We are so lucky that now when we need to move away from American digital monopoly and control, that we have a wide range of very mature software to choose from across a lot of categories. That just makes it so strange that it's so difficult to actually get moving.

We don't have to rebuild everything from the ground up. Sure, we definitely want to invest in improving what's already there. Fund further development, add features that better suit our specific requirements. But we are far away from having to rebuild the entire tech stack from the ground up. It's a relatively cheap exercise, all things considered, and yet moving to something that gives EU digital independence is glacial.

We have an amazing foundation, and that's super fortunate. We just have to stop being complacent and make the final investment.

@thecasualcritic @flangey @brnrd @pluralistic It's the same thing in Denmark. Since 1984 we have had the Dankort, which is a cheap debit card for payment. Now stores are pushing people to use that over visa and MasterCard because it's much cheaper for them to use.

We also have mobile pay now, which I again believe is cheaper due to the lack of requirement for a physical terminal. All you need is a sticker with your QR code.

Looking at /e/OS. Lots of focus on privacy, degoogling, all good stuff. They have a compatibility check. Cool, let's see how my phone fares. I'm expecting a list of brands or something. What do I see instead?

Please use a Google browser or a derivative thereof. No Firefox. Dafuk? Surely they can't be serious!

  1. Fuldt touch control-panel.
  2. Når man tænder, så skal den bruge mellem 10 og 40 sekunder på at starte. Derefter skal man tænde igen!
  3. Der er en "hurtigt, nuke min mad i 30 sekunder"-knap. Er ovnen slukket, se pkt 2.
  4. Til tider når man trykker på start eller stop, så siger den bib, MEN GØR IKKE NOGET!
  5. Når man starter mikroen flasher skærmen i et sekund med "sæt din mad i ovnen" før den starter. What?

... Det er en ovn til 12.000kr, som vi dog fik til halv pris. Det var for dyrt.

As a software developer I know that creating working software is difficult. It's so easy to introduce a small bug somewhere and then nothing works. This may however contribute to how annoyed I get when software has obvious quality of life gaps that are just so incredibly obvious and not at all difficult to implement.

My Marantz receiver has HEOS. They're actually making quite a big deal out of it. HEOS is a thing that can stream music. If I put on music via HEOS, then it immediately starts playing. Great! Except for the tiny fact that it takes the receiver 8 seconds to turn on. So when I put on a track, when the receiver is off, then I'm missing the first 8 seconds of the track. Or rather, I did, until I added a Wiim (in a misunderstood attempt at getting Tidal to work properly, which it still doesn't). Now, when I start playing something on the Wiim, turns on the receiver, pauses the playback for 8 seconds, and then resumes the music.

This is obvious people!

    @fanden @simonjust Nu skal I ikke forgribe jer på tingenes gang! Nu er det black Friday. I morgen er det black weekend. På mandag er det Cyber Monday, tæt efterfulgt af Cyber Week. Så kommer juleudsalget, og først derefter kommer januarudsalget altså.

    @yiningkarlli Of course the mouth has no bearing on the plot, it just seems lazy. Having grown up with Pixar, the powerhouse of story telling and innovation, it makes me sad to see the same style year after year.

    The eye lick... I mention Disney because I know it from Tangled and Frozen 2, but at this point that is just super overused.

    @nixCraft It's completely mind blowing to me that people are not impressed by flame throwers. They are super impressive and they can light everything on fire in a spectacular show. That's why we installed them in the fridges, the toilets, the TVs and the fire extinguishers, asking regularly if people want to use them and adding a convenient button right where the user commonly interact with the products.

    Har fortsat med at se "Attack on titan" sammen med yngsten — næsten igennem første sæson. Vi er lidt udfordrede på at kun kunne se serien når vi er alene hjemme, men til gengæld kan vi køre det meste af en aften og nå 8-10 afsnit.

    Jeg vil nok altid have det svært med de superemotive indre monologer og den pompøse lommefilosofi, så der er omtrent 50% af seriens spilletid sat på vippen. Men den overordnede historie fungerer, også med den bizarre præmis at "monstrene" er gigantiske nudister.

    @fanden Cultural appropriate vs Cultural appreciation... Alt er efterhånden kulturel appropriation og forfærdeligt uden at nogen tager skade af det. Jeg så en definition på kulturel appropriation, som er, at man tager noget, der er helligt for en kultur, og på en eller anden måde kommercialiserer den.

