Profile photo is me: white guy in a navy blue hoodie with buzzed brown hair & beard wearing rectangular black glasses & a white Draeger 1950 trifold N95 adorned with a magnetic Pride flag pin. Under it is a blue, non-latex, exercise loop wrapped from below chin to crown of head, containing the beard for a proper seal.

The excellent and freely distributable COVID Zine has been updated for 2026.
https://newlevant.com/COVIDzine

This is among the most concise and well cited sources for the current state of knowledge and tools. Even for well-informed people who already take strong precautions, there is still likely something new to be learned by giving it a read through.

Oh my fucking god. Oh my fucking god firefox what. What. Firefox now does a thing where when a tab makes a sound the tab GETS WIDER to accommodate the audio icon. So I'll be trying to read and the tab bar will just be slithering back and forth randomly for no reason at all. Firefox I have. I have severe issues with distracting motion in the corner of my eyes and this is the most neuroaggressive things I have ever seen a software package do

@steter @mcc I just tried it and the tab size still increases to accommodate a little speaker icon and shrinks again when the media is stopped.

@steter @mcc I found a fix that does work for Firefox changing tab sizes with the speaker icon.

Type about:config into the address bar, and tell it yes, you acknowledge the risks of making changes.
In the search bar on that page, type browser.tabs.tabMinWidth.
The current default is 76.
I set it to 100.
That was enough bigger to prevent the size changing when the speaker icon got added.

As long as you don't mind your tabs being a little wider all the time, this will keep them a constant size.

If your server is shutting down or isn't fitting your needs or you're otherwise looking to migrate to a new server, here's my two post thread of exact click-by-click steps to do so:

If you're trying to find a server to move to, I highly recommend checking out the @FediGarden site which is run by the person behind @FediTips as well:

These servers are small to medium sized with generally good moderation, and you can search them by topic.

Hey new people!

You don't have to use the official Mastodon apps, in fact you will probably have a lot more fun if you switch to a third party app. Third party apps tend to have better features with more work done on them.

Mastodon is built on open standards, so third party apps get equal access to Mastodon's features. If you're unsure where to start, here are a few reliable picks:

iPhone/iPad - Ice Cubes, Mona, Ivory

Android - Tusky, Fedilab, Tooot

@FediTips These are all great tools, but I would say that the PWA is worth including in Android recommendations. It's just the mobile site in a standalone app container.
In my opinion, it's what Mastodon's default app should be: all the same capability as mobile or desktop browsers but with support for notifications.

Here's my older post about the PWA, how to install it, and a workaround for using it on iOS while also getting notifications:
