An old Victorian bibliophile and geeky young boy in the same body. I've been on the Internet since the mid-'80s. I'm an old school tabletop roleplayer and game master. Grew up among the 0.001%, which is why I hate capitalism and bullies. But I love cats!

@FediTips Thanks! I'm not following them, but they're being boosted by an account I follow. That seems to be an automated thing; the account auto-boosts anything with certain hashtags.

I'd rather not mute the boosting account, but if the spamming account keeps showing up in my feed I'm going to mute them for sure!

ArgumentativeMonotheist I first encountered it in "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 1". It was used by the Science Fiction Writers of America to honor science fiction stories which predated the Hugo and Nebula.

Boucher was an outstanding critic, science fiction author, and mystery writer. In fact, the first major mystery convention, BoucherCon, is named after him.

He was also quite a religious man.

You might also like "The Devil's Day" (1980) by James Blish. He was another devout science fiction author who wrote some brilliant works that included aspects of religion.

By your logic if I had voted for Harris, I would be complicit in her agenda: the genocide of children in Gaza.

Besides, do you really think she wanted to win? She knew that supporting genocide was losing her the support of her base, but she stuck to it like glue anyway. I don't know why she had such a hard-on for dead and maimed children, but that was HER decision.

How can I find protests to attend in my area? Specifically the Boston-Providence area?

@Quasit@kolektiva.social avatar Quasit , to random

It occurs to me that I should possibly introduce myself in this new year.

I've been on Mastodon since 9/11/2000, but only started using it heavily over the past six months or so. Hashtags made a big improvement to my experience here.

I'm the last of the Boomers, almost literally. But I've been an early adopter when it comes to technology ever since college; I was on the internet back in 1986, and I created my first website in 1996. It's still up.

I'm a hardcore bibliophile. I grew up before the internet, and without much TV; my parents read to me all the time, and I learned to read by around two and a half years old. I've probably read more books than 99.9% of the human race.

When it comes to reading, my favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, humor, books for children and young adults, and books that have entered the public domain. But I'm fairly eclectic. I tend to prefer older books, and did even as a child.

I love to write, but my muse doesn't send me fiction or poetry anywhere NEAR as much as I'd like.

My memory is a bit freakish. I'm not eidetic, but apparently my memory is unusually good - particularly when it comes to books. That's made it easy for me to recommend books to others. Before I left Reddit I accumulated a file of recommendations that I'd made that includes nearly 1,000 books, and I still add to it when I can.

I have a huge amount of experience reading aloud, particularly to children. Not to boast, but it's something I'm very good at.

I love tabletop roleplaying, and have been running campaigns for over 40 years now. The games I run are based on literary worlds or my own imagination. The focus is generally characterization, exploration, and interaction rather than combat.

I'm a supertaster AND hypervigilant, thanks to an abusive upbringing. My senses of smell and taste are incredibly keen, and I tend to notice things more quickly than most. Except my hearing is starting to degrade a bit with age, sadly.

I'm shy and/or demisexual. A straight cis male. I should probably be on display in a museum!

As the single father of an adult son who takes after me to a frightening extent, right down to red hair, geekiness, bibliophilia, and atheism.

Lastly I'm an anti-capitalist. Very leftist, or more accurately extremely opposed to the entire political and economic system of capitalism. I grew up with the children of the 0.001%, and really loathe them all - from experience. I know how they think. I stand with working people and immigrants.

Wait, I forgot to mention: I love to laugh.

That should do it!

I can't help but wonder how those churches survive!

Quasit ,
@Quasit@kolektiva.social avatar

harrys_balzac IronBird

Reminds me of my uncle for some reason. He belonged to a tiny little church and dragged his wife into it as well. I used to say that he believed that he and the minister and possibly his wife were the only people who would be allowed into Heaven - and he wasn't too sure about his wife and the minister.

