I'm at Parkland College (for a few decades) helping folks navigate developmental courses/placements (but fighting the "hey, 5% of these folks could pass college so we should just get rid of developmental teaching" trends) dreaming of structured paths for building understanding and fluency instead of "I don't have time to teach you, here's a calculator."

I'm giving up on Google. None of the projects I've been working on (spout2pw, obs-pwvideo, libfunnel) are searchable, you get everything except for the actual project sites/repos. I put up a landing page and it briefly ranked and then disappeared.

DuckDuckGo has no issues. I'm switching.

How badly do you have to screw up search to not be able to search for an open source project and get, you know, the actual home page, repository, or documentation for that project at least somewhere in the first page of results? This is not hard...

How does one quantify a declining country's level of rot?

    I don't know, but here's one datapoint:

This thread is worth reading if you are a Google docs user.

Short version: When you export a document from Google Docs, Google replaces all your hyperlinks with links that allows Google to monitor the interactions of everyone you share your document with.

This hidden link replacement can potentially be used to build a model of your professional relations, where people who interact more with your content are considered a stronger relation.

At school* Friday morning, I was mildly disturbed to see one of the few masc-presenting people in the class arrive dressed as Harry Potter. Others were in various costumes. I waited through the guest speaker, then caught up with him at break.

I said, "this is unofficial, k? I'm speaking here as a trans woman in your community, not a lab instructor. This will not affect my evaluation of your work.

"But you do know that that gear is going to make for unhappy days for any trans or nonbinary person, and many other queer groups?"

He says, "Oh, yeah, I know about Rowling being TERF and such, but i thought since I do know that, it would be ok."

I looked at him dubiously. Social work student, mind.

"For me? That doesn't really mitigate you helping to fund my loss of rights. So...why not subvert it instead? You wanna do HP, first, don't buy any more merch. Second, you don't do Potter.

"You do Herman Grainger. A trans guy. Curly hair, haughty attitude, swot, top student vibe. Subvert it! Make it something JKR would hate. That's a powerful message of allyship, instead of building her anti-trans war chest."

He liked the idea. And I think got the deeper lesson, about being in a social justice field, you need to think about these things. If you had a trans client who came in on Hallowe'en, how are they going to feel seeing you wear merch that enriches someone who wants them not to exist?

Great teachable moment, and I think he got the idea. No further action needed, to me.

    • I'm working, as every autumn, at a local small college that has a Bachelor of Social Work program, as well as a summer intensive MSW program. I'm one of three long-time activists teaching community organising alongside a prof of social work. We 3 are the lab instructors. Class goal: plan and execute a social action. A rally, sit-in, whatever. Something disruptive. They get 10 weeks to plan what we each could do and have done in three days. It's a fun job. Radicalising young social workers. 💚

Being self-employed in the United States has its benefits, except maybe when it comes to getting healthcare coverage. For years, the only way we could find to get a halfway decent healthcare plan was to join WeWork of all places, just so we could qualify for their group coverage through TriNet. Then, after several years of paying >$32k a year (not counting huge deductibles) for us both to have insurance, we discovered we could qualify for much cheaper and just as good insurance by one of us taking a class once a year at a local university. Like 60 percent cheaper.

So you can imagine my annoyance when the IRS rejected our tax filing this year because somebody somewhere had claimed Obamacare benefits in our name. Not sure if this straight up fraud related, or a case of healthcare.gov representatives enrolling people without consent. But a little searching online shows this is not an uncommon problem. Good morning. 🌕🌖🌚

    9 October 2025

Snow Geese, and the Law of Kinship

I'm writing this morning from an undisclosed location on the outskirts of Houston, Texas. A big house on a lake. We’re staying with some in-laws for a few days—well, they’re my in-laws, and a couple of them are my wife’s in-laws. That’s how it goes with in-laws, I suppose. I think it’s the law.

Last night, a flock of snow geese descended just behind the house. I felt both thrilled and let down—thrilled by their arrival, let down by the darkness that kept my camera silent. They mingled quietly on the grass near the lake’s edge, like spectral guests at a moonlit gathering. Except for the honking. I don’t think ghosts honk. Do they?

I tried to get a photo, but the light refused to cooperate. I considered stepping beyond the small wrought iron fence to get closer, but something told me that was a bad idea. Snow geese are sizable creatures, and they’ve been known to go on the offensive—me thinks. It’s one of those lessons I learned the smart way: through someone else’s misfortune.

Yesterday morning, I dropped Charlie at the veterinarian’s office. It tugged at the heartstrings. He didn’t want to stay—propped himself up on my lap, tried to make a break for the door and the car. I’ll feel better when I pick him up in a few days.

The house is beginning to stir. Footsteps, voices, the subtle shift in atmosphere that signals coffee and quiet time are drawing to a close.

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” — Michael J. Fox

    Good morning. 🍊🍊🍊

    3 October 2025

I had a plumber come in yesterday to unstop our kitchen sink. He was a nice enough young man and did a good job, but the cost to get him to snake out the drain gave me sticker shock. It was nearly twice what it was the last time I called them. I imagined being told in an Eastern European accent "the price is the price." The plumbing company is the one I normally call, but the next time I need the sink unplugged I might consider calling somebody else, or not I'll have to wait and see how I feel at the time.

We're supposed to walk this morning but I'm again getting a late start. We may just do a few laps around the property today. One lap is roughly a quarter mile so I can get a little exercise in that way and Charlie stays off the leash when we stay here so he can run and jump or just get inquisitive about all of the surrounding scents. I'll need to dig out my waterproof hiking shoes; there is dew in the morning.

After that, I may tend to the bird feeders, because they don't tend to themselves. I get to feeling a little bad when I look out and there are birds just hanging around empty feeders while staring at the backdoor. You'd think that I'm exaggerating, which I may be, but it sure seems like that's what they do.

“The price is the price.” — Taken (film, 2008) — sovereign utterance from the Ministry of Unyielding Transactions

“But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world.” — E.B. White

Wouldn't it be great if, upon consuming a certain amount of food, I levelled up. Like got some kind of augment or special items. Or grew exponentially into a giant.
