At an electronic music open night, we're 25 minutes late and the first act is still setting up... This might why they're first as it's supposed to be 15 minutes between acts.

kauer ,
@kauer@aus.social avatar

@static my experience of amateur electronic music is that setting up IS the performance. Or at least 50% of it.

Oh that's fun.

Website for a nearby locality with events and things. It complains I have an ad-blocker on, which I don't really. My browser defaults to blocking trackers, and I have third-party cookies disabled, too.

But I don't know what it's "detecting". If I turn off the tracker blocking and enable third-party cookies (in a private window, natch), it still thinks I have an ad-blocker enabled!

kauer ,
@kauer@aus.social avatar

@static tell the website owners. Everyone uses ad blockers these days, and more and more people just leave, never to return, if a website demands that they disable their ad blocker.

So I imagine they would appreciate knowing.

From your description it sounds as if "turn off your ad blocker" may be a generic response the lots if different things - for example, if you turn off scripts, a lot of captchas won't work, and that might well be what's happening here.

kauer ,
@kauer@aus.social avatar

@static Bummer. If it were me (and I do realise it's not :-) ) I would drop them, tell them why, and never visit the page again.

Requiring ad blockers to be disabled is blackmail.

Is it any wonder that the US becomes increasingly divided?

Here is MAGA influencer Laura Loomer suggesting to her 1.8 million followers, that the gun used to kill Charlie Kirk might have been provided by a "Trans terror cell".

This is false.

According to the investigation, the rifle used by accused killer Tyler Robinson, used to be his granddad's and was given to him by his own dad, a registered Republican voter.

And obviously, "Trans terror cells" do not exist outside Loomers imagination.

kauer ,
@kauer@aus.social avatar

@randahl There are lies enough in that ghastly post from that ghastly Loomer without inventing one.

She did NOT say that the gun was provided by a "trans terror cell". She floated the idea that it might have been.

If you had said "suggesting to her 1.8 million followers that the gun [...] might have been provided by" you would have been 100% accurate.

As it stands, people can say "look at the lies they put in her mouth! She never said that!" ... leaving you with no leg to stand on and casting the rest of your statements into doubt.

The response to lies must be impeccable truth.

No, inheritance tax isn't a double tax on your already taxed, hard earned money. You're dead. You don't pay it. It's paid, to all intents and purposes, by the people receiving the inheritance, who absolutely did not earn it, and don't deserve a massive tax free windfall.

@slevelt vinylrecords@a.gup.pe icon VinylRecords group One of my all-time favourite albums. A time capsule with "TV-Glotzer", a fantastically feminist couple of songs in "Unbeschreiblich weiblich" and "Pank". Most of her later stuff was somehow less good (to me), except for "Wir leben immer noch". I did a translation of that one which immediately got posted without attribution on numerous lyrics sites, grrr.

the soundtrack to the prep for our move included the Jam’s song That’s Entertainment (courtesy of its use in a recent Guy Ritchie movie), so I’ve been looking for this since we landed in . Fitzroy vintage store haul today! 🥳🎵

Interest in LibreOffice, the open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, is on the rise, with weekly downloads of its software package close to 1 million a week as users look to avoid subscription costs. That’s the highest download number since 2023. It works on Linux, macOS, Windows and Unix like systems. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3840480/libreoffice-downloads-on-the-rise-as-users-look-to-avoid-subscription-costs.html

kauer ,
@kauer@aus.social avatar

@Daojoan This is not about the economy. They don't care about the economy. They don't care about people. They don't care about norms, conventions or the law.

And they are not stupid! They just have objectives that are so far from what normal sane people have that their actions make no sense through that lens.

Start seeing these actions through the lens of destruction, disruption, repression and the acquisition of money, territory and power.

Thinking they are stupid - instead of bad, criminal and dangerous - is to underestimate them; and that helps them win.

This is a long shot, but I wonder if someone knows this book?

It's science fiction (I want to say cyberpunk?) and all I can remember about it is that it had something to do with water purification, and there was a group of individuals who had been affected by some event or accident and it had led to them losing limbs, so they wore prosthetics.

The conversation I remember was between two characters, one of whom used prosthetics, and who I think was trying to sabotage the water purification?

I would have read it a good ten years ago, at least. I know this is super vague but hopefully there's enough there to ring a bell for someone?!
