The most wonderful review of Nameless got posted yesterday, and I just have to share it:

"Zoe Wendler’s book, “Nameless”, is an intricately beautiful queer cyberpunk mystery. It starts simply enough; a murdered body broken down by nanites must be identified. But the murder and dissolution of this particular body is nothing simple, and the rabbit hole that question leads to is remarkably deep.

The world building in Wendler’s book is intricate, thinking through the questions and effects of introducing technologies like nanites to the world, including social, economic, and geopolitical effects, and the human costs and benefits such upheavals generate. The resulting world fits classic cyberpunk, producing a world twisted by technology that has its grim aspects, but does not dip into hopelessness, and in fact deliberately shows the importance of hope - and how hope survives and thrives - within grim societies. The book also shows its care in how it handles groups of people, including military veterans, those with disabilities, homeless people and people on the margins, and queer individuals. The queer aspects in particular are deftly handled; it shades plot and events, being integral without overwhelming, to the point that the book can provide non-queer individuals with a realistic portrait of the values, philosophy, and sociology of queer society.

Individual characters are handled deftly in the book. People-building is given the same care as world-building,with each person having their backgrounds and motivations; the effect of this is that no one is a one-dimensional hero or villain. Everyone has backstory, everyone has motivations, and it can be difficult to determine who the real villain of the story is - exactly what would be wanted from a murder mystery.

The plot… buckle up, because it is a wild ride. It ramps up quickly, it does not let up until the denouement, has multiple twists and turns, and it will leave you guessing until near the end. It’s an entertaining read, one you will be reluctant to put down once it starts.

I saw a job listing today for a professor position that's basically written for me. I would be the perfect candidate, I think--they want someone in Women's and Gender Studies with a focus on Gender, Embodiment, and Health Science to help with crossover courses for nursing students.

Like, c'mon!

How many gender studies folks have a deep publishing history on queer stuff, are in the peer-reviewed scholarship on nursing, with an emphasis on "teaching interdisciplinary courses in feminist science and health?" There can't be that many.

Unfortunately, I'm not really able to move, and I'm not ready to be on the academic job market in any case.

Still, that'd be a heckin' cool gig.

I would keep all the posting info, regardless. You never know how things are going to turn out, and maybe everything will be completely different in a year. Even if they hire someone, that someone may not work out and they'll be looking again.

At the very least, when you are ready, you will know the very first place to start. 😊

But holy heck ... for a match like that, even if I thought I couldn't apply, I'd still be thinking long and hard about ways I could try to!

Maybe at least be encouraged such a match is even theoretically possible? When it happens once, it can happen again. 😊

Five years ago today, I took my first dose of estrogen. A lot has changed since then, and no matter how hard I try to reproduce that original Day 1 picture exactly, I can never quite manage it.

Transition is magic. 💙♥️🤍♥️💙

The first one seems "This is who I want to be and I'm trying', the second is 'This is who I am and just look at me now!'

I am so glad you made it! 🎉

Lovely Peeps, I hope this is an easy question for you lot. 🙏

Does anyone know of a free video capture software? Something that will capture audio and video of a YT video, online lecture, or similar as it is playing.

I am specifically thinking of online lectures, and probably via Moodle, if that helps / makes a difference.

Audio/visual quality has to be reasonable, but the purpose is so I can record them when I have an internet connection, and play them back when I don't. (Which is at least half the time. 😬)

FWIW, Obsidian has a core plugin that will record audio - awesome! The quality isn't stellar (may be my system; it's pretty basic! 😄), but a quick test seems to be fine for my purpose. 🎉

However, I hope to find something that will record audio & video if possible.

Any ideas, you lovely brilliant peeps?

Thank you! 🙏

Dear Lovely Peeps,

I've been following Sharon Astyk for a very long time now on issues of Peak Oil, climate change, Riot for Austeriry (!! 😄 !!), sustainable living & food preservation, readiness prep, community, & so much more.

She is kind (in a no-nonsense way), she is clear-eyed & forthright, she is brilliant - & sometimes she is scary. (Sometimes one wants a little sugar-coating! 😳 )

If you don't know her, pls check out her ko-fi blog. This article in particular is good for suggestions on how to deal with possible upcoming ... excitement ... in her country.

Some things you may know, others you probably haven't thought of before.

https://ko-fi.com/post/How-Were-Preparing-for-This-Shutdown-G2G71M0SNN

If you haven't heard of her, there is a blog post all about her pinned to her profile.

If you are interested in any of the above topics, I encourage you to read through her posts. Most are US-centric, but she writes so much that is good generally.

Finally, a CW. I have been following her for decades & even I can't read all her posts. If something is too hard to read, STOP & get out. Skip to the next.

Sometimes she really doesn't sugarcoat. 😬 She's right - but it can be a lot. Protect your mental health.

OTOH, if you were friends IRL, you know she would always have your back. She is FIERCE. 🤩

In keeping with the running theme(s) of my TL today, she ends with

'Do something for your mental health & take some joy ... You are ok today. Tomorrow isn't here yet. You can do this'

This has very much been my experience too, as recently as within the last 24 hours and even as a small creator.

There are a lot of people out there who don't understand parasocial relationships, and they very much help the folks out to destroy us.

Please: consider the human.

I am so sorry this happened! And I am sorry I missed the thread, I really appreciate reading your work.

I don't respond much because what can I say? I can't contribute anything but 'Thank you, this was interesting & thought-provoking' sometimes, all I can do is keep learning.

But please know you are appreciated. 💛

And again, I am so sorry for you to experience anyone else making you feel any differently. 😔

So

What if my C's presentation next year was about the NSFW comics many trans people use to explore our gender when we're eggs? Like, their rhetoric, and how they reflect the framing of transness as inherently sexualized.

Friends on mastodon.social and mastodon.world: please please please consider moving to better instances. I'm getting very close to blocking your servers

Her_Doing ,
@Her_Doing@sunny.garden avatar

@RegGuy @dillyd

Try https://fedi.garden, "a small human-curated list of nice, well run servers on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. All of them have opted-in and promised to obey specific standards of reliability and responsible moderation."

You can choose by topic of interest, language, country, year founded, etc.

It would be a good place to start - good luck! 😊

@mfennvt @RegGuy @dillyd

Yes - the more the merrier! But not to me - it is not my project. 😄

Contact @FediTips for details.

(Also, they do a LOT in the Fediverse, so no pressure! but if you're able to toss a coin or two in their pot, it would be appreciated.)

And thank you! It is impossible to keep with new / good servers on your own, so people making suggestions is great, especially for smaller / more local / more niche instances! 🙏

We want everyone to be able to find their home. 😊

Good morning, Lovely Peeps! 🌻

A bit of fun from a few years ago. (Artwork unknown, but text by @ThisIsJimTait from Twitter)

You can only choose 3 potions & the effects are permanent. (Think carefully about this!)

A few creator clarifications:

Black includes "no facial hair at all" as an ideal beard for those people that is ideal for.

Purple is "anywhere with the facilities for planes to land, take off, & be maintained. You can take anything you are personally carrying. Meant so you can go to almost any major city, but not to just any building.

One thing I most like about this particular version is that it really does offer something for everyone.

Yes, some are meant to be funny, & some are definitely (in my mind) Monkey's Paw curses (!) - but most can be seen as poignant & deeply yearned for by the right person. 💛
