word for

    • I love my parents
    • I love cheese
    • I love my partner
    • I love my children

and there better be vastly different meanings here!

Oddly enough, I danced to one of their songs at my wedding. Does anyone else have spins/hyperfocuses that come and go like that? (I don't know the best term for this but I like how spin sounds.)

Also I either listen to everything in my music collection (Limp Bizket right after some Raffi, heading into Barenaked Ladies followed by Lifa, into 4 Non-Blondes, into some Elvis or maybe the Supremes or Temptations, with some chiptunes after that)

Or a single track or album on repeat for a few days 😅

I’m sorry but I just do not understand this obsession people collectively seem to have with “positivity”.

    I really don’t.

The way people seem to talk about it increasingly feels puritanical, like it’s a morally superior position to hold.

    When it’s not????

Emotions are morally neutral last time I checked.

So I just feel confused why there is so much focus on it when it’s just one out of a bajillion emotions??

I think you've hit the nail on the head here.

Criticism is morally neutral. Emotions are morally neutral.

What choices and actions we make after the emotions are where morals enter into it! (And also why people fall into the toxic versions of positivity and negativity)

Makes me think about the parable of the optimist and the pessimist who both wanted to inherit the throne from their father...

@Zumbador @marytzu @tsukkitsune @ScribblingOn actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe icon ActuallyAutistic group they toured the kingdom and the optimist saw only the good and ignored the bad, but the pessimist pointed to all the problems.

At the end the pessimist asked the optimist to close his eyes and when he did the pessimist ran him through with a sword, because the optimist wasn't looking for anything bad.

The irony here of course is that one can look at the bad, be critical and aware of them and still have hope for a brighter future

Since three things are a thing and since I'm weird and have my own take on this. Three things I have noticed since joining Mastodon.

That half the posts I see are clearly an incantation of some sort in some strange techno-speech, that I can't even begin to understand, but can only hope aren't being aimed at me.

The incredible care and kindness that a community of seriously disturbed weirdos and degenerates are capable of spreading, without any agenda or desire for personal gain, that I have never experienced anywhere else.

The sheer wonder and joy and no small amount of horror, of being welcomed into the community here and finding the acceptance and respect and sheer fact that I am finally being seen, that I have never experienced, ever.

Asking my fellow actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe icon ActuallyAutistic group friends:

Several months ago, I bought some headphones for about 70€. Sound quality is good, they're comfortable on/around the ears. I used to wear them in noisy surroundings.

Reading about ANC headphones here, I got curious if this could help me improve the conditions. So, I searched for suitable headphones and found out that mine actually are ANC 😆

Today, I tried the ANC at church and it was so.much.better.! But it feels a bit strange inside my ears.

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @bhawthorne @notears actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe icon ActuallyAutistic group I've got the link aware https://isotunes.com/products/isotunes-link-aware and the xtra 2.0 (they had a discount on, which made me get them 😅)

Weirdly the xtra small ear tips (white core) feel larger than the small (green) ones did.

The aware are more comfortable for my head size - I've worn them for hours just fine. The xtra I use when I've got a welding helmet on or just need to jam some quiet in my ears 😅