    Så at tage en høvdings hellige fjerbeklædning og sælge som en del af et modefremstød: Appropriation.
    At gå med en mexikansk hat eller en japansk kimono fordi man synes de er seje: Appreciation.

    Og lad mig ikke komme ind på dreadlocks, som har været brugt af mange kulturer.

    @Daojoan All the player characters on the USA sever think that this, while super contrived and incredibly badly written, is adding some much needed excitement. They were playing on the USA server anyway for the almost infinite exploitability of NPCs if you make it through the eye of the needle.

    @_elena What is important to remember in this situation is that if you feel like your computer is slow or incapable, then it's not because it is Linux, but because it's being run off of a glorified mobile processor.

    I remember people complaining that $100 Android phones were bad compared to $1000 Apple phones. It's not the O/S, it's the hardware. :)

    I wanted to fix a :blender: bug, but ended up rewriting the code to be much shorter, faster, and work without bugs. Sometimes you have to look at the code, ask "wait what is this even trying to do?", and do it in a saner way, instead of trying to keep on patching upon the existing pile of code. https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/148783

    @Daojoan To me it's more akin to "This is an IoT appliance". Why the fuck would I want my fridge to connect to the internet? Well, you can change the temperature from your phone... WHY? (I would much have preferred that my very clever fridge showed the actual temperature, maybe even sounded an alarm if it deviated from the desired temperature, but no, it just shows the desired temperature on the door, EVERY TIME I open it!!)

    This app uses AI. WHY?!

    @Sxan@piefed.zip avatar Sxan Cyber I don't like smart locks because I don't trust them. I'm afraid someone is able to hack them. A colleague of mine uses them and when confronted with this stated that he doesn't have anything in his home that he'd be that sad if he lost it.

    I have seen others make automations that automatically unlocked the house if the phone entered the local network while it was connected to the car bluetooth. While that's convenient I don't want to automate security. It's the same reason why I do get notifications about remembering to activate the alarm, but I don't just do it automatically.

    AA5B So we got the best locks we could get from the supplier, which supposedly are hard to pick, cannot be picked and cannot be copied without a key card (not sure how that works). Our doors and windows are enforced. We had one person comment that he rarely saw houses that were this secure (but then he wasn't a security guy, just a buildings guy). On top of that we have cameras, an alarm system and fog canons.

    It would be convenient to have a smart lock, and I would love to be able to detect if doors are locked or open (Having this as a read-only thing would be perfect), but being a software guy I don't trust the lock to not be hacked or simply malfunction. The alarm system (ADC) is already obviously made by amateurs, but seems to get the job done...

    Overkill? Definitely! But my wife worked in insurance and is super coloured by the stories she's heard.

    My combined microwave / oven by AEG is by far the device I own with the worst user experience.

    When you want to use it, you can either turn it on, or hold a "microwave for 30 seconds" convenience button. No matter what you do though, it will turn on the oven (this takes 2-3 seconds) and then... Be off again. THEN you can repeat, and this time it will work. This is just terrible design on a whole other level! To make matters worse, if you just used the oven and it has reverted back to "super off", then it now takes about ten seconds to get it to turn on again.

    Ok. So... You manage to turn it on, and now press the microwave now button. It now asks you, for one second, to put your food inside the oven - and then it starts. This is useless and prevents you from tapping the +30s button.

    When the food is done it tells you so on the display. If you don't dismiss this message the oven remains on indefinitely.

    Whoever designed this should feel ashamed!

    @simonjust The big problem is that this isn't really something you can test before you buy an appliance like this. And it's not cheap either - I got it at half price, but list price is about 12.000DKK. This is something we use every day, and it's just so infuriatingly stupid. But it's not a problem for them. They got their money.

    I'm looking into adding a video doorbell and some security cameras and want to integrate with HA. I have some cameras that came with the house, but I don't think they will work. The system has been discontinued and I don't have the "base unit" that connects them. If there is a way to use them, I'd be happy to find out if they ...

