And the arrests of peaceful protestors under the Terrorism Act for expressing support for a proscribed organisation continue across the country....
It will be interested to see how the Judicial Review plays out, but the damage to the Labour Parry's democratic credentials (such as they were) is already done.
And while this is by far from the only reason the Party is losing support (and potential votes), it is certainly another unforced error....
@ChrisMayLA6 It is indeed an unforced error. Is it because of the anti-semitism scandal under Jeremy Corbyn, and they're terrified of doing anything which might leave them open to that line of attack? I thought they'd have better judgement.
Huh. My G5 has a PVT sticker... it's a prototype?!
A photo of an Apple Power Macintosh G5 quad cpu insides, with the big old liquid cooling system in pride of place. There's a radiator, heatsink, and some rubber tubing visible.
Can anyone tell me how many homes or small businesses one can power with 10GW (gigawatts)?
The reason I ask is that Nvidia is investing $100 billion in OpenAI to build a 10 GW data center with millions of GPUs. This is another way to fuck up our planet, and your electric bill will go up. But of course, they don’t care about such things. There is absolutely no bubble 🤬 The last time dot com happened, it took more than 15 years to recover from that mess.
@nixCraft It's enough to power about 8 million US homes. The average US home consumes about 10,500 kWh per year, which is 3.78e10 J. Divided by the number of seconds in a year, 3.15e7, gives 1200 W, which when divided into 10GW is 8.3 million.
236 days into Trump's presidency: "I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia"
Yes… Trump foolishly believed he could pressure Putin. That has cost thousands of Ukrainians their lives. And now he wants to make it seem like he is the one waiting for us, when in reality the entire world has been waiting for Trump to realise he was dead wrong about Putin.
A Reddit post titled "Wow... we've been burning money for 6 months." The post's author, u/me_z, describes how their company's OpenAI usage was costing around $1200 a month. They are using GPT-4 for simple tasks like extracting phone numbers, checking for profanity, reformatting JSON, and uppercasing text. The author ends by asking, "Am I an idiot? How much are you guys spending?"
A question: I’m seeing this in a BBC report. Do the British use miles when speaking like this, or is it some localization thing where it only shows this if you’re reading from America?
@nixCraft The article doesn't put a number on how much A.I. is contributing to price rises, but one of the things I hate about generative A.I. is how inefficient it is.
A suspected Russian interference attack targeting Ursula von der Leyen disabled GPS navigation services at a Bulgarian airport and forced the European Commission president’s plane to land using paper maps.
There are now three days left before Trump's deadline to Putin expires on Friday, and Trump will have to come up with a new excuse for doing nothing to help free Ukraine.
Two clowns get into a quarrel on social media, and now the US Navy has to reposition two nuclear subs because of it.
That is two times a crew of 134 sailors sailing round the world under water for days, because two manbabies disagree.
We must be living in the dumbest timeline.
Trump posting:
Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of
Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended
consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Enjoyable article by David Trotter on the history of golf, with shots at Trump's cheating and tacky tastes, plus today's "era of rampant techno-narcissism" (clubs, etc.), but also a lot of affection (if I'm reading Trotter correctly) for a game that I certainly love. https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/n13/david-trotter/putt-for-dough
At the White House, DNI Gabbard tells reporters a declassified House intelligence report contains “irrefutable evidence” Obama and his national security team directed an assessment they knew was false that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and they sought to "launch a coup” against Trump.
Was near my flat in my wheelchair a few months ago and a group of teenage girls ‘looked in my direction and said ‘If I was like that I’d kill myself’…
I ignored it .. what I wish I had said
‘The feeling’s mutual’ !
Trump explains the logic of his admin preparing to abandon Ukraine peace efforts:
“If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just gonna say you’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people, and we’re gonna just take a pass. But hopefully we won’t have to do that.”
Rubio en route to Saudi Arabia lays out Washington’s shuttle diplomacy philosophy. Whatever the U.S. can force on Kyiv, I doubt America has the leverage to compel Moscow to “do difficult things.” So long as Russia advances, a “military solution” potentially exists. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/10/us/politics/rubio-ukraine-russia.html
@kevinrothrock The signs are definitely there that Trump is pulling up the drawbridge. It's even worse than I imagined it would be when he won the election. I thought Trump would be more mercenary, but would sell arms to Ukraine.
Interesting that Polish officials say their Digital Affairs Ministry finances Ukraine’s Starlink operation at about $50 million per year, but Musk told Sikorski, "You pay a tiny fraction of the cost." I wonder how the total costs stack up.
@kevinrothrock $50 million per year isn't far off 1% of Starlink's estimated $7.8 billion revenue in 2024. That's not nothing. It has been estimated that Starlink will need to spend $5 billion or more every year to maintain their network of satellites which survive for only 5 years in low earth orbit.
@nixCraft I find it really worrying that this breaks the assumption that there is no security risk showing sensitive information onscreen to a fully authorized user.
(Plus the computational inefficiency of taking screenshots and turning them back into text.)
