As a kid, I learned English from English language cartoons on FilmNet. I learned from German TV shows. My passion for Swedish crime series taught me Swedish.

But now, the largest tv medium of our time, YouTube, has begun auto-translating everything. Future generations will not be exposed to foreign languages and be inspired to take an interest.

There was no public review of this, no democratic vote. One company just decided to turn foreign cultures off and make the world dumber.

For profit.

@randahl On the flip side, subtitles on foreign films and tv-shows also helped us learn foreign languages. When I grew up, Norwegian children's shows on Swedish public service TV – like the amazing adventures of Brødrene Dahl – were subtitled. Today, they're dubbed, and the kids miss out on learning listening comprehension and vocabulary in another Scandi language.

The mineral agreement is not very specific, underlying agreements need to be worked out and approved, which will contain the important details. My impression Zelensky gives Trump a "win" but has limited the damage at this time.

@ml academicchatter@a.gup.pe icon AcademicChatter group Just installed it. The update fixed a Word file that was constantly crashing when inserting/editing citations. What's more, it's very fast at inserting citations and bibliography. The dark mode is great and I like the new item panel. Haven't encountered any bugs yet…

Should granting rights to an academic press to charge €200 for a copy of one's research monograph (hardcover, the crappy glued print-on-demand paperback is just €100) even be considered "publishing"?