    @fanden Hele den vestlige verden har efter anden verdenskrig lært den forkerte lektie. Det handler ikke om at vi skal være søde ved jøder. Altså, det skal vi naturligvis også, på lige fod med alle andre. Det handler om at folkemord og imperialisme er en dårlig ting. Så nu hvor det er jøder der praktiserer det, så står alle vestlige ledere og tysser på alle der kunne finde på at kritisere de stakkels jøder, for nu har vi jo lært, at det er synd for dem.

    Vi må ikke kritisere Israel, i fald vi kommer til at gentage anden verdenskrigs forfærdeligheder, mens Israel gentager anden verdenskrigs forfærdeligheder.

    Og nu, et halvt år efter den internationale domstol for rungende stilhed har dømt Israel for folkemord, og Israel kun har skruet op for varmen, går vestlige ledere - Mette Frederiksen f.eks. - stille frem, klør sig i skægget, og siger, at joh, Israel er da vist også gået lidt for vidt. Ikke? Må man sige det? Bliver nogen sure? Jo. Ja. De er gået for vidt. Puha. Det taler vi lige om.

    @farsinuce@feddit.dk avatar farsinuce Det vil ikke ændre noget. Det er, og har altid været sådan, at når noget nyt kommer, så flokkes 20-30 årige til det. Efter nogle år finder den ældre generation ud af, at det er smart, og begynder at bruge det. Det gør det ufedt for den yngre generation, der finder noget andet, og efterlader den ældre generation alene igen.

    Det kom lige op i en anden tråd, hvor meget energi Google mon bruger på, uopfordret at generere mere eller mindre forkerte "svar" for hver internetsøgning på deres platform. Det er jo mindblowing, så nyttesløst det er.

    Samtidig sidder jeg på et tog fra København som skal køre os henover Fyn. Vi har taget den billigste billet, som indebærer at vi skal skifte til regionaltog i Middelfart i stedet for Odense. Dvs, vi kører gennem vores endestation for så at køre tilbage dertil fra Middelfart. 🤔

    @fanden Og mens det er super irriterende for dig, er det måske ikke helt så spildfuldt når togene alligevel kører, og det at transportere dig lidt for langt i begge retninger er nok ikke så slemt i forhold til at starte og stoppe et helt tog med alle de andre passagerer på.

    @fanden @MThaastrup Ja, jeg har også forleden klaget over den gang vrøvl jeg fik smidt i hovedet da jeg prøvede at finde ud af hvordan jeg nulstillede min robotplæneklipper. Min pointe er mere, at det ikke nødvendigvis er en der sidder og tramper igennem en masse forskellige prompte for at få et sjovt resultat, men måske bare er en der har fået et idiotisk overblik på en reel søgning.

    Men hvor ville det da være godt, hvis man bare kunne slå det helt fra og så ikke være med til at bidrage til verdens undergang - lige på dette punkt i hvert fald.

    @fanden Nothing voice activated, but we have about 13 lights in the living room and having them connected to home assistant makes them much more manageable. We also use it for other things like night lights and signalling (for instance, the alarm is on, so one lamp is red).

    And then I have some integrations in place to "fix" the surround receiver / TV integration, so it turns on on the right source and turns off with the TV - stuff like that, which should work over HDMI, but is just broken.

    But again, this is home assistant. It's on the internal network which is not listening on the internet at all. And while they insist on adding AI capabilities, they have no business on my network.

    For mig er det mest et spørgsmål om at folk ikke vælger det fra igen. Der er ting der ikke virker i Firefox. Om det er fordi Chromium laver en IE eller fordi den bare ikke opfører sig ordentligt ved jeg ikke, men f.eks. skal jeg mange gange bruge Chrome for at logge ind på MitId på mobilen (Specifikt kan jeg ikke logge ind på eboks med mitid). Jeg har fået min kone over på Firefox, men hun skifter ofte tilbage til Chrome for at gøre specifikke ting som bare ikke virker på Firefox. Det er nok til at få folk til at skifte til noget der bare altid virker i stedet.

    Autofill, som må siges at være en relativt lille feature, er endnu en ting der er mangelfuld i Firefox i forhold til Chrome.

    Men nej, de vælger AI i stedet - noget som mange aktivt fravælger.

    bdonvr aksdb One zigbee device replaced by a thread device means that one node is removed from the zigbee network, making it smaller. Since it's a mesh network it will become less robust as a result. Likewise, the initial thread network will be very sparsely populated until a sufficient amount of devices has been added to it.
