Bitcoin is pure, pure evil

Bitcoin’s energy use per dollar generated now exceeds that of mining copper or gold

Bitcoin mining significantly increases PM2.5 pollution, the tiny airborne particles linked to respiratory and heart disease.

Each bitcoin mining rig has a short shelf life of about 1.3 years. Once outdated, they’re dumped

Bitcoin mining needs massive water cooling systems

@gerrymcgovern The wastefulness of the Bitcoin network is a big problem, but "pure evil" is a bit much. The central premise for Bitcoin is a decentralized record keeping system that is not under the control of any one person, government, corporation, group, or entity. With the rise of fascism and omnipresent corporations, isn't that a worthwhile goal, even if the implementation is terrible?
Speaking of implementation, the other major blockchains (Etherium, Solana) don't use "mining" so they don't have a disproportionate need energy or computing power to operate.

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@stephengentle @chikl @gerrymcgovern But what if the two parties cannot be trusted (e.g. banks)? That's the point of crypto.

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@gerrymcgovern Suppose that I agree with you. Still, isn't a decentralized ledger system a worthy goal, if only to provide an alternative to traditional financial systems?

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@benroyce @stephengentle @chikl @gerrymcgovern Wat? Are those the only two possible financial transactions.
If I were to hire a hitman, I would be paying with cash, not leaving a permanent, publicly available record on the blockchain.

I truly wonder..

will and his goons ever gonna be held accountable for all the corruption happening right now?

Billions of crypto investments, sneaky private deals, personal enrichment, etc etc

And when asked about it they simply say: "I don't know" and everyone just moves on

What is the point of a president if there is no check on it? Or at least actively enforced instead of bought over

I am so very against every form of president, king or whatever "alone ruler", when will we learn

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@stux Sadly, they might very well escape justice. They have so far, even though they've been blatantly breaking the law in broad daylight for years. Trump should have been in jail on January 6th 2021, at the latest; but the Democrats are too weak and complicit.

@AnarchoNinaWrites@jorts.horse avatar AnarchoNinaWrites , to random

Like, I'm boggled right? Do liberal zionists in the Dem Party expect anything to be different in 2026 or 2028?

I don't think you folks are getting it; you lost because you picked a genocide over beating Trump. The fact that you ran as Bush-era Republicans really did not help, but they've surveyed the people who stayed home and biggest cohort of them said "genocide in Gaza" when asked why.

There is no more argument. You're not gonna win this. If you cling to the genocide, you will lose again.

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@AnarchoNinaWrites The Democrats are the party of "Trump is worse"; which might be true at first glance, except they're the idiots that lost to the dumbest, most vulgar, petty, and cruel crook on the planet TWICE! But the Democrats cannot fail, they can only be failed, and those stubborn independents failed to rally behind them again.
"tRuMp iS wOrSe" so don't criticize or ask for anything, just shut up and vote really hard this time.
The worst part is that there's no sign that they've learned a damn thing from the past 30 years or more of getting their asses handed to them by the Republicans.
The Republicans wouldn't have gotten away with all the shit they've been pulling if it wasn't for Democrat weakness, which is indistinguishable from complicity.

@dangillmor@mastodon.social avatar dangillmor , to random

Trump regime's sabotage of the American (and global) economy is moving faster than even they probably expected.

The question is WHY they are deliberately wrecking the economy.

I have a theory: The billionaires will see a drop in paper wealth, but they're looking forward to buying everyone else's assets for pennies on the dollar when we reach the bottom, which could be very low indeed.

You think wealth concentration is bad now? (It is.) Just wait.

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@dangillmor Possibly. Another possibility is that Trump and his buddies plan on making money short selling all the way down.
Yet another possibility is that they really are this stupid and incompetent.
Either way, the rich will be okay, or come out better; while regular folks will suffer.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar aral , to random

I don’t know who needs to hear this but if every four years you must vote to keep out fascism, you’re not living in a democracy, you’re living under siege.

Tolerance cannot tolerate intolerance. Either democracies have constitutional protections (and a system of democratic institutions to enforce them) to ensure fascism can never be voted into power or they are just fascisms in waiting.

DanDan420 ,
@DanDan420@c.im avatar

@aral The American electoral system itself is nothing but a smokescreen even on the best of days.
On one hand, the Republicans have been systematically chipping away at voting rights at all levels for decades: closing polling stations, making it harder for students to vote, shortening early voting, voter ID laws, and so on.
On the other hand, the Democrats have done no pushback against the Republicans, but worked hard to block any movement from the left. They brag about what a lesser evil they are, and expect voters to lower expectations again and rally behind them, while they shift right every chance they get.

The Democratic leadership has convinced itself that each yes vote on a Republican nomination somehow banks political capital for the future. What future? When your opponent announces their intention to end democracy as we know it, what exactly are you saving your political capital for?

DanDan420 ,

@Daojoan The Democrats and Republicans are the same party. There's no other explanation for our current situation. When the Democrats are in charge (e.g. for eight years unde Obama) the Republicans stand together in opposition and block everything. When the Republicans are in charge, half the Democrats rush to meet them half way and help them pass bills in the name of holy bipartisanship.

    @JessTheUnstill No, the two parties are not the same: one is far right fascists that shamelessly push their agenda by any means at their disposal, while the other one lets them and and shimmies right any chance they get. Trump would have been a non-issue if it wasn't for the complicit incompetence of the Democrats who lost to the dumbest crook on the planet TWICE!

    The last election was a sham. Nevermind that the attack ads just write themselves, with Trump up to his eyeballs in scandals and legal issues, any one of which would be the end of the career of any other politician (but the Democrats were talking about economic policy); Trump should have been in jail awaiting trial, not out on the campaign trail. But that would require the Dems to have a backbone.

    The Democrats are no opposition party, they literally gave the fascist weapons in friggin' space even as they were half-heartedly trying to impeach him. I voted for Harris, and I want my vote back. One way or another, this is the last vote they get out of me.

    DanDan420 ,
    @DanDan420@c.im avatar

    @JessTheUnstill And you'll have the Democrats to thank for that. Aligning with the "lesser evil" does actually lead to less evil, but more evil; e.g. you trivializing genocide.
    At least I'll still have morals in the camps, another trivial thing...