At his funeral his minister got up and gave quite a speech. In his southern drawl he invited us all to rush up to him, get on our knees, and accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.

I grabbed my father and my son fiercely to make sure they didn't go up in a spirit of comedy (my family has a strange sense of humor). Luckily I didn't have to struggle too hard. But everyone just sat there looking at the guy. My people are polite, but they aren't going to give up their own beliefs for ANYONE. Not when an entire nation tried to exterminate us for our religion!

(Although I should note that I'm a long-time atheist. But that was MY decision, no one else's.)

Okay, it seems to be the whole damned INTERNET that's slowed to a crawl today. Which brings to mind something unpleasant: Senator Joe Lieberman. I distinctly remembering that he insisted that the government have an "OFF" switch for the internet, and I'm sure that bill was passed. I'm sure the government will pull that switch the minute their power is really threatened by the people.

Which brings up another memory (my brain does that a lot): a very cheap box that used wifi and bluetooth (and whatever else was available) to be plugged in at your home. These boxes would form a mesh network that would interconnect, establishing an internet connection that wouldn't be subject to the whims of the big carriers and the government. I saw an article about it more than ten years ago; at the time I thought it was a brilliant idea. Of course nothing seems to have come of it.

I do know about the alternative mesh networks that are available, but I don't know much about them. If they're open-source, I suppose they'd be better than nothing...but last I checked, they formed their own network rather than connecting to the actual internet.

Look, I'm a prison abolitionist. But A) the fascist exception still applies to prisons; you can't treat nazis like normal people because they are not normal people and they very clearly and openly mean to destroy everything and everyone you love and also B) you have absolutely no intentions of abolishing the prisons anyway, and if you were we'd be having entirely different conversations.

I'll settle for prison, but I'm open to a rocketship to the sun, if I'm being quite honest here.

How does this end? And if you think about that question seriously, you'll realize that neither you, nor any of your sign-waving homies have an answer except "convince the nazis to cut it out."

Okay but I mean you libs (progressives included) DO realize you can do the exact same thing to the entire private sector, that you just did to Disney for Jimmy Kimmel, until they not only stop supporting and enabling the fascist agenda but actively start working against it, right? Newspapers, TV Stations, Tech companies, the list is almost endless, you just need to find creative ways to cost them money - which of course, the capitalists will claim is criminal.

Lol; our bunker buster bomb is good for 60 meters. Israel itself is saying Fordow is 90 meters underground.

You ain't getting that facility, without troops on the ground; and Israel knows that. They're literally inviting us into a ground war they don't have the army to fight, by telling Trump to do something stupid they know won't work.

In-fucking-credible.

Good point. And I'm hoping that Iran has made allowances for all possibilities, and has more secret underground facilities elsewhere.

I know liberals know their leaders are minions courting fascism and burning the world for capital, because every time I talk about the intrinsic relationship between fascism and the current (open) Pig Empire plan to keep boiling the planet no matter how many people everyone (including said "liberal" capitalist leaders) knows it will kill, they immediately want to argue with me about voting.

I don't bring up voting, they do. So it's not that they're ignorant; they're complicit.

I'm not here for fascists. Go bother someone else.

Not to be a grammar Nazi, but a mullah is an Islamic cleric. I think that the word you were looking for is "moolah", i. e. money.

Of course the ironic thing is that once they kill enough of the working class off civilization will collapse. At which point all their moolah will be nothing more than green wastepaper and discharged electrons in dead computers.

Our duty to the human race is to put an end to the ruling class before they kill us all.

@gerrymcgovern What's the time frame for a nuclear power plant to become safe for the environment? And what is that time frame if the plant isn't shut down properly? Do we really want to bet that our technological civilization will survive for all that time? The US military is already projecting the collapse of much of America's infrastructure within the next 20 years. Do we want to have a bunch of abandoned power plants contaminating the environment of our descendants?

Particularly considering that renewables are now more efficient and far safer?
